Dick Tydeman

Born: Chatham 26/5/1951
Debut: Millwall Away 27/12/76 1-1 Draw. Final match: Gillingham Home 2/5/81

Dick Tydeman joined from Gillingham for a club record fee of £65,000 two days after Derek Hales was sold to Derby County for £333,333 plus VAT (Also a record fee) by his old boss from his days at Priestfield, Andy Nelson. Within a month Tydeman caused some controversy by being selected to play in the FA Cup third round match against Blackburn Rovers and the replay. Tydeman was ineligible as he had already played for Gillingham in that seasons competition. Charlton lost the replay so no further action was taken.

A six foot plus midfielder went on to make 178 League and Cup appearances, scoring 7 goals over the next five seasons. He was part of the successful 1980/1981 promotion winning team from the Third Division with his only goal of that season shown on LWT's Big Match programme with a strike against Hull City in January 1981.

Tydeman was sold along with Colin Powell back to Gillingham for £42,000 and were Keith Peacock's first signings as manager of the Gills. In his latter days of his career he played for Peterborough, Chatham, Dagenham, Dover, Bromley and Canterbury.

As of July 2012 Dick was a taxi driver.

Any lifers with thoughts or stories on Dick during his time at the Valley?

  • One of my favourite players...thats all.
  • Remember him scoring a screamer in 80/81, possibly against Gillingham.
  • Good creative player probably held back from going further in the game by appearing very lightweight for a big man.

Was stick thin and a bit paceless too but was quality on the ball and saw a pass.

In fact, we could do with him now as I'm sure, even at 63, he could still find Igor ;-)

One of my childhood heroes .

I agree with Colin Cameron's assessment had we signed him earlier in his career he would have blossomed into an outstanding player .My memory is he was creative and had a wide range of passing.

    I remember when he signed for us Gillingham gave us some picture badges of him for sale in the club shop and I purchased one of them . I particularly loved a goal he scored against Chelsea to take the lead at the Bridge .He meant to cross it but somehow his miskick baffled Petar Borata. I think it was on the Big Match . Unfortunately they came back to beat us 3-1;

Probably his greatest achievement for us was as Mike Bailey's inspirational captain in the 1980/81 promotion team . I was disappointed when he went and Tydeman did say Mullery tried to keep him ,but I suspect the pull of his local team Gillingham especially when Keith Peacock took over was too much.
  • Remember a game against Mansfield I think, we were 2-0 down and Tydeman was getting some abuse. He then smashed one in from 25 yards and suddenly he was a great player!!

We equalised in that game and then Peacock missed a penalty to win it.

Also remember that one at Chelsea.
  • Often a thread whose title is a man's name on General Charlton means a player we're linked with...but somehow I knew this wouldn't be, despite never having heard of the guy
  • Glenn Roeder always reminded me of Dick. Great player.
  • couldnt run ,had no left foot, couldnt tackle ,for a tall bloke was poor in the air but he had a magic right leg .

he had a good understanding with keith Peacock (the general) for a few seasons ..when he played well the team played well !
  • Scored a great lob at Bristol Rovers in the 5.5 draw to put us 1.0 up. Remember the goal of the season against Hull and the goal from an acute angle at Chelsea.

  • Decent enough over quite a long CAFC career but as @LenGlover wrote, a bit 'lightweight' for a big man .. good passer, terrible tackler
  • I used to drink in a pub in twydall near Gillingham, Dick was often in there and was a genuine guy who got a lot of stick for leaving Gillingham for Charllton. Was someone wha wasnt up his arse like a lot of others were in them days.
  • Scored against Brighton. We then went 2-0 through McAuley I think.
Went 3-2 down and then won 4-3 with Paddy getting the winner.
For the life of me, cannot remember who got the third.
  • That was the game when Brighton had three goes at scoring from the spot.

I forgot that bit. You have an excellent memory!

  • Brighton game was unbeliveable i am sure ray mchale missed two penalties and peter ward eventually scored. The ref would be hung for that these days.

I think that one was at home to Hull City in a game we won 3-2.
  • I am too young to remember him play but as a teenager me and my pals used to always book him when he was a cabbie in Medway to take us to the various clubs in Gillingham, he was a top bloke, more than happy to tell you a few stories. Most of them involved Hales.
  • we use to call him "cold feet" ,
If you have ever played on a really cold surface, before you get warmed up the last thing you need is to kick a ball------DT unfortunately went into a tackle(very rare) like his feet were cold and painful. Could pass the ball well though.
  • One of my all time favourite player. I thought I was the only person on this site that recognised he was good. I was beginning to doubt as no one seemed to mention him other than me when going back in time. He came into my pub with Hales one Sunday evening but I was too shy to go over and have a chat.

Brian Horton their captain missed twice & Peter Ward scored the 3rd. I can still visualise it now !
  • I also seem to recall that he was bit of a Crouch - lanky but his ability to win the ball in the air wasn't in direct proportion to his height!
  • I really liked him...great passer of the ball. The Tydeman story I heard was that he played a reserve game for us at Brighton (probably around '81), and whoever was in the Brighton dug out he obviously didn't like, as all he did every time he got the ball was take aim and smash the ball at said dug out. At first, I think both sides thought this quite strange and funny (especially as he was quite accurate with said "shots"), but as the game went on it became monotonous and Dick was eventually subbed. Could have been Bailey in the dug out, or someone else?
  • not sure if this is a true story but I was told (by someone who was playing in the team at time) that he once asked to be taken off during a hail storm as it was hurting his head. Good story whether it's tre or not. Not one of my favourite players I have to say

Didn't Horton score the first penalty only for the ref to rule it out because of encroachment.

Jeff Wood saved the second one, the ref ruled that one out because he said he moved too early.

Then Ward stepped up and scored or something like that.
  • Something like that :-)

Correct. Beat Brighton 4-3 at The Valley on 4 October 1977 (Tydeman, Powell, Peacock, McAuley); attendance 19,098. I was at the old Layer Road ground in February 1981 when Tydeman was sent off in our 2-0 defeat against Colchester, the start of a dodgy run of only two wins in 12 games. But we still won promotion from the Third Division, beating Gillingham 2-1 on the final day.

In terms of enjoying a game for excitement and bearing in mind I was an excitable 15 year old. The 4-3 win over Brighton was possibly my favourite Valley game of all time.

Brighton were top or second and we were probably about 7th, with hopes of promotion. Killer & Flash were at their best (as well as Powell & Peacock). 19,000 crowd, when I'd been brought up on 5000 crowds.

Yes other games beat it, because of their importance, obviously the play off wins against Sunderland, Leeds and Chelsea, but they weren't at The Valley.
