Standard Liege

So. How important are they in RDs experiment and CAFC's future?

Should we want the horrible older sibling to fail and implode so we get more of daddy's attention?

or would that mean the whole experiment is over and CAFC will be in trouble?

but that could mean being sold to a football man as a stand alone Charlton again.

Or do we want them to beat all before them on their way to champions league glory so the loanees and youngsters CAFC get are better, and better youngsters are attracted to the stable?

Or doesnt it matter one iota?

  • We could probably do with RD selling SL. They are not worth ten times what he paid, but he has asked for about twice what he paid (40 million euros, as opposed to the twenty it cost him). If that happened (and he has said to fans that it will if he gets the right offer), then we would be his primary team and all efforts would go toward making us the cash cow (at least until he bought someone else).
  • That sounds about right actually. As I said before, RD is a businessman, not a football man. If he won't sell SL for less than twice what he paid, then I imagine CAFC will get the same treatment, and the only way CAFC are going to get to be worth £30m is if they look like they're heading to the PL - I imagine once the club is in the PL it will be worth far more than £30m thanks to the TV rights and the fact we are relatively debt-free compared to other clubs (or so I gather). Or we'll become so bad that RD decides to cut his losses and sell us to a fake sheik.

    Yawn
  • Our future should not be reliant on another football club.

    Spot on.

Roland will say in a weeks time that we are not a feeder club.

This is our club. Fk em.

Sorry IAgree bit of a long message for you to follow there.

The money from that is lots more than a brief CL appearance and winning the Belgian league.

If you strip assets from a team (as the owner has already stated regarding our best youngsters) reaching the premiership will never happen.

He wants the club to break even. The only real way to do that is through players wages.
  • Can't see the club breaking even if it is clear that we have no plans to get into the Prem. The stadium barely gets half full as it is and fans aren't going to wait for a promotion push that will never happen.

Hence why we will always be playing second fiddle to SL in Roland's network.

Like most things Charlton at the moment, its all rumours though.

He's a businessman, no businessman aims to break even. He wants a profit, the only way to get a profit is to shoot for the Prem.

Unfortunately we could completely lose our identity as a consequence.

I personally believe that RD knows he will have to pay £4m if we avoid releagation so he isn't too bothered about us getting relegated because I would guess he is very confident of being able to get us promoted straight away with SL's reserves, players whos wages he is paying anyway, a gamble which could pay off.

Once we get back into the champ I think it is logical that we could then see a push for the prem, and in a fair few years time, being his biggest team.

I think that he probably, as a businessman, views Charlton as his capture with the highest possible payoff yet...

We'd have more chance of not winning a game in the league all season than we would hitting a play off spot, this guy and his network know nothing of the league and anyone who does and goes against his army regime, is therefore, sacked.

Fairy muff. I respect that, the reason I laughed at your 'rumour' is because it is totally unrealistic at this time. A bit like saying Leicester are aiming for a Europa League spot next season. With someone who is changing the current so fast, you cannot read what he is going to do in the future. I hope to see you right, but can't imagine him spending more than he is getting in, going by the way he runs his businesses.

The general mood is is that RD is a businessman first and a football man second. Standard Liege must be worth ten times more than they were when he first bought them and their potential value could still grow. They are virtually guaranteed trophies and a CL place every season, a pretty attrative prospect. I imagine he will want to sell the team within the next 3-5 years, making CAFC the biggest team in his pool. His talk of sending CL-quality players to SL from CAFC may suggest that he wants to use CAFC to feed SL, but lets be honest, how often does a CL-quality player walk out of our academy, and how much more are they worth selling to a Prem team than sending to SL? If RD plans on winning the CL using a feeder club's talent, CAFC isn't exactly the pragmatic choice.

The theory I like best is that CAFC are the key to unlocking the treasure chest that is the PL's TV money at the lowest cost. We have a better stadium than half of the teams in PL, we can fill it when necessary (we nearly sell out whenever it's Football-for-a-fiver) and we have a big dormant fanbase that would come back if only they were guaranteed quality footie week in week out. We've also got a decent academy and generally don't attract trouble or controversy. Lets be honest, if we had the budgets of the likes of Leicester, we could have held onto the players we have had to let go over the past couple of years and made a real stab at promotion; last year was proof of that.

So it is in our best interests that SL do well - the better players they have, the better players we get loaned/given. And the better they do, the higher their value will become, making it more likely RD will sell and inject part of the proceeds into CAFC.

As a little addendum to this interesting piece.

It must be remembered that the Belgium top league is considered quite weak in Europe and as such the winners of said league do NOT atomatically qualify for the champions league, but must like many other leagues in Europe go through qualification.

The hope that i cling to is the bloke owns a decent sized football club, in the capital, with an already built stadium, that with the right investment (it doesn't need millions thrown at it) could play Prem football within 2 seasons. The financial reward for that would easily surpass that of SL. He would then reap the rewards, or as a business man, could sell the club for a significant profit.

I don't think any money has been thrown at the club yet, because he hasn't had the man in charge that he wants. If we stay up and don't see any investment over then summer, then i will begin to worry.

I don't know about the doesn't need millions, or the 2 seasons bit. There are two or three our players currently good enough to play a part in a mount to the play off challenge in the ever improving Championship.. These are also essentially are assets, funnily enough, of which the man that owns us said he will sell to balance the books. It all just doesn't add up for us to be at the forefront of his thoughts regarding promotion, it's the hardest league to get out of in the world in my eyes. No 2nd tier is quite like it in the world, we have scored the least goals in the entire FL, can't see us staying up this season let alone then magically turning into world beaters during the off-season!

Gary can you not see my point that it is slightly worrying times for the club when different things are being said by the owner?

You have a bbc interview with SL sporting director who says they will take cafc best young players to give them experiance abroad... Coupled with this is the acrimonious departure of a manager who was sacked for not being the yes man.

For me personally it's blatantly obvious that in Roland's network we are playing second fiddle.

Ive heard from a couple of people that if we stay up, next season will see considerable investment and a play-off push.

Like most things Charlton at the moment, its all rumours though.
    Hahahaha.

And i've heard that if we stay up next season we are aiming to win the Championship, with a goal in 2016/2017 to get a Europa League spot.
Get real. Look at our squad and look at the experience the people RD is getting in. We'd have more chance of not winning a game in the league all season than we would hitting a play off spot, this guy and his network know nothing of the league and anyone who does and goes against his army regime, is therefore, sacked.
don't talk to me like a c**t, just passing on what I've been told.
By whom? Anyone with a credible source, one contact within the network? I'm all ears as I want our club to do well.. feed me something that may give me optimism
ones someone on here that tells me the team before its even been released, so its a creditable source.

perhaps the staff are being fed the same bullshit that CP was. My post above even says like most things CAFC its all rumours.

im firmly in the waiting and see camp, so I'm not writing off RD until then.

Id do see your point, but my point is that this has the potential to change.
How can you see this change happening?

As you stated earlier the only way his prioties would ever change is if we achieved promotion. Which is highly unlikely given the fact he's sending us SL reserves.
Im not RD, like you, i don't know what his full intentions are. Its all speculation and plenty of it.

First thing is to stay up, and with a new man with fresh ideas it might happen. Then in the summer we'll see who goes/comes in, then ill make a further assessment. Until then, who knows. Cant say enough times how much I'm sitting on the fence with all this.
