Wrong, Killer went to Derby for a record £333k transfer into our kitty who never impressed there and then was sold onto Wet Spam.
    Not wrong. Hales qualifies.

The Original Poster asked for players who played for Charlton before playing for West Ham at some point in their career. Hales was one of those.

With Poyet going to West Ham, it got me thinking how many players played for Charlton before playing for West Ham and some point in their career

Also the likes of Kyel Reid, Mark Robson, Paul Kitson and of course Alan Curbishley played for West Ham before joining Charlton, which disqualifies them from being included.

Hey, Paulie - it's your thread. When are you going to post your best Charlton - West Ham XI ?
Just seen this as I was on hols last week

In the absence of Paulie ,here's my 11. I think it is actually an excellent side.

    GK Sasa Illic
    RB Billy Bonds (Capt)
    LB Chris Powell
    CB Simon Webster
    CB Christian Dailly
    RM Robert Lee
    CM Lee Bowyer
    CM Scott Parker
    LM Paul Konchesky
    ST Paolo Di Canio
    ST Derek Hales
  • This thread has hi-lighted the surprisingly small amount of players ‘nicked’ from us by WHU over the last half century. I seem to recall the Bonds deal being wrapped up before he had any knowledge of it - pretty much the exact opposite of the most recent transaction. As Bob Dylan says ... the times they are a changeeeeing.

Ok , move Powell to centre back and bring in Scott Minto at left back . Carlton Cole for Di Canio ?

Edit Just seen Malcom Allison's name. I believe he was a centre back so he can replace Dailly.

  • Yep, looks good, Richard.

Mally Ally at CB, and I suppose Carlton Cole up front.

Come on, people ....... we really don't want Cole, if we can help it. Any more ideas?

Great minds Malcolm Allison CH, I'm still working on the striker :-)

It is only when I saw this thread I realised that 9 of my Charlton / West Ham 11 played for us first. Also Bonds,Lee,Bowyer,Parker and Konchesky were all youth team products.

The only reason I didn't pick Defoe because he never actually played in Charlton's first team.

Going the other way, it is a far inferior team..

    GK Noel Dwyer
    RB Mark Bowen
    LB Jack Burkett
CB Leroy Rosenoir ( I remember he ended his career at CB)
    CB Christian Dailly
    RM Benny Fenton
    CM Alan Curbishley
    CM Matt Holmes
    LM Paolo Di Canio
ST Paul Kitson ( for that goal at Palace)
ST Svet Todorov ( for that goal at Palace)

You could put Chris Powell at LB in the "going the other way" team also?
Jack Burkett was a real powder puff full back.

Benny Fenton is a good pick. My Dad tells me he was a quality player in midfield, a real crowd pleaser.
We'll overlook the fact that he was once Millwall's manager (!)

Arguing against the Hales criteria, move him to CF instead of Di Canio and put Sean Newton on the wing in a 4-3-3 :-0

Remember this is a joint team . I understand Burkett was poor for us , but wasn't he a Cup Winners Cup Winner for the Hammers? But clearly if Hales and Powell are eligible for both sides then they should be in both.

Having had time to reflect maybe I should have put Mark Robson in the West Ham to Charlton team on the left. Paolo can move up front and drop either Kitson or Todorov.

Where is Uncle ? It would be interesting to get the West Ham perspective on the teams .

  • Okay, Richard ..... put Robson in (for that wonder goal at Bristol City in the Cup).

Oi, Paulie ....... it's your thread, where are you?
You've got a team to pick.

How about Steve Jones or Mervin Day? And Mat Fry.

    Paul Kitson ?

Good shout - but another who played for West Ham before coming to Charlton.
    So not within Paulie's rules.

Although he did then return to West Ham.

All the other way around….although Day went to West Ham with Curbs…as did Peacock.

Alex Dyer was at West Ham as a coach after being a player with us.
  • How about Steve Jones or Mervin Day? And Mat Fry.

Don't think Steve Jones is better than Di Canio , Kitson or Todorov. Day never played for Charlton and Fry never appeared in the Hammers first team otherwise he would have been a good shout.

But I did wonder who would manage these imaginary teams . As managers ( not as players ) Curbs and Pardew made the opposite journey . So they could manage the respective teams . Day and Peacock would assist Curbs and Dyer could be Pardew's assistant.

    Some more links.

Future Charlton managers Andy Nelson and Ian Dowie both played for the Hammers as did our former assistant boss Harry Cripps although he never made a first team appearance at Upton Park.

    Nope, can't accept Pardew.

Chris Powell can be manager, right?

    ;o)

He is a forward so Oggy gets his wish. He can replace Cole.
