Played in the same Eltham Town side with Rio in the early 90's. Even back then at 13 you knew he had the ability and character to make it as a professional footballer. A nice lad with really lovely parents. I have a lot of time for Rio and his family and proud that he went on to achieve so much in the game.

Can honestly say the same, I've been called a white bastard but I don't deem that to be racist, although I was slightly offended by being called a bastard when I'm in fact not.
In the past two seasons, Ive been called, a 'fckin Honky', White Cnut'
This is in Vets football.
Weve had a black ref and a white ref and neither were interested.
guarantee it would hve been a 22 man brawl If I had the nerve to say anything derogatory via Racism.
I could go on but know the thread would be closed.

yeah, but i bet you aren't looked at funny by shopkeepers regularly or even people walking down the street or even followed and searched by the police simply because of the colour of your skin. I don't think many people realise the institutional racism that still exists for minorities which is part of the reason they find it acceptable to call you a honkey/white cunt etc, that and they're complete prats themselves.

Where is this and what year mate? Seriously, sounds like the 1970s in bloody Norfolk or something.
Lets thank fck it is a minority that have an issue with other peoples skin colour. A vey small minority now.
I'd like to know how he knows the police stop and search due to the colour of the skin??? Did they say it???
Whilst not being able to comment on this persons circumstances; the Police have admitted that 30% of stop and search procedures in relation to people of black origin they have not had a valid reason for the stop. That is to say no crime has been commited in the area and they have stopped the black person for no reason other then a whim. I believe this is compared to less then 5 % in relation to people of a white minority.

I can't believe anyone has ever used the word honky...
I got called that endlessly when I accidentally took a "shortcut" through Tenderloin in SF...
Given the amount of racism they'd all no doubt encountered in their lives I managed to shake it off though.
Yeah make excuses for them. Only works one way after all.
I'm not making excuses for "them". I'm trying to understand the lifelong circumstances that have led "them" to behave in that way rather than just assume it's the same as a privileged white person using the equivalent racial language. Growing up in poverty and extreme deprivation in the US in the 60s and 70s and being black will have understandably shaped their world view.
(Obviously the use of the word doesn't do anything to help the cause of racial equality and stamping out racism and they shouldn't use it... )
Anyway - my point was, honky is a term that's used, whatever the rights and wrongs of who uses it and why.

it's so easy for a white man to poke fun at this. I guess the fact the riots a few years ago, made up of a majority of black youths was simply a coincidence and not race related at all? Think.

don't think it's making excuses, all racism are perpetuated by idiots. But particularly in the USA racism is still pretty atrocious on both sides. But acting like it's only the white man who gets racist abuse is just as idiotic. If you've ever been to a "ghetto" area of the states you'll realise how crazy it is, it's a poor area where EVERYONE is black. Like it's quite crazy how it seems they've put all the black people in one area just to get them out of the way it seems.

but that's more of a class issue, rather than that of race. i.e "he's working class, he can't possibly be any good at this job/be lazy" rather than "he's black, he'll make our older client uncomfortable/might commit a crime or something"
obviously i'm talking about extremes here, but these employers exist, even if it's a subconscious thought that they push out of their mind, it's still there.
Goonerhater must have some kind of alarm that tells him when someone on CL talking about race , immigration or politics because like clockwork we get his aggressive blinkered comments every time . I'm with Henry on this .
As someone who has been going to Charlton for 30+ years I have seen racism first hand by our own fans. Quite a bit when we were at Selhurst but little since. The last i heard at any ground was from some girl about 10 years ago who was some skanky old bag who just about managed to get the words in a coherent order.
I dont doubt that there are instances of racism still at Charlton and that must be stamped out. I just NEVER hear it and the way that Ferdinand and others bang on about it being a cancer sweeping the game just doesnt add up for me. All this garbage about black managers too. The fact Paul Ince cant hold down a job is that he is a poor manager and nothing to do with his skin colour. Even SCP is a limited manager tactically and its ultimately the results that cost him his job.
Re-the black manager issue, you are somewhat missing the point. Why are so few black managers appointed in the first place? Is it really because black players can't move on to coaching in the same way white players do?

great argument, i'm convinced. WHY DO WE HATE WHITES IN THIS COUNTRY
If Rio Ferdinand is so upset about rude, offensive and abusive behaviour then he should have criticised Anton Ferdinabd when he verbally abused John Terry on the pitch.
Instead Rio supported Anton and was quite offensive to Ashley Cole. I suggest Rio looks a little closer to home if he wants to stop such disrespectful behaviour.
Rewriting history. Ignoring the facts. Trying to hide something?
The facts are very simple and were made public at a rather costly trial. Anton Ferndinand made an offensive comment about an untrue media story to John Terry.
John Terry misheard and thought he was accused if racism and repeated the comment as he heard it.
Ashley Cole was standing next to John Terry and didn't hear anything.
Neither player reported anything to the match officials.
The only person being intentionally offensive was Anton Ferdinand who remains unapologetic.
I'm sorry if the facts of this incident don't fit in with swords alives agenda.

Re-the black manager issue, you are somewhat missing the point. Why are so few black managers appointed in the first place? Is it really because black players can't move on to coaching in the same way white players do?
No my comment is that every time a black manager gets sacked there is always an undercurrent in the media that it was because of his colour and not his ability.
I dont know why there arent more black managers or coaches out there. If there are so few is that because they are really being denied the opportunity or that they arent seeking it in the first place. If someone could tell me that by ratio of their ethnicity there are more black managers out of work than white ones then yes, there is an underlying problem. What I do not agree with is giving someone a job because of the colour of their skin. As far as I am concerned you give the job to the person who is the very best candidate. This is what I have done for all the people that have worked for me and their skin colour doesnt ever come into it. Thinking that I had got the job because it meant my employer could tick a box saying "25% of workforce black" target met (a la Rooney rule) would frankly be insulting

I think proportionaly there are less black players taking their coaching badges hence less black managers moving into management. I remember reading years ago someone suggesting Wolves were racist in not employing Paul Ince instead opting for Mick Mcarthy. For me no racism at all they had the option of a a proven manager or the option of promoting a player Big Mick was the obvious choice. O
If the FA lowered the pricing for their badges then there would not only be an increase in black qualified coaches but also coaches of all races. Our pricing structure compared to Spain and Germany is a joke and is surely one of the main reasons we have far less qualified coaches.

Weren't an argument, you honestly think them riots were a race riot or was it simply hundreds and thousands of opportunist thieving cuts of all races jumping on a bandwagon.
Also, the 'ghetto and USA weren't the discussion, you could harp on about South Africa as well, but the discussion was started about racism in London at a junior level football, something I think is obsolete or nigh on.
Still struggling to understand your comment on WHY DO WE HAVE WHITES IN THIS COUNTRY again I may have missed something in translation.
The 'Rooney Rule' has absolutely no bearing on whether someone actually gets the job at all, it's simply a stipulation that a qualified black coach must be interviewed if he applies. He can still be turned down after the interview, it's just attempting to stop the old mates club that means very few people with not a lot of qualification keep getting handed jobs. Warnock is past it and was never THAT good, but he gets handed the Palace job on a silver platter.
I still think part of the problem is that there aren't enough black coaches in the first place to be interviewed, but that's an entirely separate issue.

However in kids football, Ive heard nothing. either way in the past 10 years from U8 to U18
yeah, but i bet you aren't looked at funny by shopkeepers regularly or even people walking down the street or even followed and searched by the police simply because of the colour of your skin. I don't think many people realise the institutional racism that still exists for minorities which is part of the reason they find it acceptable to call you a honkey/white cunt etc, that and they're complete prats themselves.
Minority Looked at funny by shopkeepers Stop and searched
Where is this and what year mate? Seriously, sounds like the 1970s in bloody Norfolk or something.
Lets thank fck it is a minority that have an issue with other peoples skin colour. A vey small minority now.
it's so easy for a white man to poke fun at this. I guess the fact the riots a few years ago, made up of a majority of black youths was simply a coincidence and not race related at all? Think.
I can't believe anyone has ever used the word honky...
I got called that endlessly when I accidentally took a "shortcut" through Tenderloin in SF...
Given the amount of racism they'd all no doubt encountered in their lives I managed to shake it off though.
Yeah make excuses for them. Only works one way after all.
don't think it's making excuses, all racism are perpetuated by idiots.
Total bollox mate
great argument, i'm convinced. WHY DO WE HATE WHITES IN THIS COUNTRY
Still struggling to understand your comment on WHY DO WE HAVE WHITES IN THIS COUNTRY again I may have missed something in translation.
Incident probably didn't even happen, just filled another couple of paragraphs.

For multiculturalism?
It stated HATE whites. My spellchecker changed it to have
If Rio Ferdinand is so upset about rude, offensive and abusive behaviour then he should have criticised Anton Ferdinabd when he verbally abused John Terry on the pitch.
Looks like your agenda is more than a bit skewed Smudger. Looking back at the original post, your little story doesn't connect does it: Cafctom said-
From his new book #2Sides: “I remember going to my first training session at Charlton. One of their kids called me a ‘black b*****d’ and we got into a fight immediately. The response of their coach John Cartwright was brilliant. He stepped in, took my side, made the boy apologise and banned him for a few weeks. I hadn’t even signed for Charlton. I was impressed.”
You don't follow something about that and think it somehow relates to the Terry/ Anton F incident?

I'd like to know how he knows the police stop and search due to the colour of the skin??? Did they say it???
Whilst not being able to comment on this persons circumstances; the Police have admitted that 30% of stop and search procedures in relation to people of black origin they have not had a valid reason for the stop. That is to say no crime has been commited in the area and they have stopped the black person for no reason other then a whim. I believe this is compared to less then 5 % in relation to people of a white minority.
So without being able to comment on this persons circumstances you comment quoting me?

(Obviously the use of the word doesn't do anything to help the cause of racial equality and stamping out racism and they shouldn't use it... )
Anyway - my point was, honky is a term that's used, whatever the rights and wrongs of who uses it and why.
obviously i'm talking about extremes here, but these employers exist, even if it's a subconscious thought that they push out of their mind, it's still there.

Also, the 'ghetto and USA weren't the discussion, you could harp on about South Africa as well, but the discussion was started about racism in London at a junior level football, something I think is obsolete or nigh on.
Still struggling to understand your comment on WHY DO WE HAVE WHITES IN THIS COUNTRY
again I may have missed something in translation.
I still think part of the problem is that there aren't enough black coaches in the first place to be interviewed, but that's an entirely separate issue.
Has anybody pondered the idea that there is not as many black people interested in coaching. Hence the massive ratios in the football league.
