My overall feeling is of sadness, how someone who was a legend, a hero of the club and supporters should end up destroying so much of what he built up. If you contrast him with Martin Simons, who joined the same day, the difference is stark

We look at our beautiful Valley and to Richard Murray, Martin Simmons, Roger Alwyn amongst others and should be truly grateful. The fact that past 2 years you ( Richard Murray) have taken your seat in the directors box, when after 6 months you should have been sitting in The Covered End surrounding yourself with Charlton fans. You always stated you were firstly a Charlton supporter who was fortunate enough to be able to financially invest in the club you loved, what changed? You should and possible did, see all this coming before the likes of us but condone what's going on by taking your seat where you do.

Astute enough to appreciate and support the qualities of Alan Curbishley and also to realise that he was rebuilding a whole club rather than just a team hence appointing a similarly talented individual in Peter Varney when able.
Once the crutches that were Curbishley and Varney departed he floundered like a fish out of water. Some of that was because of his own hubris (Dowie) but theoretically decent appointments let him down too (Pardew).
Overall still in credit but his legacy has been badly tarnished by this Belgian episode for want of better description of the current regime.

Life is a journey, and 25 years is a massive chunk of life. People are complex and events can change them. I think Richard may well be like the rest of us, a decent bloke who has weaknesses, and wrestles with his own demons.
In terms of Charlton he oversaw a lot of good times and I am glad of that. Sadly he has been involved closely in the recent bad times, and his power and influence has diminished.

We spoke in the past on here about having a 'new broom' to sweep away the dead wood and cobwebs that had accumulated at the club. Unfortunately we have been stuck with the same Janitor in Richard Murray the whole time.
It is such a shame because without him we probably wouldn't have experienced those years in the Premier League, and the Valley would not look as it does now. So for me it's a thanks for the memories but you have now overstayed your welcome.

Played a major role in turning Charlton from a club with over 20,000 season ticket holders to a club with less than 5,000 season ticket holders.
He came, he saw, he conquered, he hugely outstayed his welcome and undid everything he'd ever achieved.
A classic case of an egotist needing suitable people around him to keep in check. Once left to his own devices in 2006, that was the end.
Where we are now is almost completely down to him.
