If we lose at home tomorrow, what will the reaction be?

  • I think it may well be his fault, even tomorrow, if he simply plays all the new players come what may, and we then lose. However tomorrow has not arrived yet and we have to wait and see.

But Seth, we played without all the new players and still lost, and miserably at that.
  • Well if we play the new players and win that will be a start won't it? If we win that will also be a start. If we win it might herald an even brighter future for Standard Liege, I am far from convinced that a win will mean a bright future for Charlton Athletic though.
  • Me neither Seth, but you don't judge anyone on two games. Plus, much as I love CP, he was manager of the bottom club. My gut feeling is he should have walked after the Yann/Stephens thing. He stayed and tried to steer us to safety, the results, QPR apart, were dire, and RD sacked him. It would have been nice if he'd been given some decent players in january, but we're in march now.
I repeat, while I can see various points of view here, I see no reason to jump on the new guys back and start issuing ultimatums. Rome was'nt burnt in a day!ª

How would you define 'a chance'?
For me I will give him 'a chance' to win tomorrow and at Millwall, then we can pause briefly for breath.
if Jose Riga fails to seize his 'chance' to win tomorrow and at Millwall then he deserves anything that comes his way, if we get less than six points it will be his fault.

I think you've lost it mate. Take it out on RD if it makes you happy, as the treatment handed out to CP was crap. But all this 'he's got two games to show he's as good as he thinks he is'? Where are you getting this from. RD offered him a job at our club and he said yes. Why the loathing?
Do you want to change manager again in three matches time because he failed to meet your yard stick? That will hardly help the club. Take a deep breath, the rest of the season starts today, and we've got a new manager.

I am getting it from the club statement regarding changing the manager because of crucial games coming up, and that the change is to avoid relegation.
I am also assuming that a change of manager is supposed to be an improvement.
You are right actually, because if Roland has appointed a crap manager he is the one deserving of the loathing, not Riga. Riga was probably offered the job on good money and has taken it, and yes the rest of the season starts now. Indeed I have said elsewhere that if Riga keeps us up given the circumstances of his arrival he will have done well.
My yardstick is also (as I have written elsewhere) about how much he may fight our corner in the future, as opposed to being subservient to Standard Liege. I don't think there is any credibility yet that he cares much for Charlton Athletic, and I do think there is credibility in the idea that he will be Rolands yes man at the expense of Charlton Athletic, and to the benefit of Standard Liege.
However I reckon you may have touched on something when you say I have lost it, it remains to be seen what exactly that 'it' is.

  • My reaction? So what.
  • Time for bed, see you all tomorrow!
  • Seth - having met you briefly outside the valley recently, your passion for Charlton and support for Chris Powell were obvious. It is therefor unsurprising to me that your post's reflect your anger at the way Chris Powell has been treated.
My support and admiration for the work and commitment by Chris Powell has never diminished during the time he managed our club. I wish he could have stayed and taken us back to the prem. Some of the criticism on here at times has been laughable but posters are entitled to voice their opinions.
However, something needed to change if we are to stand a chance of avoiding relegation. Sunday and recent poor performances underline just how weak our squad of footballers is. It would have been difficult with Yann and Stephens to survive this league, almost impossible without them.
We appear unable, for whatever reason to secure loan signings - so something has to change.
In my opinion sacking Chris Powell will probably (but not certainly) condemn us to league one but maybe, just maybe a change of coaching/personnel could bring a change in luck or whatever it needs to avoid relegation.
The next few weeks will reveal much about our new regime.
Never a dull moment supporting Charlton.
    Keep the faith Seth.

John it was a pleasure to meet you, and you are every bit as passionate as I am.
I want us to avoid relegation, but I also think then what? We look to be the reserve team for Standard Liege whatever division we end up in.
I also know in my heart of hearts something had to change, but I held on to the hope that Chris Powell could be reconciled to the new circumstances, that was the change I expected, agreement and moving forward. I wanted a synergy of the best of what we have with the best that Roland could deliver.
Whatever we have, or had, seems to count for nothing because we are now plunged into a footballing and business experiment for the greater good of Standard Liege whilst we get the crumbs from their table.
It feels far from dull agreed, but it is very hard to keep the faith when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel.
For my sins I know I will renew, what else is there for me after so many years following the club? But I also hate myself for doing so, knowing that Roland is exploiting my loyalty for the benefit of Standard Liege. I am addicted, and suffering because of it.

  • Well I see a reason for getting on his back from the off. Powell had barely driven from the ground before this guy was installed as manager. You think that was agreed in a matter of hours?

We'll know all we'll need to know about this guy tomorrow if he plays Thuram.
