Corners

Today and against Huddersfield we've had about 20 corners and time and time again they didn't beat the first man. I know JJ scored from one vs QPR but that seems a one off. For a team who struggle to create chances in open play you need to make them count.

Sort it out Jose!

  • You've only just noticed? It goes back a little longer than the last two games, more like 15 years.
  • Jackson took most today, most of which were poor. Then Astrit took one and we had a decent chance from it.
He took the one Jacko scored from if I remember correctly too.
  • Claus Jensen, one of our best dead-ball players, disappointed far too often from corners for someone of his ability.
  • I remember last year sometime (or may have been our champions year) our corners were really dangerous, both jacko from one side and stephens/green from the other would whip them in at pace close to the keeper. Used to cause all sorts of problems, don't look dangerous any more.
  • Trouble is with Yann in there we were dangerous. We ain't got that Ariel threat now.

Yep. That used to be one part of our play over the previous two seasons that I was really proud of. It's gone missing since last summer though.

Didn't we go close from a few corners against Huddersfield?
  • Yep, both Rezza and Morrison with good chances and should have scored v Huddersfield
  • Went close but still didn't score

Ariel would be a threat. He has quick movement, especially when things gets snappy.

  • Haven't had a decent corner taker since Colin Powell. Even Kinsella's powder puff corners were useless most of the time. At least we're creating them now.
  • According to the Times Finktank article from a few months ago there is no correlation between the number of corners a team gets during a game and the outcome of the game. The roar of the croud when a corner is won is a particularly British phenomena, it doesn't happen on the continent. So good or bad corners appear to make no difference. The article when on to say that there is a correlation to match winning with the number of throw ins a team has in the attacking part of the pitch.

... And he used to cheat whenever possible :)
  • I mention this in the Huddersfield's post match tread. Jackson all the corners from our left wing, thus they were all out swingers, we need to mix it about and throw some in swingers in as well.

Don't be reading my comment above about swingers out loud then.
  • I remember from the Selhurst days a couple of blokes used to sing "we never score from a corner".

  • We created 3 great chances from Jackson corners against Huddlesfield, the fact they weren't taken is down to the 3 players missing them not the quality of the corners. Having said that, he disappointed in his delivery yesterday.

I'm not saying that the quality is poor, I'm saying that defenders will know what to expect if you repeating the same thing and therefore it's that bit easier for them.

I agree, pretty much every corner followed the same routine and was easy enough to predict and prepare for. At least with the free kicks yesterday we had three or four player all trying different approaches. Admittedly, they were pretty poor mostly but there was a bit of imagination... something we'll need a bit more of I fear!
  • Danny Green should play, and take every corner, because we will at least know he is trying to score from them.
  • Irritates the life out of me that professional footballers can't clear the first defender.

    This.

Or an Andy Peake free kick!
  • I doubt if Riga has had time to put in new corner routines. He's still trying to work out who can do what in general terms, which is a problem with a new appointment at this stage of the season. I believe CP left the set plays to Dyer, which probably won't change in the short term. I'd like to see more blocks to allow players to get free headers, but that takes time to organise. The new manager will need time on the training ground, which he hasn't got. It will be Game - Recovery ( Sun) - Light session (Mon) - next game (Tues), at present. The existing set plays will have to do.

Even I could take decent corners when I played for my Sunday League side.

There is no reason why a professional player cannot kick the ball high enough to reach the middle of the box. It's simple.
