The market might be broken (though I'd simply call it unsustainable, rather than broken), but if you're in the Championship, regardless of where you get your players, you still have to work within it. If you can work it sensibly, then more the better. Powell managed to do it, when he had the support of twiddle dee and twiddle dumb. Low cost players, relatively low wage structure. The team achieved greater than the sum of its parts. He worked the broken market.
We can't call the past 6 months successful however. Whatever Roland's doing, it doesn't seem to be working.
Perhaps he can negotiate Belgian wages with the players if he agrees to only accept Belgian level profits on the club's successes, with the balance going to Demelza.
My view is that £500k should buy you better! Why not use the £500k to entice somebody who is out of contract and younger in relation to enhancing the wages we can offer!
I thought they wast.....sorry paid 700 euros for him. I'm sorry for this negativity - I happen to believe that our new owner is a complete joke - and whilst I have been looking for evidence to the contrary, I think the lack of it since he has taken over justifies my stance. He can turn it round, but if it looks like sh*t, smells like sh*t, then it probably is sh*t! I was positive when he first took over and have been largely positive over the years, but I call it as I see it.
Me too...its a cultural thing. English dont like an ego with no technical, Belgian politics lapped him up be because he was egotistical in his socialism and that was probably refreshing for them.
Also agree with the comments on the adjustment in valuation in players for the Championship. Promoted teams are built around domestic players.
Of course Thuram was worth millions so proves the futility of domestic value

You'll also make more money when you sell domestic players. Luke Shaw wouldn't be worth anywhere near £30m if he wasn't English but English clubs are willing to pay that kind of money for English players.
I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't just cave in to players wage demands. If we had thrown say 12k pw at Hamer, Dervite, Morrison etc they would still be here. Same if we offered that to O'Grady. However if we think, or our wage structure only allows, that we can afford only 8k pw then we should stick to it. If that means we miss out on players so be it.
To be honest as nice as it is to have a knee jerk reaction surely the only way to decide wether or not missing out on O'Grady is a big deal will be in the context of the first game and who else we've been able to secure between now and then ?
It's not certain yet that we've even missed out on COG. Seems a fee had been agreed but not as yet the way payment is structured. That is not insurmountable. Likewise terms with COG have not yet been agreed but once again it seems negotiations are continuing. Let's wait and see what transpires before we give up on this completely.

There isn't any way we're paying £8k a week or anywhere near it. Our top earners now are on about £5k, which is why I think we will struggle to recruit in England if RD wants to cut the wage bill.
Is he really worth breaking the bank over wage demands? If we signed him I wouldn't mind at all but I certainly wouldn't throw money at him. Yes he had good season last year but prior seasons weren't that great. If we are going to pay higher wages I'd personally prefer to look at a higher class of player. Although can we afford a higher class of player if we can't match his wages?
Surely RD would have done his homework on the average salary of a Championship player before he bought the club? If he can't afford to or doesn't want to even pay players their current salary then why buy the club?

One way to cut the wage bill is to try and sign or re-sign players on lower individual salaries.
The other is to reduce the size of the squad.
We've certainly done the latter so far with 11 players released and others not taking up offers (BH & DD).
The danger of course is that you end up with a very slim squad both in terms of numbers (we have 21 pros at this point in term) and in terms of experience (we have maybe seven or eight players who have played more than a handful of championship games (JJ, RW, CS, RW, JC, SC, LW, RG)

No it's not!
He is an average journeyman footballer who happened to have a reasonable season in a struggling team last year. The club certainly should not be held to ransome over this deal.

I'm not sure what you are refering to with "No it's not!" unless you meant "No he's not!" Either way we seem to be in agreement.
I think it is fair to say that unless you are playing in the top flights around the World and are exceptionally talented, the bubble is bursting on big salaries for average players. A bit of reality is kicking in, loss making businesses should not = unrealistic budgets. £240-250k PA is not a bad deal relative to various professions which are far more important.

Just because we've missed out on a player doesn't mean its a big conspiracy. We've missed out on countless players over the years.
It's frustrating and I wish we didn't but he's obviously got a plan and a wage bill to stick to.
Honestly, some people have watched too many films.
