  • I thought this quote would be coming at some point. And that it would be from either Harriott, Solly, Jacko or Wiggins.
  • I've kept the faith longer than any of the team have lived but now I find my faith being tested some what.

  • Newsshopper the mouthpiece of the network? Why not headline with fans real concerns
  • Headline is based on what Callum Harriott said.

Precisely. The real story is the fans reactions to the network not glib comments about sticking in there cos results will come!
  • Clearly, he takes his PR role seriously..........

You seem to be confusing journalism with NS reporting.

I believe 'newshopper' is also involved with Charlton Live the online player radio show for Sunday evenings. The show invites emails and tweets continually, but does not read out any negative ones, however mildly they are couched. It may be an act of editorial control, which is laughable, it may be a group fearful of effecting their relationship with the parent club.
I don't think newshopper, and now those involved with Charlton Live are in any way at ease with engaging with fans unless those fans share their world view.

Invite Mike Flanagan on there. He's not scared to say how it is on local radio or Charlton related programmes.

  • The Newshopper account on here is run by Paul Green, who is employed by News Shopper as the sports editor.

The story above is a standard player reaction piece from a game - you type up what the player says. He asked fans to stick with the team so that's what Paul will have written.

The 'link' between News Shopper and Charlton Live you refer to can only be me (Louis Mendez) - I'm the only person who goes on Charlton Live who also writes for News Shopper.

I write for shopper, on a volunteer basis, for our away games where I do the manager and player reactions for Paul. I'm also currently writing the match reports for the South London Press whilst Kevin Nolan is recovering from his illness.

I also write a blog weeklyish for The News Shopper which I always post a link to on here.

By blog is often scathing of the club when it needs to be. To imply that News Shopper in anyway doesn't let me post scathing comments about the club is nonsense.

Also to imply that we on Charlton live do not read out negative tweets is also 100% false. Download the latest podcast and listen to me reading out tweets that ask for Luzon to be replaced, imply that Roger Johnson isn't a great signing and moan about everything else under the sun.

Read The newsshopper tweets from the game last night that mention the booing and unrest.

What you've said and implied there Seth is just plain wrong.

    Ignore them Louis

Roland's well on top of that one going by what we've seen recently
  • Just to add to what Louis says there (all of it correct), a reporter's job is to report what goes on.

We've already made reference in both online stories from last night's game to the atmosphere and I'll be at the meeting in Woolwich next week to report on that. Report - just like how the above report is based on what Callum Harriott said after the game last night.

Some people don't like the News Shopper. Fine, no problem. Opinions and all that.

The paper is, however, 100% independent of Charlton Athletic and the Charlton Live radio show but of course happy to work on a friendly basis with both of them, as any local paper would. Forget all about Belgian conspiracy theories though.

    Ok here we go.

I sent the following email to Charlton Live last Sunday timed at 19.23:

    'Good evening everybody.

Radio Tees were commentating on the game yesterday, and they frequently cut to a reporter on the touchline. After the Bamford goal the reporter described Guy Luzon turning animatedly to Damian Matthew and asked who was supposed to be marking Bamford, Matthew apparently indicated somebody.
I would have thought Luzon ought not to have to ask, being the head coach and all, and anyway either he hadn’t prepared things properly during the week, or the players didn’t follow instructions...or Mr Luzon selected the wrong players, or the players available aren’t good enough. All of this meant we lost anyway. We were told Guy Luzon was appointed because of poor results under Bob Peeters, well what has changed beyond a predictable 442 and lots of long balls from the keeper?
Is there any point going down the Valley on Tuesday when the experience is so continually miserable, and we have to watch a side where they, and the leadership, don’t seem that bothered anyway?
More and more of us are becoming bitterly disillusioned, and maybe the regime and the footballing side ought to ask why fans should turn up, and when they find a credible answer they should act on it.'

    It was ignored.

I followed it up with the following email timed at 19.51

'You have invited emails but have chosen not to mention the one I sent earlier, despite reading out the one I sent last week. I am writing this now because you guys have said ‘lets leave yesterday’s game behind us’. I can only presume you think my email is either too negative, or it is rude or offensive in some way. It might be worth saying, when inviting emails, what kind of tone you want the emails to have in order for you to broadcast them, that would be most helpful.'.

    It was ignored.

I am not implying anything, I am stating facts.
Don't worry, stay calm, I understand you don't want to risk losing access I really do, all I ask is that you're honest about it, your apparent equivocation does you no favours.

    OK?

    What you actually meant was

"They didnt read MY emails out"

Listen to the podcast if you like and then tell me if my email copied above was inappropriate for the show lined up alongside the content that was there. You will find that some of the same listeners varied responses were read out at intervals, so it doesn't seem to be a case of overcrowding. Please, listen to it and give me an honest response when you have.

Do you expect them to read out every single email they receive? How do you know how many they get?
  • I heard Seth sent 4 emails, but claims 5 emails as the 5th email was sent from his computer but not his own email address.

Everybody else knows its only 4 emails, but Seth is adamant its 5.
  • edited February 2015
    I sent them to:

    studio@charltonlive.co.uk

The same address I sent this email to the previous Sunday, which was read out.

'I have comments about yesterday, and about Guy Luzon.

The players didn’t show any enthusiasm which a new manager is supposed to bring, the formation was poor, where we had an ineffective central midfield, and long balls up to Igor and Callum to compete with much taller defenders didn’t work. The substitution of Igor when we needed a goal was very hard to understand, and Luzons decision to sign LePoint and then bring him on is bewildering to put it mildly. I know Lepoint was involved in our goal, but his general play yesterday was laughable. I sincerely hope Lepoint isn’t as dreadful as he looked yesterday because he is on a long contract.
Nothing about the new players, and that includes Dimi and Velkovitch and Watt looks any better than what we already have, and if the suggestion is to give them time...well how much time because time is rapidly running out? As for Guy Luzon, I watched him, listened to his press conference, and observed his actions in the game and nothing whatsoever suggests to me he is better than Peeters, and I fear a whole lot worse.
It is utterly depressing watching what is happening, and I wonder if it’s worth bothering anymore because this new regime does not seem to care a jot about the fans.'

So there we have it, emails to the same address over two Sundays. One broadcast (remember we are urged to write in), and one not, check the podcasts if you like.
  • Seth,

I don't do the emails I do the tweets. I have just texted Terry who confirmed he doesn't ingore ANY emails and he doesn't recall the above two emails

Can you please confirm what address you sent them to?

He also mentioned we didn't get a great deal of emails on Sunday so unless there was an issue with our server I'd be surprised if it has arrived and we'd missed it.

I think you're slightly glorifying and also belittling what having "access" means to me. I only speak to players/ head coaches for interviews for the papers, I'm not interesting in chumming up to them. I'd like to get involved more involved with football writing and reporting having experienced it for the papers and BBC London and getting a taste for it. I've even covered a millwall game for the shopper, hardly doing that because I want "access" to that lot. I work hard on my time off from my day job to try and get a step on a ladder that is almost impossible to get onto so don't belittle that and tell me Im doing it because I want to keep my "access"

I apologise for my belittling and apparent sarcasm. However earlier you said I was 'implying' something when I was reporting on my experience, so we're both guilty of wrongly reading motives into each other.
