BP: I jumped at the opportunity to be Charlton Head Coach (part 1 of 2)

  • What's a 'traditional' club?

A club over 100 years old with the same name playing in the same area.

It's not a concept we really have here but in other countries clubs are often younger and have merged and/or moved eg Bob's last club.

Think of MK Dons as not being a traditional club.

We forget that Charlton, despite being a young club in England, are older than many continental clubs and have a less complicated history.
  • Anyone catch which train he caught? Must have gone for a slash when it came in.
  • What's a 'traditional' club?

One where tradition is overly important to the fans because, er that's as good as it gets!
  • Loved the train analogy ...either knows his onions, got lucky or thats Spanner peesh take.

Im not digging BP out, IMO this hastily assembled release doesnt do BP justice. It will be cited in other media in the next week....
  • Indeed @The Red Robin

I may be overly sensitive but the article has been written with one man as the hero and it isnt BP.

It also appears to have been subsidised with connectors from a non native speaker. So Liddle probably the fall guy.

But I can be hypercritical because its PR and these things matter.

Need experienced players? Focus on your willingness to work with young guns ;)

Starting to presume RD is no way Hand s off - he micro manages

I think you're right here. It's the kind of angle I expected and it's the one we got. I might be too cynical but it's my gut feeling.

Thanks Sir 'enry, I'm sure that's exactly what Bob meant ;)

  • Says the right things, lets hope he gets us playing good competeitve football.

    100% support .

A decent in depth interview through the clubs website, during the close season, within 7 days of the appointment. Not bad going.

Also pleasing to hear DM is going to be Peeters right hand man.
  • Look up tradition in the OED and you will find a simple definition of 2 words - Charlton Athletic.

  • Don't think next season is about Bob Peeters. I think it will be about the players brought in for him to coach. We'll know a lot more in 27 days.

  • Question is Bob, how much longer will we be a traditional club for?
  • Back to Bob, good luck to him. Everything I feel will boil down to the quality of the arrivals he's given. His main job I suspect will be centred around organising and crafting a squad spirit.

The Championship is as much about togetherness as it is ability.

    Indeed, Dan.

If BP can recreate that fantastic team spirit that SCP ( and then JR ) built, that will be a very important factor in how successful is his tenure at our Club.

Getting the players on side & working for each other, whether they be "home grown" or not, is of paramount importance from Day One IMHO.

Getting the fans on side will follow close behind if we see a united team of players & their management staff hitting the ground running.

And this could happen before the first ball is kicked if only BP can sell his vision of the season ahead to young Diego and also Morro.....

  • All the best Bob. Just like anyone in the hot seat, I give my full support and hope for the future that this is another great managerial move.

Time is gone to talk about Riga leaving and dwelling on the past.

Time to look forward and see who comes in and the style of football.

First time in years it is too hard to predict what level the squad will be at come August.
  • If Bob's only initially signed on for a year , then who is going to want to join us apart from out of contract, loans or network players, it doesn't sound great?

I notice Riga has only got a one year rolling contract, which I assume is similar so maybe thats the way things are these days for managers.
  • After it is mentioned he will be at the Valley next week, couldn't that explain the reason for the contract negotiations dragging out with Morrison and Poyet? Surely they would want to sit with Bob face to face and talk about the vision of the coming season - I hope this is one of the reasons at least, and that Bob will do a good job recruiting two of our best players to new deals
  • A year contract...i guess it keeps the manager on his toes If fear and uncertainty is a good motivator...and saves RD a bit of dosh, hang on a minute, we have a reason peeters was appointed.

Okay, I'm not going to dig out the bloke after that interview. Words are only words, and in the end they can mean very little. He didn't say anything wrong or negative, as expected.

I don't believe in the new guy, as of yet, but yet again that's because I know f*ck all about him apart from his name is Bob peeters, he's an ex spanner, and he kept waasland braslav up.
  • I admit I've been willing to back up RD and the appointment of Peeters but I really don't understand the one year contract thing. It doesn't promote stability and surely can't be encouraging to players coming in or renewing contracts. Ok it means if Peeters doesn't work out they can get rid cheaply but other than that I don't get it. Unless that's the way they do it in other leagues which is why he is head coach not manager. Even so I don't agree with that approach. Still willing to back Peeters, that hasn't changed.
  • Thought this paragraph was telling:

Although he has developed a reputation as a coach who puts his faith in youth, Peeters admits his current break is barely a holiday at all with the search for more experienced reinforcements to the Charlton squad having already begun.

  • What's a 'traditional' club?

One where Acker Bilk (age 85) will be our Marquee signing.
  • That piccie of Bob is not very flattering at all , looks like he's going to turn into the hulk.
  • Bob your there --------------he was just shy i think. probably the Millwall thing its a bit like having an STD and it being all over the WWW.

  • Acker Bilk ------------with our pitch last year maybe we should have played "stranger on the shore" as we came out----great tune.
  • Already working hard behind the scenes? ... Ah that old acorn - I've used that a few times myself
  • Acker Bilk ------------with our pitch last year maybe we should have played "stranger on the shore" as we came out----great tune.

Yup, and he's probably still got better lungs than Ajdarevic.

    That was my thinking, sasquatch.

If it does happen, it will surely elevate Bob in the eyes of many Addicks.

  • Nice message from big bobby Peeters

    Welcome good luck

Bobs much nicer looking when he smiles ...

Image in footie is of high value

We should know this, Lennie - has a warm and friendly face. Curbs dismissed the relevance of Image because he was well respected from his playing days.

Dowie - need a thousand words to paint that picture

Pardew...Great example. Inside he think s he is ugly but goes for bling as he pretend s he is good looking. Just like Ronaldo. They then become over-focussed on image

Parkey -friendly face and great genuine style for him

Powelly - well he looks like Denzel so he is sorted. Denzel crossed with the Devil in Legend films.

Riga - priceless just for the hours of self doubt created in SuperAls fragile psyche. Trust the guy he wants to see in the mirror to rock up at the Valley.

BP - blank canvas. Prioritise his image consultancy...

Some will say it s irrlevant but its highly relevant to the players

Right thats far too much waffle from me for the day.

New concrete link to a domestic player tomorrow please. We need 8-10 ideally with 80% having domestic experience
