David Whyte tribute applause at 10th minute, suggestion

This is just a suggestion but seeing as we did the applause at 3rd minute for Powell perhaps we can do the same for David Whyte and sing David Whyte Whyte Whyte at the 10th minute?

Nice idea Disco. Anyone with contacts at the club on here these days? Maybe a picture of David on the screen for that minute of the game would be good?
    Great idea
  • Would personally prefer a minutes silence to offer our respects.

    Same here.

Would like this to catch on if the club don't though.

As someone born in '84 he was one of my first Charlton heroes.

Think both could be easily accommodated. I'll be singing Whyte Whyte Whyte in the tenth regardless

That would be a lovely tribute, Disco.

  • Yeah, great idea. Definitely show our respects one way or another.
  • There's a day a year to formally honour the fallen isn't there?

Have any other former players died this year?
  • Think a minutes applause is more achievable than a silence, what with Watford selling out and that. Saying that If the club got involved then maybe we could do the silence.
  • Be great to have a montage of Whytey's goals on the screen before the match! Anyone know how we could ask to make this happen?
  • Great idea Disco.
  • I can't make tthe game Saturday my inconsiderate mates getting married but my 10 year old sons gonna pay my respects for me by singing his name.iv shown him all his goals on here and he loved them all so if your looking down Mr whyte you have a new fan
  • A minute's silence before the game is much more appropriate, but that doesn't seem to happen in football nowadays with fans breaking into contrived clapping anyway.

With that said probably best to go for the 10th minute thing, and then just sing his name all game anyway!
  • Really think this is a good idea but would also like a proper minute's silence to reflect as well. In this way everyone would have a chance to remember.

I personally think a minutes applasue with a chant is better, it kind of brings back good memories of this player as well. David Whyte's family clearly knows he was a favourite back then and also enjoyed listening to his name at the Valley back then so I think that would probably put a smile to their faces.

  • IMO (although appreciate it should be dealt with case by case)

where one person has passeddressapplause is usually appropriate as a celebration of a life
where we are reflecting upon a large scale conflict or a human disaster where many lives are lost, silence would be best

Passed away too young for it to be a celebration. It's tragic and therefore silence is more fitting imo. Think it should form part of the annual remembrance.

I'm happy to contact Iain Liddle tomorrow ( Comms Dept) to see what he thinks as he would probably be involved with the Big Screen pic/montage and the publicity around the tribute.

Do Lifers want me to try to get this off the ground ?

Yes please. Would be wonderful to see him score at the Valley one last time.
  • Didn't realise the amount of goals he scored for us. Good idea. Again RIP David.
  • Applause on 10mins is a great idea. I'll be thinking about when he pushed the ball past Steve Walsh (I think), ran round him and tucked it home.
We went mental on the North Bank.
    RIP
  • It would be nice to do something, even if it was showing some of his goals before the match, he was part of my youth growing up and it's very sad news.
  • Iain Liddle is on leave but the Comms team are aware and have been discussing different options.

Personally I think the 10th minute idea is spot on.
  • Agreed lovely idea. Perhaps the club could also I invite his family. Might be too early but would be nice to give them the option. What a player he was,
  • I would personally prefer a minutes silence pre game with pic of DW on the screen, but given some pratt will spoil it, a minutes applause.
