Davis cup semi is only 5 days after the US Open final though. So if Murray makes the final on the Sunday, then allowing himself a couple of days to rest/recover and a day to travel back from New York, he'd be arriving in Scotland with only a couple of days to prepare. Hardly ideal.

Olympics and Davis Cup are run by the same tennis organisation. Judy Murray, among others, has suggested that the Davis Cup should take a break in Olympic years.

It doesn't look good, though the official reason also included “Dan had a few personal things at home just before coming here. That made me decide that he wasn’t in the right head space to travel with the team and that we would bring Wardy instead” which was more mysterious
Del Potro will be a major threat to the Grand Slams next season. Good to have him back (even if I wanted Andy to win today!)
Stan's win at the US and Del Po's re-emergence are definitely good for the game. In addition to just breaking up the Novak/Murray monopoly a bit it's also good to have a couple of slightly different types of player at the top as Murray and Novak are very similar in their style and relative strengths and weaknesses.
Pity Murray lost today and being put through that 5 set marathon for nothing not good for the rest of the weekend. I don't know if they get a choice but I'd have been tempted to play him against Del Po on Sunday in the hope we are at least at 1-1 going into the doubles tomorrow. If it's 2-0 Argies we get no choice but to play Murray in both remaining games and you can see he's starting to suffer the fatigue of a long, intense season.
