I was called a 'honky c**t' for no reason by an eight year old kid on a tricycle in Homerton about ten years ago! :-D

You were probably laughing at him for still riding a trike at 8 years old.

I can't believe anyone has ever used the word honky...

Alexis Korner on Hot Chocolate's 'Brother Louie' (1973)
Rudolph Walker in probably every edition of 'Love Thy Neighbour' (1972-6)
    and, errr, that's it.

I thought Rio went to Forest Hill boys. Who was in rumble with Richard Rufus ? Was that Paul Elliott?
  • `Honky' LOL....I wouldn't feel put down in the slightest if someone threw that at me. It's a 70's classic and just sounds ridiculous these days. I think i'd just laugh to be honest.

Its like someone with milk bottle glasses calling you a clear sighted c***.

Definitely went to BBCS. Year below my brother. Absolute cock.
  • Rio played for Blackheath & District U11s at Hervey Road in Kidbrooke on Saturday mornings. The U11s manager was Dave Goodwin, who was Lennie Lawrence's opposition scout. So Charlton were in the pound seats. However, when Lennie moved to Middlesbrough, Dave went with him, and the link to Charlton became weaker. I guess Rio had a free choice when the time came to sign associate schoolboy forms and West Ham's Academy led by Tony Carr had an excellent reputation at the time
  • He was also well known by west ham at aged 11, played for London Schools.

Remember being asked at the meridian to round a team of U14s up as American side had come to play U12 London side came with 2 teams, U12 and U14.

We was there watching my mate play CH with Rio in the U12s

Remember beating them with a load of mates rounded up to play the U14s.
  • I can't believe anyone has ever used the word honky...

I got called that endlessly when I accidentally took a "shortcut" through Tenderloin in SF...

Given the amount of racism they'd all no doubt encountered in their lives I managed to shake it off though.

please don't imply that Racism isn't solely a white issue.

Incident probably didn't even happen, just filled another couple of paragraphs.

Been involved in my own football and kids football for over 30 years and barely heard a racist comment,

Think its a big myth and something that creates jobs through campaigns.

Can honestly say the same, I've been called a white bastard but I don't deem that to be racist, although I was slightly offended by being called a bastard when I'm in fact not.
In the past two seasons, Ive been called, a 'fckin Honky', White Cnut'

    This is in Vets football.

Weve had a black ref and a white ref and neither were interested.

guarantee it would hve been a 22 man brawl If I had the nerve to say anything derogatory via Racism.

I could go on but know the thread would be closed.

However in kids football, Ive heard nothing. either way in the past 10 years from U8 to U18

How you worked that out from what I said is impressive as I certainly wasn't implying it was only a white issue, I know it isn't.

yeah, but i bet you aren't looked at funny by shopkeepers regularly or even people walking down the street or even followed and searched by the police simply because of the colour of your skin. I don't think many people realise the institutional racism that still exists for minorities which is part of the reason they find it acceptable to call you a honkey/white cunt etc, that and they're complete prats themselves.
    Minority
    Looked at funny by shopkeepers
    Stop and searched

Where is this and what year mate? Seriously, sounds like the 1970s in bloody Norfolk or something.

Lets thank fck it is a minority that have an issue with other peoples skin colour. A vey small minority now.

I remember it from `Love Thy Neighbour' but its origins come from the southern states of America....well the term `Honky Tonk' anyway.

Yeah make excuses for them. Only works one way after all.
  • Honky a derogatory term for a Caucasian person.
there are three main theories for the origin of the word:
    1. the word originated from the practice of white males wishing to hire African-American prostitutes in the 1920's, and going to the appropriate part of town while honking their car horns to attract the whores. Some versions state that the reason for this was that the white men were too afraid to actually stop in those neighborhoods, so the honking would bring the hookers to them. Others say that since few African-Americans could afford cars back in that time, the honking signaled a higher-paying white client and would quickly gain the prostitutes attention.
    2. the term comes from the word "honky-tonk", which was used as early as 1875 in reference to wild saloons in the Old West. Patrons of such disreputable establishments were referred to as "honkies", not intended as a racial slur but still a disparaging term.
    3. "honkie" is a variation of "hunky" and "bohunk", derogatory terms for Hungarian, Bohemian, and Polish immigrant factory workers and hard laborers in the early 1900's. African-Americans began to use the word in reference to all whites regardless of specific nation of origin.

There's certainly seems to be a '70s theme coming out here.

I looked it up in OED according to that it and the first known use of the word is in 1904, though for 63 years it referred to manual labourers of any race. It is believed to be a variant of hunk - hardly very derogatory is it?

The first known uses of it in racial terms both come from America in 1967. As a noun, "[Stokely] Carmichael..told students: ‘The honkies—whites—are dictating your lives.’", Bridgeport (Connecticut) Telegram. And as an adjective, "George Washington was a honky slave owner who sold a black woman for a barrel of syrup" Pampa (Texas) Daily News.

Edit - sorry @All_Thaid_Up but I hadn't seen your post when I posted this. Didn't want you to think I was blanking you.

Whilst not being able to comment on this persons circumstances; the Police have admitted that 30% of stop and search procedures in relation to people of black origin they have not had a valid reason for the stop. That is to say no crime has been commited in the area and they have stopped the black person for no reason other then a whim. I believe this is compared to less then 5 % in relation to people of a white minority.
  • If Rio Ferdinand is so upset about rude, offensive and abusive behaviour then he should have criticised Anton Ferdinabd when he verbally abused John Terry on the pitch.

Instead Rio supported Anton and was quite offensive to Ashley Cole. I suggest Rio looks a little closer to home if he wants to stop such disrespectful behaviour.

Rewriting history. Ignoring the facts. Trying to hide something?
  • He did mug himself off with the Ashley Cole incident though. Cant be one rule for one...
