If we'd won both games would the Roland lovers have been saying, 'They're just warm up games. No need to read anything into it.'
Actually, no need to answer that.

    The Roland lovers hahaha ffs
You knew who I was talking about then!
Yeah, ValleyGary really should calm it a bit
    Time for a team talk.
What you got in mind big fella
  • I am. It's a complete f****ing disaster. If we can't completely hammer a Belgian 2nd division team with the cream of the English 3rd division / Standard de Liege castoffs, finest academy players, we are in trouble. FACT. I fear for us. It's out of the frying pan into the fire. The network isn't working. I am underwhelmed by our new signings. RD you are ripping the heart out of our Charlton. Is it too soon to be talking about the playoffs relegation?

I literally cannot tell if this is the finest satire I've ever seen or actually a serious post.
  • Will compare the attendance of opening home game to last season.
    Bet it'll be down loads.
Too many people will have slit their wrists before then at this rate!
  • Even if they are warm up games, even if the opposition are weaker or stronger, even if the opposition are ahead in preparation, even if our players are relative strangers to each other, even if we have a new style to sort out, and a new management team to get used to, does that mean we can learn nothing from the experience? It's as if it is supposed to all be like a session on a running machine?
Of course you can learn something from it all, other than it just being a physical exercise. I learned that Joe Gomez wasn't particularly phased by the association with more senior players. I learned that Cyska (?) and Bikey looked like they wouldn't mind the gig at Charlton. I learned a bit more about Phillips temperament, or a bit about things Loic might benefit from working on. There is a lot of other stuff to be gleaned from the experience than just the building of muscle, and the quickening of the heart rate. I would wager that Bob, his staff, and the players would know that too.
We were also learning stuff in the context of a game of football, in a stadium, with a ref and spectators with all that that implies.
To learn anything from the experience you have to observe it, and reporting on observations, even moving toward judgements is valid in my view. Judgements can shift with more experience and depth of knowledge, but there are also deadlines like the first game of the season, which mean that there comes a point when quite hard and fast decisions have to be made.

SE7toSG3 says he was there and the players were treating this like a training session. A training session 7 days into pre-season. Observations can be made but they won't be telling.

It's like judging a singer's voice just by hearing them speak.
  • Just a quick line having just got home from the match, those of you that did not attend you missed a great weekend
and some of the photos are just unreal.
As forthe football the high point is Gomez what a player for someone so young. He is class.

Just getting back to the hotel via a decent brewery, not the most gripping game but its hard to put into words how much the whole team were treating this as a run out, nothing more, we were sat among them and it was a training session that's all. A long way to come for a training session I know but it was good to see the communication from BP to Lawrie Wilson throughout the first half, they definitely all seemed happy with the new boss and it's clear they are just getting to grips with each other, lots of new faces out there.

A fair few addicks have made the journey, anyway a few pics.

Don't like those rugby socks! Or the shirts. Duchatelet out!

It was better than yesterday, but St Truiden were worse than Standard de Liege. For me it was our home grown ones who were particularly good, Fox, Phillips and Gomez in particular.
A fitter squad on a grass pitch may be better, we need to add about 80% to what we have seen so far.
I liked Bikey but he showed flashes of unnecessary poor temperament in the first half so I have my doubts. Cyska was an eager beaver, and if Nego can learn to make a quick decision to deliver a good out ball he may even turn out to be decent.
We were not that impressive up front though, it may have been lack of service. PP did not look to have progressed very much since last season.
Our number one priority is a senior/additional goalkeeper. Not because there is much wrong with Phillips and Pope, but I don't see them carrying us through the season.
My worry is naivety about the opposition we will face in the Championship. They are going to be tough and merciless. In the very brief flashes I have seen of Yoni he does not look in any way talismanic and unless he has more to offer he will not be the answer to withstanding the players we will be facing.
OK, I know we have to sort ourselves out first, but once done we also need to be very aware of the dangers of opponents.

Very good analysis, Seth. Keep it up.

Agree with most of above esp sign JG tout suit. Only disappointment was lack of a visible plan to get ball from back to forwards. Seemed to be down to whoever had the ball to improvise. No Poyet to come & get.

"Only disappointment was lack of a visible plan to get ball from back to forwards." Pretty crucial in a game of football, I'd say.

Seth - I now know for sure that Theresa May will be plagarising large parts of that in her statement to the House of Commons later today.
  • A question for you to answer. What is the purpose of pre season games (especially for a new manager) ?

    A. To beat everybody no matter how or who in meaningless games.

    B. To have a look at the whole squad, assess fitness, form and how they will fit as a team. Look partcularly at the youngsters to decide who is ready for first team squad selection. See and identify weaknesses that we try to resolve ASAP.

    Answers on a postcard.
  • Of course you are right, Granpa. I had an initial look at our c £3M worth of new strikers (Pete and Igor) and am still in the dark re where our goals are going to come from. There is an awful lot of work to be done in next few weeks. Roll on more signings and more friendlies.
  • People keep saying 'you can't judge the team on one game', I agree entirely but next to no one is facking judging it on one game.

You can't have been on CAFC twitter or Facebook then.
  • Got back in early hours - Bikey had decent distribution but well over weight! Gomez looked decent - we need another keeper- Phillips too inexperienced - strikers didn't look too threatening!

  • Any oppo players impress those over there? The lanky STVV CB looked decent on the ball altough PP hardly bothered him. Their loan RW looked decent but Wiggins a way behind the rest in terms of fitness. Fox sure to start season.

Fox looked decent - so did Cousins - nice stand - the west stand - beer and chips were good (in Belgium) and easy to get to.

All good points, Seth, very well expressed.

  • It seems that we have gone from barely any strikers, to quite a few, without stumbling across any that can create chances for themselves, making a creative player a priority - or a big lump target man/hold-up player at the very minimum. PP and Igor looked alright without ever looking particularly dangerous - the collision with the keeper showed Igor was at least trying to get onto the end of one of very few decent crosses, but at no point did the STTV defence looked particularly worried.

On the other hand, we have a very promising looking defence, even Nego is not a write-off with good coaching and confidence, and the kids who did step up look very good indeed - Gomez surely won't be first choice due to age/inexperience but if he had to step in, it wouldn't concern me. Sign Bikey up and get him in shape and he'll do very well.

Promising signs but also very clear indicators we have a long way to go before we're ready for the Championship - though there is time enough to work on the weaknesses.
  • I learned that Nego has potential, Munns, Phillips and Lennon not ready. Cwka doesn't bring anything to the table, Bikey could if we can get him fit. Gomez looked comfortable in the team. My biggest concern was that we looked lightweight and short of ideas up front. But too early to draw conclusions - will help Peeters clarify a few things hopefully.

Aren't they based on those worn by our 1947 FA Cup winners ?

It's an omen, I tell ya!

  • Remember, traditionally at the Welling game, Charlton name a different XI for each half.

Expect about 25 players, including youth and development players, to get a run out.

That seems a fair assessment - but given the pursuit of O'Grady I think Bob and RD are well aware of the lack of physical power up front and intend to deal with it - either by giving him better terms or pursuing alternative targets. This has to be the priority signing now for me - last season a lot of our problems was the inability to get the ball to stick up front, even with Yann, who was left stranded far too often.
