Schmeichal is out of contract at the end of the season as are most of Leicester's players. Ben could probally double/treble his wages sit on the bench for 3years, then leave on a free to a Championship side, or if Leicester get relegated he would be their number1, if he is astute enough during those 3years he could build up a nice nest egg to set him up for life.
Alnwick came in on a free (as a Barnsley reject) and was just as good as Hamer - different strengths but overall of a similar level. I'd be happy for Hamer to stay, but he is replaceable.
Leicester interested in #cafc number one Ben Hamer. Full story in tomorrow's @SthLondonPress. Expand
A friend of mine who is a neighbour, spoke to Ben briefly & texted me saying:
"Spoke to him he is aware of Leicester and West Brom interest but only seen on social media sites"
Worrying, we NEED to sign him up , Leicester are extremely keen - He would be a massive loss
I'm very with RD plans, but little things like this need tying up, our defence is excellent , surely we could get Ben to sign - Im getting sick of all this contract talk and nothing happening with our better players.
So he's as aware as any of us then. Bit of a non-story isn't it?
the thing is though pope is doing so well in league two that he has to be atleast considered. imo signing morrison, dervite, poyet, astrit and obika are more important. hamer has had a few good games but so what, do people forget the fact that he made so many mistakes last season and enough to be dropped this season.
For me it's not about how good or bad Hamer is (and I'm not a huge fan) but that he and a few others who would possibly attract a fee (BH, MM, DD) might leave for nothing so seriously limiting the amount the club can spend. We will get a small development fee for DP if he doesn't re-sign.
It would appear that Charlton aren't alone in having players out of contract in June. That's normal "life" now in the divisions outside the Prem. Financial Fair Play, brought in this season, also has something to do with this state of caution amongst Club owners. Wilson in the South London Press stated his hope that Duchatelet offers contracts to the other defenders including Hamer, but doesn't expect the owner to do anything to be done until the season ends. As others have already posted, this waiting game is unsettling for players and fans alike. I would like to think Riga is reporting back to the owner about the necessity of holding on to the players who are contributing so much to Charlton's hopeful survival. Duchatelet will be listening to "his man" - unfortunately he made it abundantly clear he was never going to listen to Chris. Let's hope the owner acts quickly to secure contracts before we lose our better players to rivals.
Being a number two in the Premier League is a much bigger deal than being a number one in a relegation dogfight in the Championship.
You can end your career saying "I played in the Premier League", even if they are not playing regularly week in and week out. Its easy for us fans to say "oh he is only going to be a number 2", but any player will be looking at that situation and believing in their own ability that they can go there and play a part.
Many would have thought the same about Ben Alnwick when he came to us, and he ended up being our number one on merit for some time.
Once we know we are staying up I hope the club move as quickly as possible to secure the spine of the team with existing players - signing Hamer, Dervite and ideally Poyet who are part of a team showing mid-table form makes sense to me as it reduces the risk on finding replacements. I think the club have enough to do in securing better forwards and wingers.

Don't remember Hamer being dropped this season. He was injured, and then Alnwick took his chance, but Hamer has consistently proven that he can come back from set-backs and command a place in the team. He was part of the team that won L1 at a canter, and for the past three seasons he's been part of a defence that consistently features in fewest conceded columns. He was a huge part of our upturn in form last season when he came back into the team and his best game came at Brighton away last season which was a big moment in us staying up. He's not the best keeper on the planet but he deserves more respect than he's got on this thread in my opinion

Of course he deserves more respect. The wind changed today, didn't you know ?

It's true but there are going to be a lot of players coming on to the market in the summer who have not signed contracts. Most will be worse than what we currently have but there will be better. For instance Leicester have a number of players out of contract. To replace BH MM DD we may get better for the same or even less bucks. It's a judgment call by the network.
Of course, the network is the issue. If we bring in more polish peters and negos to replace then it's a disaster, but if we pick up quality frees and pay a few bucks we could be challenging next season.
Has once again proved he is a decent Championship keeper, sign him up as it will be a lot cheaper than finding another keeper of his caliber. Also has one of the best beards in Football!

Gratitude due.
Exactly, and a deflected goal and a poor back header that dropped him in it is hardly enough to warrant any stick anyway

And don't forget his dressing room influence.
Sign him up asap
