If we are to sign COG and then 3/4 other players with championship experience to compliment other possible imports from abroad/the network to help them settle in and understand the league then the strategy has potential to work quite nicely imo.
Wether this materialises/actually works is something we'll have to just wait out and see..
Would be happy with COG to be fair, maybe not the most prolific but an improvement on what we have and also having a player who can actually put away a penalty isn't all bad.. I wouldn't say we have a peno specialist atm, okay there's Jackson but his recent record isn't anything to shout about.
What is wrong with people on here? 500k for a top 10 champ goalscorer it's a bargin, only 28 strong target man in his prime, Yes Please Mr Roland
Not sure, I suppose some people either:
1. Still rememember us spending a £1m on Andy Gray, the Championship's top scorer at the time, and him proving completely ineffective. Similarly the £1.5m spend on McLeod, or the £2.5m on Varney. The proof is in the pudding (in our shirt)
2. Are struggling to come to terms with Roland's strategy. You just start getting your head around the fact that its a wave of cost-cutting, potential strong youth / overseas make up, with a more European style of play. Then we all of a sudden are rumoured to be lumping out a fair whack for a northern lump as a target man !
Personally, i'd be cautiously optimistic if we follow this one through.
Our lack of presence up front post-Yann was utterly painful. But if you exclude penalties COG scored 10 outfield goals last season, his best ever season. Certainly an improvement on what we currently have, but not proven enough (for that fee) to be punching the air with, and no idea how he will fit into Peeters style of play. But at least he knows what the Championship is about.
D I agree about the Andy Gray, Varney, and Mcleod, my worst era supporting Charlton, hated it. However for every one of them theres a Mendonca, Andy Hunt, Billy Paynter Charlie Austin who all came good about that time after averaging about 10/12 goals a season (without googling it)
Optimistic yes but a step in the right direction if we do get this kind of player IMO
Perhaps RD has learnt a lesson that in this league you need a striker who can put himself about up front and nick a few goals and realised getting rid of Yann was a mistake, so looked around the league at a viable option who could do a similar job?
Played well against us at The Valley, but this is all smoke and mirrors, just cant see it happening, it goes against the grain of everything that RD has done since he took over.
Well. Clive mendonca scored 19 goals in a struggling and eventually relegated Grimsby side before we signed him for £700,000.
Trying not to compare Mendonca V O Grady but our crcumstances were a lot different then as well, I loved Mendonca don't get me wrong, ok he scored 7 more goals would be interested to find out how many of them 19 goals were Pens as well.
Mendonca had been a top scorer for a few seasons. though, I think. Very different kind of player, too.
Yeah fair enough, BUT im taking above information that he scored 19 in his last season for Grimsby then he only scored 73 goals in 10 years previous, hardly prolific.
My point is that we could just be getting a player on the way up, aged 28 like Mendonca hit his prime,
I don't get this 'he scored penalties' line, such a load of old shite
Only mentioned it as a comparison as some people were mentioning COG 'only' scored 10 goals from open play and the other 5 were pens.
My point is that some people moaning hes 28, and only socred 10 goals and had not been that prolific previously, Mendonca in my opinion is decent comparison, just to see how it pans out.
what if this is not the only striker we're going to sign? Sounds like a great foil for another, quicker player.
Church ??
Watch, Reza will have such a stupendous World Cup that he will be right up there with Messi and Ronaldo, and we will be fighting off approaches from Real and Barca.
Even if he doesn't score twenty goals himself he would make a useful partner for someone like Reza played up front not out wide. Big/little is a bit of a cliche but it is a proven one, it works. Style comes a long way second to substance when it comes to results!
Not having a moan at you CPL, agree with what you said, I just find the argument that others have used, that he scored 5 pens makes him less good is just silly

Why is it silly (or a load of shite) ?
Unlike other areas of the side, strikers are rightly / wrongly primarily judged at first on their scoring record / ratio. Whether that player is a penalty taker or not can strongly impact on his goal scoring record as it can potentially add 5-10 goals to his tally for the season.
So it is not being used as a negative, it is being used to try and add some additional information to the picture. No ?
This transfer makes no sense to me, seems to go against most of what RD would want, especially with no input from Big Bob.
Matthews and Chapple are still around, and I'm sure Big Bob have stated what sort of players and squad he wants to work with next season, he's hardly going to up sticks and move to another country without having a squad of players that he feels he can work with.
I don't really think COG can be compared to Mendonca, but in all honesty i wouldn't mind him as a signing. If he doesn't so be it, but if he does it would be a welcome addition. IF we can surround him with better players, who knows he could surpass 15. That is a BIG IF as we don't know who else we are looking at. But 15 goals for a team who got relegated (regardless of some being penalties) is still a better option than what we have.

But it's being used as a stick to beat the player with, not to add context.

Think penalties is a very valid point, Gerrard scored 13 for Liverpool last year - 10 were penalties, this means he's a good penalty taker - does it make him a great striker?
I would be happy with O'Grady though - am sure he is better anything unearthed by the youtube scouts RD is using. Wondering if he is connected at all to Morrison - were they together at Wednesday?
Of his 11 open play goals last season, 10 came in pairs - which might suggest he is a form player rather than a week in, week out striker.
I think in a team creating chances more than we did for the majority of last season would also give Marvin Sordell a decent chance of getting up there with 15 goals. Bolton might want to recoup a bit more of what they paid though.

I'd quite like to see Sordell back here actually. I'm sure Bolton won't put up much of a fight for him!

My life just hasn't come up to the expectations I had when I was 18.
Quite please about Chris O'Grady rumour though.
