Outrageous behaviour from our stewards today.

That's a club decision if they wish to ban a fan.
The stewards can ban him but they can take the ticket.
Either way, I personally hate it when I get some jobsworth trying to go through my stuff because he thinks he's really a police officer. Happened in a local supermarket a few years ago when someone asked to go through my shopping, a quick "No thanks, I'm alright cheers." seemed to throw him off until it was too late and I'd already walked out.
Even the press are being hassled, as I say, it sounds like they're shitting it at the moment.Redmidland said:Richard Cawley tweeted he was being pushed by stewards as he was trying to film last night around 5 pm, I posted his tweet on the match thread, Page 18.
One would also expect it's quite an easy win for the police if they stepped in; everything is on CCTV and there's numerous witnesses - including other officers who intervened. It's been reported, so it's best to get it dealt with to tick off and get a cheap target covered.mrbligh said:Private prosecution is pointless. Let's face it, the Police have no time for jumped-up wannabe tough guy Stewards. It's policing on the cheap and one step down from Bouncers and Screws. Ironic then when some of our fans are made to feel like criminals for crimes like unfolding a harmless banner.3

when everyone had a quick frisk, from bog standard security guys or even to the BBC or Wimbledon or the Airport when after i, like others set the alarm off after walking through the Detector frame was frisked with the small metal detector.
(i must of swallowed some money from a home made christmas pud which then took a wrong turning and then got wedged inside !))
Bizarrely at Wimbledon the guy was more hands on and was near the mark as he didn't have the small hand held detector.
If it got to be a more invasive search, like being told to drop your strides,
bend over, and think of England, then make sure it's the old bill or a custom officer or else ! plus only in a darken room unless you want to go viral on social media. (or there pills you can take )
Yep I was given quite a search at Palarse, so I guess even inoffensive looking middleaged females are targetted. They found my house keys in my pocket and angrily asked 'what are THESE?!' I replied 'keys' and they looked baffled and let me in.12 -
There's no way they're gonna search my pencil case, my sharpener is my business9

They all have the relevant certification, training and it is renewed and recorded each year.Henry Irving said:
From my experience as part of the Safety Advisory Group at the Valley (albeit some years ago) they have to have the required training as part of the club's license to host matches. Since it is the same very competent people running that part of the operation then as now I doubt that has changed.micks1950 said:
I agree they certainly should be qualified and be employed people who should know what they are doing and what the legal requirements are – but are we certain that's the case?Henry Irving said:
All the stewards will be qualified. They aren't employed by the catering firm but by people who know what they are doing and what the legal requirements are.HantsAddick said:Well, they employ bar staff who have no idea what they are doing, presumably because they're cheap, so guess they do the same with stewards? Should be investigated!
I've no direct knowledge but a poster earlier seemed to know that what's been referred to as the 'snatch squad' are provided by an agency run by a firefighter called John and that most of them are firefighters or prison officers.
As well as the suggested assault in removing the banner I'm concerned about the suggestion that these stewards confiscated season tickets. Does this mean that they searched people or that they asked them to hand over their season tickets and the individuals complied?
Personally I wouldn't give my name or hand over anything demanded by these people. If they wanted to do more than politely escort me off the premises I'd want them to go and get a police officer – particularly if what they were complaining of was just displaying a banner or dropping leaflets.
By the way, there was representation at the post match demo from the football grounds safety authority yesterday.

You dont have to consent, no one has the right to physically restrain and search you other than ob,
If I wanted to gain entry somewhere and the conditions on entry were that I had to accept a frisk search then thats one thing,
The suggestion was that the stewards could once coming down to ask you to move on can touch you or search you and that is not the case1 -
Come on if we can get a useless manager the sack, surely we can get a two bob steward the sack, maybe not only from his Charlton job but his other bullying work as well.1

Thanks Gwen for such a clear well-stated account of your awful experiences yesterday. I can only offer sympathy and support but as others have said sure there are some who can and will give you expert advice and assistance in getting justice.Gwen said:Hi, I am the mum in question and Josh my son is 25. I also take a young lad who is in residential care to the games who was sitting right next to my son. The first steward grabbed the banner - did not ask for it, and when my son reacted that he was a jobsworth he went off and then came the reinforcements. at the time it seemed like there were loads, they grabbed my son by the neck and tried to haul him out over me and consequently one of the stewards hit me in the face. They were trying to get my son done on an assault charge as one of the stewards claimed that he had assaulted him but the resulting cctv showed that my son had done no wrong, no lifting of hands to ward them off etc and the police said that as he had clearly done nothing wrong why couldnt he be let back in - stewards said no! they said it was because it had been covering advertising but if you look at the photos it barely covers the A of Andrews. but that was not the real reason it was because a certain person had told the club security that if any banners were shown that the owners had to be ejected. I wasnt ejected due to the fact that I had to go back to the young lad I was looking after - the police intervened in that. I will definitely be taking this further no doubt about that - they dont know me once I am riled, as i will not leave it be. At no time until we were in the foyer did they say it was about covering advertising

I would suggest that from their behaviour yesterday either the club has been had or they didn't attend the training sessions.
More seriously for the club their actions have made matters worse since the response on here will be for a lot of people to challenge the stupid decision to take on a supporter and his mother by bringing more banners next home game. Obviously Ivana hasn't learned that you don't put petrol on a fire.

IMHO the `Banner` and subsequent publicity both for itself,( and also Andrew`s heating!) has already achieved some of its objectives.
WELL DONE that lad.7 -
This is really quite unbelievable - the bully boy tactics will not work in the long run rest assured . A Mother with her son and a lad in care == honestly words fail me but what it has done is galvanise the fanbase even more. yippee i aye +++0

Next home game we all dress as Morris Dancers. Imagine the headlines. STEWARDS BEAT UP MORRIS DANCERS2

He just grabbed the flag and when we said why he said he had a right to take it and when Josh called him a jobsworth he said we were to go with him and we said no, we were not going anywhere and he just went and then he came back with the other stewards. At no time did he give a relevant reason. If he had said it was covering advertising which it clearly wasn't we would have just held it up, I am definitely not a violent person and if someone asks politely with a reason we would have complied - but he was aggressive from the startguinnessaddick said:@Gwen what was said of the first steward who grabbed your son, before the group came down?

Gwen if your son wants to talk to me about what happened I could advise him on his legal options. Send me a message if he does and I'll give you my phone number and he can call me and we can properly talk through it. Another option would be to meet at the bristol city game and have a chat, common assault has a six month time limit14

A summary of the incident should be sent to all the media outlets that have been reporting on whats going on at Charlton.4

Also gwen you were assaulted and can take this up with the police. In assaulting you were the grab squad reckless? I'd say so3

Every cause needs a martyr!!
I am willing to take one for the team. I am a small guy, look about 15 (although I am actually 20). I am willing to hold a nice big banner and if they approach me will stand between them and it, in an unprovocative way hands behind my back but unmoving. Then at the first sign of contact I am falling down the stairs/ over the seats. Serious injuries may follow!25 -

I am looking forward to seeing the Valley filled with banners. Ban a banner day, that'll keep 'em busy and they will be forced to either up the punishment regime or ignore it altogether. Either way you will have succeeded.5

There must be somebody on this board who knows a steward. If we could get an anonymous quote on what they've been told to do (e.g., to aggressively remove any and all banners critical of the board and eject from the stadium), the media would eat it up.3
