Still my favourite ever away day. £2 each to the driver (Mr T) to divert via Blackpol, best 2 quid I've ever spent!
  • If I remember right, this was the one where there were engineering works on the mainline into Carlisle. We had to go to somewhere and pick up some little chuff chuff train that went about 30 miles an hour across the Lake District. When we passed level crossing there were groups of hikers waving, exspecting the train to be full of characters from the railway children. Instead, there were 3 carriages full of us hanging out the windows largely the worse for wear ! Shouting and hollering. Happy memory .

Yep...the trains were diverted on the Settle to Carlisle line (I think..)

Got to Carlisle at about 1.30pm and rushed a couple of beers down before the game. The game felt like a bit of an anti-climax in some ways even though we did come back from 0-2 down. Then we had an excruciating train journey which only reached Preston at about 9pm. Went to a couple of pubs there, followed by a club and a 3am curry. Got the first train home to play football in the morning and cricket in the afternoon!
  • Yep I'm in that pic somewhere!
  • Have a story to tell of that day (weekend) and just maybe brave enough one day to write about it.Needless to say if the truth ever comes out a price could be put on my head.

Think it was the Cumbrian coast line, which is way slower ...

I too was on the coach and won't forget the night and that nightclub where the queue was swept aside to allow the unruly mob to stroll in and take prime position at the bar!
  • Got train home, stopped in Preston (I think) for an age.
Managed to get out the station, Kentucky and back on before it pulled away.
Late back to Euston, blagged a black cab home off British Rail (curtesy of the King of blagging WP)
  • We stopped in a boozer in the Cumbrian countryside and then got a police escort to the ground. It was about half one. The police wanted us Herbert's in the ground but we decided to have a game of football with the locals on the pitches beside the ground. They soon left us alone allowing us to have a stroll into town. Big mistake.
There were were charlton everywhere. The long walk back to the ground I recall being a bit lively. Is there any coverage of the game anywhere ?
  • As above blackpool what a night.picked up the old yorkshire gray.bazer here.b mob.
