Didn't Katrien say last season the goal was survival ?
Perhaps something is being lost in translation here, survival is the first goal (it has to be) but maybe it's not the only one.
I also wonder if the person that Jackson was referring to as "the owner" was RD or, more likely in my opinion, KM who he may see as the owners representative.
No, she said that the goal is promotion but they will not set themselves up my making declarations as to timescales.
There is no doubt that the aim is Premier League but via an affordable and sustainable plan/model.
Survival is the bare minimum but, in truth, there are only three outcomes, we go up, we go down or we do neither. Staying up is non negotiatble, we mustn't go down. No amount of investment guarantees promotion, but overspending does, virtually, guarantee longer term problems. I would rather stay in this division than risk it all and end up falling out of it into the third division, again.
i doubt promotion is that serious an ambition for these reasons
the quote that its important teams are on different levels in the network
the large amount of cash RD has that he isn't investing, i.e. the limits on the investment, Gudmundsson was a free, Watt was a second chance saloon, Polish Pete became one, Vetokele is the only major investment, and the outset at least seemed very good value
the level of investment going into the championship, which realistically makes even playoffs highly unlikely with the approach taken, and squad size, and the limited number of tried and tested players we are bringing in just isn't consistent with achieving that

Have said for a long time that we'll see a relegation with this board. I hope I'm wrong.
comment from JJ sounds quite plausible, but not necessarily in the way it was implied here.
I doubt that it was "we are expecting to be in a relegation battle all year", rather "our first ambition is to avoid relegation, then we will see". The later is something all clubs and players would say. It is certainly how I see each season. Let's get to safety first, then think about other things later.

Except he's not talking to the media and so making a bland statement for public consumption.
This was, according to the poster, said to a mate on a training course.

Same thing applies. If a mate said to me, how will Charlton do this season, my first reaction would be to say "first thing, make sure we survive." It wouldn't mean that I necessarily think that we will struggle, just that it is the first target for most clubs.
It is a long haul to get to safety and, come Christmas, there will be 10-15 clubs all looking at the possibility of relegation. I expect us to be in that group, but I don't think we are nailed on for a relegation fight, which seemed the implication of initial comments. I can't imagine the RD wants us relegated. I am not in Colin's RD cheerleading, everything is perfect and rosy camp, but I do think he has got better, from an initial very poor first attempt, to making a reasonable fist of buying players by the end of last season. Hopefully that will continue.
JJ has been around the block enough to know that every year includes the struggle to make sure you are not relegated and it is in that context I read what he said. Of course, he might have been told that we are not buying any new players, just selling the ones we have. In which case, we will be relegated.
