  • Very good player, a shame that footballers have no loyalty or sense of appreciation towards the club that make them anymore. One thing is for sure RD won't make the same mistake again, if a player is good enough for the first team at that age he will be tied down to a lengthy contract before he kicks a ball.
  • Sorry that Poyet has decided his future lies elsewhere. However, for what it is worth, he is not the best young player that I have seen at the club. In my opinion, Lee Bowyer was a more complete player at the same age. Bowyer was a regular goal scorer, he had that rare quality of being able to be in the right place at the right time. He also liked a tackle which, admittedly, would get him the odd yellow or red card.
He was a greater loss to the club than Poyet will be. However, Bowyer never fulfilled his true potential. Moving to Leeds at a time when they were spending money they didn't have was the worse thing he could have done. Onwards and, hopefully, upwards.
  • not sure I understand the people saying he is too good for us. That would suggest that we don't want to improve. isn't our aim to, over time, improve the quality of the team, whether by buying better players or by developing youth players. DP would have done that, but has chosen to go. Had he decided to stay, we wouldn't have said he is too good to play and left in on the bench.

In Poyet's case, he looks a good player in the half season we saw him, but a long way from a top player at the moment. He did some really good things, and had a couple of games when he was less good. We have all seen players who sparkle for a period then disappear. Poyet may be one of those types of player, or may go on to great things.

As for us, players come and players go. It isn't the end of the world. I am now looking for who the next player is to come in, who may or may not be better than Poyet.

Purely in business terms, you could argue that he played a significant part in us staying up last year, so we got our investment back on him by not being relegated. i wish him well for the future, after that I am not overly concerned.

Very dissappointed. Feel it's just as a big a loss for him as it is for us. I don't believe all the 'he's a confident lad so fancies himself at a prem club.' If this was the case he woudn't be rushing into a deal at 19 but having another top season in the championship and getting himself a better move.

He would have been playing under an owner who openly talks on how he likes to play youth so another season as the star man in a championship club was only going to further his career.

I just fear he'll jump at whatever club offers him most money and we will see another wasted English talent.

Well he clearly isn't rushing into anything, hence why he was waited until now to make a decision on Charlton and he still hasn't signed for anyone else.

Think some people get this idea that the Premiership is just Chelsea, Arsenal, United etc. Is is likely that Poyet is destined to "rot" at clubs like Hull, Stoke, Burnley? - All Premier League clubs that would be a huge step up from where we are right now.
Moving onto a premier league club after 20 games is a rush in my opinion. I just feel no move to a premier league team is a good move unless he is playing first team football which i doubt.

I would love nothing more than to see him do well, just feel young players move at the first sniff of the prem when the majority of these moves stunt their career rather than help it develop.

I look at the likes of Tom Ince and Will Hughes who have bee helped with a few seasons in the championship and probably have a much stronger idea of the direction they're going in than Poyet after 20 games

But Bowyer is a bit old now, mate...
  • That's a seriously loaded statement from the club. Understandable I guess. Hope this news doesn't dampen the recent positivity. COYRs.

  • Not too fussed, Buyens is a natural replacement and more proven. Just hope that financially we can benefit.
  • Looking at Diego's recent Twitter activity, it is pretty clear he has been supporting Uruguay, not England, in the World Cup - so don't expect to see him in a Three Lions shirt in future, either! A bit quiet on the Suarez incident, mind you...

I haven't really got much to add, much have been said. But I'm really disappointed with the outcome. It was a tough situation for all involved, and I guess the most fault lies with Tony and Michael. Hopefully we can all move on now, bad situations from the former ownership begins to disappear (the mistakes in contracts, the field and so on). I don't want this to overshadow the good feeling from the last few weeks, I still believe we'll put together a decent team.

As for Diego, I feel the best decision would have been to stay and play a lot of games here next season, he's still got a lot of growth to do, plus, it would be fantastic for the fans and the club. I'm curious to what he'll expect from his new club, I hope he'll succeed, but it's sad to see an academy player leave so soon, and in such a way. Diego doesn't deserve the harsh comments, but we didn't deserve an outcome like this either.
  • truly, is buyens a slot-in replacement, style-wise?
  • I don't believe he has gone for more money and I do believe he has gone for footballing reasons. That said I'm still allowed to be bitter and pissed off. He played half a season after years of loyalty and support from the club and now thinks he is too big for us. The least he could've/should've done was sign a contract with some sort of buyout clause of say £5m.

I'm not saying I hope he tears his Anterior Cruciate Ligament tomorrow whilst walking to Waitrose which prevents him from signing for anyone else, but if he does it will teach him a valuable lesson about loyalty.

And put off anyone from wanting to sign him when they have already stock piled god knows how many youngsters in their academies from all over the world. Yes, that would make sense for him wouldn't it.
  • I think that makes my comments look a little less 'guff' now.

His father says there is a very good chance he'll stay to a Charlton fan on the 24th June and on the 25th June the club announce that he has declined to return to preseason training with us as he's looking to explore his options elsewhere. Even if the club posted that as soon as they heard from him it's the next day. If the club took a day or two to announce his departure while they told us about Morrison and Igor then it is possible (and not at all unlikely) that'd he'd already told the club he was leaving while Gus was telling PaulSturgess that there's a good chance he will stay.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't feel silly about any of my posts now.

I never believed he'd stay. I believe he'd decided to go elsewhere before the end of the season. I don't blame the player for leaving but I don't think I will be able to believe what he, or his father, gives us as the reason for his departure. Those of you that want to continue to lay this at the door of RD by assuming that he left because Powell was sacked feel free, but I'll never believe that.

Sorry KHA, I didn't make myself clear. What I thought was "guff", was the below. Not whether Poyet may leave.

"No disrespect, but if a 18 year old player's feelings have to be considered when changing a manager (especially when we are bottom of the league and on a run of 3 points from the last 6 league games) then we might as well give up now.

Did you think to ask Gus how he would feel if his job security was to be determined by a 18 year old that had started a total of 4 league games?"
  • I have watched Diego from a very early age.

I have been signing his praises for a number of years, and you could tell he was an excellent footballer, as he was always playing at least 1 age group higher than his actual age.

I once, on a blog, described him as 'a Rolls Royce of a player, with the heart of a mud-plugging Land Rover'.

However, I still believe Cousins is the better all round player. He is physically more powerful, probably quicker, has a better range of passes (even if his accuracy may not be as good), and is far more likely to score a goal.

Also, if you really watch him play, Cousins is more vocal, and more tactically astute. He is a future captain.

So, at the end of this missive, I have only 2 things to add.

Good luck Diego, and watch Jordan go this season.

Am a fan of Cousins but you have to be blind to think he is a better footballer than Poyet.
  • Wanted him to stay for obvious reasons. Bit pissed off he's decided to show no loyalty whatsoever. I realise he has done nothing wrong and exercised his rights so perhaps my feelings are wrong but I don't wish him at this moment any particular success. We will survive without you Diego. A bitter and reluctant good riddance.

Apparently so: a defensive midfielder. Our agent in Belgium, who posts as 'byl', says Buyens is fairly solid but doesn't pull up any trees.

I really will shut up after this, but "Wish the club all the best!" - who on earth does he think he is kidding???
  • Good luck Diego. Gutted, but when he did'nt sign earlier, I thought this was in the wind. Not the first decent player we've lost, and won't be the last. Now let's get our 400k for him. ;-)
  • He is only where he is today because we put him there. No loyalty at all. He must have gone for the money...

I bet his old man had something to do with it for sure... Glad he has gone now anyway and not halfway through the season. Gives us a chance to find someone else.....

I'll be booing him if he ever returns to the valley!
  • But then again I do question the person who is doing the negotiations! how much experience does she have??
  • Only positive i can take is that hopefully it will mean cousins doesnt play on the right wing anymore

Not surprised at all but still disappointed. Every has already been said really. I can understand both points of view.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up and how he does.

On blaming the previous owners, can we be sure that he didn't turn down a longer deal when he first signed pro? Maybe he always wanted to keep his options open. Would be unusual but he may have been very confident of his own ability.

What a shame. It is a pity he didn't follow the lead of Shelvey & Jenkinson, who both signed a contract, in order that Charlton would receive a transfer fee.
I can't say I'm surprised, he did seem a little aloof at the POTY "do" & Gus Poyet has already told us, that the Uruguyan attitude, is to win at all cost, in other words, look after number one and have no consideration for others.
Anyway, it is what it is & we move on.
