Oh dear! I fear four young jockeys are facing a ban following the opening race at Lingfield won by a 28/1 shot.
In a 2 mile flat race, the horses crawled for the first couple of furlongs but then Tyrese Cameron on Certain Style took up the mantle and shot a furlong clear with some 14 furlongs still to go. The rest of the jockeys just watched and made no move to close the leader down until it became obvious to those watching that it was always going to be too late. The rank outsider won by 22 lengths with the rest of the horses separated by less than a length in total. The race for second place was a joy to behold but there is no facility, unfortunately, for punters to get meaningful returns for backing the "first loser"!!!

A morning AW apprentice race at Lingfield. I feel like thats not a race for the punters anyway.

Any race is an opportunity for punters, especially those that trade on Betfair where the quality of the race is not the be all and end all. But it has to be accepted the "element of risk" is increased when doing so in a field of apprentices albeit that these were not a bunch of jockeys that hadn't ridden before - the favourite was ridden by Warren Fentiman (the son of Duran, with 1,500 rides and named that after the boxer, Roberto Duran) and is one of the most promising up and coming riders with three winners already for the Richard Fahey stable that he is attached to. He and the other three jockeys won't make that mistake again that's for sure.

Constitution Hill is a big drifter for the Fighting Fifth following this lacklustre gallop at Newbury with Sir Gino this morning from 1.7 out to 5.0 but now back in to 2.8 on Betfair. If it runs then someone has got tremendous value but if it doesn't then all backers have done their dough:

To add to the confusion, it was subsequently discovered that the winner actually entered the wrong stall and Tyrese Cameron was cautioned as a result. All of the other four jockeys were suspended for 10 days each "for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placings".

Race 1 - 11:10am THE STAY IN CONTROL WITH BETUK 'HANDS AND HEELS' APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) (Part of the Racing Excellence Initiative)
The Starter reported that Tyrese Cameron, the rider of CERTAIN STYLE had originally entered the wrong stall. As a 7lb claiming apprentice, Cameron was accompanied in the enquiry by a BHA Jockey Coach. After both the rider and Starter were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, Cameron was cautioned.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of all beaten horses after the winner CERTAIN STYLE had been allowed to establish a sizeable uncontested lead through the early and middle stages of the race. Kyle McHugh, the rider of GOLD AURA, placed second, Mason Paetel, the rider of UPEPO (IRE), placed third, Warren Fentiman, the rider of SHAAD, placed fourth and Chloe Lyons, the rider of GRAND DUCHESS OLGA, placed fifth, were interviewed and shown recordings of the race. The 7lb claiming apprentices were accompanied in the enquiry by a BHA Jockey Coach. McHugh stated that his instructions were to sit last as his horse was stepping up in trip to 2 miles and to try and settle his mount which had ran freely in the past. From his position in last place. Paetel stated that his horse was having its first run at the 2 mile trip and so he was instructed to position his horse at the rear of the field. From his position at the rear of the field he became aware that the winner, CERTAIN STYLE had got away from the chasing pack but felt he would come back to them in the latter stages of the race. Fentiman stated his instructions had been to race prominently but get cover and Lyons stated her instructions were to make the running, but after travelling a furlong she felt that CERTAIN STYLE was running too freely so she decided to sit second and take a lead. She added that she felt that CERTAIN STYLE was going too quickly but admitted that she had allowed the leader to stretch too far clear. The jockeys acknowledged that due to their collective inexperience, approximately 4 furlongs out, when the riders began to ask their mounts for effort, it became apparent that the leader was not going to come back to the field. Having heard their evidence, Mchugh, Paetel, Fentiman and Lyons were all suspended for 10 days each for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placings.
The 100/1 had a Betfair Starting Price of 145.10 and the 125/1 had one of 503.82. The former hadn't beaten a runner in its last four outings but was stepping up to 10 furlongs for the first time in its 42 run career and had won twice off similar marks at the start of the year. The latter had shown nothing in its four runs and was running for the first time for Dominic Ffrench Davis, having formerly been with the now retired Geoffrey Deacon. Good luck to anyone who found either of those!

Surely, you would have done a win double.
The sensible bet, at those prices, would have been two EW singles and an EW double. But anyone who did find those two is probably a "pinsticker" or probably in a straight jacket!

Was similar action taken against the jockeys on the 2020 Derby when Serpentine won by about 10 lengths and never got challenged in the race?

I don't believe it was but, there again, that was slightly different in that Serpentine's actual winning distance was 5.5 lengths (as opposed to an "eased down" 22 lengths), the jockey didn't kick clear 14 furlongs out and the horse was at no point a furlong clear of the field. It could certainly be argued that the other jockeys were caught out in the Derby but it certainly wasn't visually anywhere near as bad as yesterday's race. Serpentine had to be ridden out to win the Derby whereas Certain Style could have virtually walked over the line.

Plenty to take on trust backing CH this season given his recent issues but at least he wasn't practically pulled up in this gallop like he was last time!

Agreed though the biggest thing to take on trust is that Nicky Henderson doesn't find an excuse to pull CH out even if he has declared it fit to run right now and why I won't back one of his ante-post. Now if it were to be 6/4 come the start then I would be sorely tempted to do so - you have to go back two and a half years for it to be that sort of price.

Agreed. Nicky Henderson is as cautious as they come. Would have to be very brave (or very tempted at the price) to back one of his antepost

Henderson has now said that CH has pulled up lame and is an unlikely runner for the FF. Who could have predicted that? The cynic in me says that now is the time to back him at 30 plus on Betfair!!!
Loose horse! Musselburgh runner who escaped track and ventured into town centre declared 'all good' by trainer
"Rufio, who has finished in the first three on five of his ten career starts under rules and was having his first start since May, was finally caught by a member of the public after stopping at traffic lights."
...... more intelligent than your average cyclist then.
Anyone have that? Captain Kinsella just won at 25/1 at Newcastle
A friend of mine has had horses with the trainer, John Gallagher, for years. Although he doesn't own a part of Captain Kinsella, below are the comments from one of his part owners. And no I didn't back it!!!
Last week was a big day for us with the return to the track of Captain Kinsella who since his antics at Doncaster & Wetherby had lost his wedding tackle.
He was accompanied to the track by Drumstick having a third relatively quick run in the opening apprentices race after two runs at Doncaster.
He was bred of course by the late Queen and like Captain Kinsella had been gelded in the summer after being bought at the sales. He didn't quite go the early pace and despite not getting the clearest of runs stayed on really well to finish 4th at 100/1, Good news for those who managed to get four places.
Expectations for Captain Kinsella weren't high as we just didn't know how he would cope with the bends and the longer trip of six furlongs. Also he hadn't gone right handed on the track yet.
At least he had the plum draw in one should he break well.
Unbeknown to me at the time he had drifted out to 200/1 in the betting although as we know the yard has had plenty of big priced winners over the years. Late support saw an SP of 80/1. Probably a more realistic price.
So he broke well under William Carson and although appearing to race keenly out in front he coped admirably with the bends and maintained his lead.
With a furlong to go it looked like he might even win but the short priced favourite Brave Byreflection would go clear in the final furlong and the second favourite Ottawa would nab second place close home.
Fair to say it was an unexpected visit to the winners enclosure. He showed good speed, possibly didn't quite get home over the six but bearing in mind he hadn't ran for six months it was a cracking run and those who had the ew double with an extra place for Drumstick were very happy. Could have been even better if placing a treble as the second division was won by Iconic Times, bread by Drumsticks' owners and had spent time at the yard as a foal/yearling.
So we awaited the handicappers assessment with interest. As this was the first run he'd had without steering issues he could have classed it as not enough to give a mark. But he did and bearing in mind the winner who had shown good form in her first run was given quite a generous mark of 71, we were a bit disappointed to get 67. Probably a couple of pounds higher than we expected but at least we now know he has ability.
Just hope he turns out to be more Ladweb than Paddy K!
So we have him to look forward to.Handicap or another novice next I'm not sure.
The yearling is fine but won't race until back end of next season.
She (Dream of Wunders) is in foal and will be covered again next year and it looks like there will be one more attempt to try and get Junoesque in foal next year.
Encouraging signs for the yard with Tenadaay and Dreambird Dolly (could be interesting if taking her chance off 58 on Tuesday) showing promise at two.
Old Painless a possible runner if Ffos Las is on this Monday.
My second cousin (1st cousins daughter) used to work for Gallagher during her school holidays, mucking out, cleaning, that kind of thing, ANYthing to be near lovely horses. She lives in Moreton in Marsh (now works in Oxford) and my uncle (her grandfather) lived in Little Compton which is very close to Gallagher's stables
I wonder how many times, in the history of horseracing, two brothers won the same race on the same day as Sean and James Bowen did when they dead-heated for first place in the Cheltenham 12.10 today?

Some races may look as if they're fixed but how can jockeys possibly fix a dead heat?

It was my fault for trying to be clever when I'm not!
