Ben is getting some serious interest, **Friend spoke to him

Leicester interested in #cafc number one Ben Hamer. Full story in tomorrow's @SthLondonPress.

A friend of mine who is a neighbour, spoke to Ben briefly & texted me saying:

"Spoke to him he is aware of Leicester and West Brom interest but only seen on social media sites"

Worrying, we NEED to sign him up , Leicester are extremely keen - He would be a massive loss

I'm very with RD plans, but little things like this need tying up, our defence is excellent , surely we could get Ben to sign - Im getting sick of all this contract talk and nothing happening with our better players.

let him go.Pope will be our number one next season, and he can actually catch/command his area.

whaaaat? so if it was between Pope or Hamer for the start of the season you would choose Pope?

  • Nothing will be sorted until we know what league we are in and that is fair enough.

Could be to late by then? 2x Premier league clubs interested in you .. Your current club aren't really showing any interest in you ? not good for Ben's head

I meant the players are waiting, not the club.

    OHHH i see
  • I agree that he should be a priority, but, unfortunately, like so many of the other players that are out of contract, it will have to wait until the Summer. After all, if you were Hamer's agent. would you advise him to sign a contract now, when you know you could go for nothing in the Summer, but still have CAFC as a (very good) fall-back option if the right move did not come about?

And likewise, from the club's point of view, would you want to be negotiating a (say) three-year contract on terms when the player's agent will no doubt be saying that they want a premium for all that time because they do not know which division they will be in next year, or if all this talk of investing in the squad might come to nothing (so he might be in another relegation fight next year)?

It is a bad situation all round, although not caused by anyone currently at the club. Just goes to show what an absolutely appalling situation we would have been in without the takeover.

  • Contract / no contract if there is genuine interest from the top flight and he wants to go, then he will probably end up going regardless. The only thing a contract will do is ensure we get a transfer fee.

If this is true, he has a choice between playing in goal for Charlton and bench warming in the premiership, as I can't see him being first choice in that division.

  • Alnwick was better, IMO. There are other keepers out there (not suggesting we get Alnwick back)
  • Ben is a decent keeper, but not obviously PL standard, unless he fancies being a benchwarmer. Reading let him go as they had 2 keepers better than him, for example.
Of course while negotiating a new contract, it's always good to have interest expressed in you from elsewhere, it got Wiggins a new contract for start!
  • He's aware of interest in him by what he's read on Facebook and Twitter?
  • We should only be letting go of players who are underneath the quality level of what the club is currently pitching at (21st in the Championship).

Ben Hamer is not a relegation side level or League One side level keeper - he's much better than that. He's a better keeper than Rob Eliot who is making a very decent career for himself in the Premier League.
  • I think our Ben might have a 'good' agent????
Only doing his job I suppose but can cause a bit of disharmony with the player and the club.
I like BH a lot and think he will get better, also think he is a 'Charlton' player. Also agree with others that I don't think he is a premier league keeper yet and should definitely stay with us and enjoy the ride!!!
  • wot alot of old cock. So if Ben hadnt seen anything on the social media bollox would he think he was shit then ?
  • Yes, can't imagine him being anything than Leicester's number 2 - if that appeals to him we are best getting rid.
  • Who is the current West Brom number 1, as surely he is not going to displace Schmeichel at Leicester.

Ben Foster. Not much hope there either
  • We have a quality hot prospect on loan at York if Ben wants to go let him go say thanks very much and use what we have instead of losing them to others

  • yes i honestly think pope in the next few years will be class, as for hamer ive never been a fan.Im not denying hes a good shot stopper, but other parts of his game let him down massively
  • Seems a good character and good to have around the changing room.

He is a good shot stopper (sometimes), and can have good games, but if we ignored the matches at Sheff weds and Leeds he isn't the thing that makes me gut up in the morning.

He wouldn't get anywhere near the Leicester or West Brom first 11. He is a mid Championship goalkeeper who I am pleased to have at Charlton.
  • Hamer has won us so many points over the last couple of seasons. He's one of the best keepers in the league - and he's still very young for a GK
  • If he'd rather sit on the bench in the Premiership then good luck to him.

No chance of him being #1 over Foster or Schmeichel.
  • No way is Hamer prem quality!
  • I like Hamer and rate him as a decent keeper. He is not Prem class yet but seeing as keepers develop later than outfield players I think he has the potential to be a prem player for a number of years.

Of course he has his faults. All players do, particularly at our level. Jackson has no pace, Morrison dives in etc. However, Hamer's occasional flapping at crosses is his current downfall and one he will need to address.

He has some real attributes such as shot stopping, which after all is what we all want from a keeper. Surely we'd be more worried by a keeper who could catch everything but didn't actually save a shot?

Alnwick played well for a number of games but he is not as good as Hamer. Pope is doing extremely well at York but we should not use this as the reason for fast tracking into the first team. Particularly if we are a Championship team next year.

I'd like Hamer to stay but the uncertainty surrounding his future may mean he decides to try his luck elsewhere next season.
  • Who is the current West Brom number 1, as surely he is not going to displace Schmeichel at Leicester.

Schmeical is out of contract in the summer and there's been rumours of him moving on but I still don't see Hamer being a first choice keeper in a promoted side , they'd surely go for someone more experienced.

  • If he'd rather sit on the bench in the Premiership then good luck to him.

No chance of him being #1 over Foster or Schmeichel.

This. Decent keeper but he isn't even close to Casper or Foster. If he wants out then let him go. Hardly an irreplacable player to put it mildly.
