A man gets a train from Euston. He has seven chocolate bars with him. His journey takes 1hour and 12minutes. When he arrives at his destination he still has seven chocolate bars. Where does he get off?

    Is it York (ie) ?
    Not York ...

The clue is a town in Warwickshire
  • Nuneaton as above.
  • In the English language we add an 's' to the end of words to make them plural.
    Cake-cakes
    Bed-beds
    Cow-cows
    Etc

What is the one word though that is already plural, and by adding an 's' to the end makes it singular?

  • I haven't worked this out yet, from yesterdays Guardian:

There are five houses with the outside walls painted in five different ways. David, Ed, Nick, Nicola and Nigel each live in one of the houses. They each drink a certain type of coffee, have a preferred mode of transport and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, the same preferred mode of transport or drink the same type of coffee.

Nicola lives in the tartan house.
    Ed has a guinea pig
    David drinks mochaccino
The paisley house is on the left of the gingham house
The owner of the paisley house drinks flat whites.
The person who drives by car has a squirrel.
The owner of the striped house travels by bike.
The person living in the centre house drinks double espresso.
Nick lives in the first house.
The person who travels by train lives next to the one who has a pitbull.
The person who has a badger lives next to the person who travels by bike.
The person who travels by plane drinks chai latte.
    Nigel goes everywhere by foot.
Nick lives next to the polka dot house.
The person who travels by train has a neighbour who drinks decaf.

    WHO OWNS THE FISH?

For the sake of clarity: the houses are adjacent to each other in a line and the directions are from the perspective of someone looking at the houses. And any resemblance of David, Ed, Nick, Nicola and Nigel to the party leaders is purely coincidental. You have to solve this problem by logic, not by having had a coffee with any of them.

First time I've ever seen a puzzle like this. Do you have any more?

It's quite straightforward once you know how to start it!
  • pas, mas, bras, millionaires, billionaires
  • At the recent inter-departmental jam making contest, four lucky candidates took part to make the juiciest strawberry jam.

The ages of the contestants were 14, 17, 20 and 22.

As it happens the person who came last was the oldest, whereas Stuart was three years older than the person who came second.

James was neither the oldest nor the youngest and Kev finished ahead of the 17 year old, but didn't win.

John was also unlucky this time and didn't win either.

Can you determine who finished where and how old they are?

Why is pas the plural of pass (etc) ?

    Princes (above) is certainly correct

  • During a recent music festival, four DJs entered the mixing contest.

Each wore a number, either 1, 2, 3 or 4 and their decks were different colours.

DJ Skinf Lint came first, and only one DJ wore the same number as the position he finished in.
DJ Slam Dunk wore number 1.
The DJ who wore number 2 had a red deck and DJ Jam Jar didn't have a yellow deck.
The DJ who came last had a blue deck.
DJ Park'n Ride beat DJ Slam Dunk.
The DJ who wore number 1 had a green deck and the DJ who came second wore number 3.

Can you determine who came where, which number they wore and the colour of their deck?
  • 1st - Skinf Lint - Red - 2
    2nd - Park'n Ride - Yellow - 3
    3rd - Slam Dunk - Green - 1
    4th - Jam Jar - Blue - 4

    Correct
  • You are given two ropes and a lighter. Each of the two ropes has the following property: if you light one end of the rope, it will take exactly one hour to burn to the other end. It doesn’t necessarily burn at a uniform rate. How can you measure a period of 45 minutes?
  • Light both ends of one rope so that should take 30 mins to burn as burning at twice the rate. . If you lit the other rope at same time you know there is 30 mins worth of rope left. Therefore if you light other end of that rope it should take 15 mins.

Keep these coming am enjoying these.

    Ok a much harder one
  • You have 100 bags of coins each with 100 coins, but only one of these bags has gold coins. The gold coin weighs 1.01 ounce and the other coins weighs 1 ounce. You also have a scale, but can only use it once. How can you identify the bag of gold coins?

Put all the bags on the scale at once, then remove them one by one until the weight decreases by 1.01 rather 1?

  • Open each bag and have a look? Or, as money bags are normally see-through, use your eyes? Unless we assume you're not allowed to do that or the regular coins are also gold in colour.

All coins are same in appearance but not purity. The scales can only be used once, you can open the bags (even remove coins) the scale won't hold more than 6000 grams.

Can't you remove all coins except one from each bag, then do as Largo says...Put all bags on, remove one at a time and see when the weight drops by 1.01?

    there's an easier way

  • Put one coin from each bag on the scales, one at a time, until the weight increases by 1.01 ounces?
  • Take one coin from each bag and weigh them at the same time, then take one coin off, if it drops by 1.01 that's the gold, if it doesn't then the other bag is, surely?

Is every coin in the bag gold btw

Scan with a metal detector to get the variable reading.
  • I've got it. You take 6 bags of coins to a shop and use them to buy better quality scales. Whilst 6 bags of coins is quite a lot to shell out in one go, you recognise that having good quality scales will save you a great deal of time and aggravation in the future.
