Roland was always going to bring someone in from abroad, that most of us would never ever heard of, if Powell would not go along with his ideas.
Riga has come in and he could be the new Lennie, or the new Les Reed. Time will tell, but having a go at the fella before we have seen his ideas is idiotic. Give him a chance and judge him at the end of the season.
Personally I think he has his hands tied like Powell did, but maybe we will see better tactical play with the players he has at his disposal.
You mention that we should judge him at the end of the season.
This is from the club statement:
“However, given the club’s position in the league and the number of important fixtures upcoming, I felt this difficult decision was unavoidable at this time.
“We will look to quickly appoint a replacement who we feel will give us the best chance of avoiding relegation from the Championship."
I take the 'number of important fixtures upcoming' to mean tomorrow against Huddersfield Town, and Saturday against relegation and local rivals Millwall. So it seems the club have appointed him now in order to deliver straight away.
The statement also heavily implies that Jose Riga has been appointed to 'avoid relegation'.
At least two stages of 'judgement' lined up there, right now, and at the end of the season.
Maybe he's here until May and another new face will then take over

I will certainly not support him because I am loyal to Charlton, he will have to prove himself every moment of every day otherwise I will be heaping the vitriol on him at every match I attend and at every opportunity. OK Roland, first challenge starting tomorrow is to win every remaining match this season, and even then you're still the carpetbagger who has foreclosed the farm, and is standing there grinning and chewing your cigar whilst our sad belongings are loaded up on a cart. Nice to meet you Jose Riga, just want to start off by saying I don't know you, but I hate you. Flag Quote · 4Like 5LOL
You complete idiot. Go support someone else please, we don't need wimpy fans at a time of need.
I take it you mean me? Well tomorrow I will be watching someone else, Standard Liege Reserves, so your wish is granted.
You are an idiot and a creep. You sound like a jilted lover. You have no respect for Cafc I'm afraid. It was you also who insinuated that some Cafc fans were racist towards Powell. You need help .
Wow what a day, I was pretty gutted and angry this morning when I heard Chris Powell had gone.
But to be honest , when I calmed down , I kinda expected it, it seems to be commonplace in football that new owners always bring in their own management team , and it was only a question of time before Chris was replaced, the fact RD has got a way of running clubs is a separate debate.
The fact a new contract hadn't been signed straight away , a distinct lack of transfer funds in the January transfer window, the cancelled Bromley meeting, lol, all these things added up to where we are today.
Chris Powell will find another job, he'll be we'll backed, and probably do really well, and 2 years down the line , people will say why on earth did Charlton let Chris Powell go?
And do you know what, I wouldn't begrudge him any of it, because how he's managed to put up with the previous clowns running the show, and not being sufficiently backed in numerous transfer windows , and not walked away sooner I don't know.
I wanted to take my Millwall tickets back when I heard this news, I know we are bottom, the football has been pretty naff recently , and at times I question my own sanity, why I bother going back to suffer continual punishment , but I wanted Powell to get us out of this mess.
Other people in the footballing world know full well what is going on with our club, how crap how pitch has been , and how Powell has been shafted by this and the last regime.
Having a season ticket renewal come through the door is a sick joke, who ever came up with this one needs shooting.
But and it's a big butt, we have got to support the club, we are in a relegation battle, and need to get points on the board , so please get your arses down to the valley tomorrow and get behind the team.
Give the new fella some slack, this was always going to be a tough game coming after the FA cup match , whoever was going to be in charge.
If we can make a racket tomorrow night, maybe just maybe we can nick a win , and get closer to Millwall.
Why is it that those who do not like what this new coach represents at 'our' club are being accused of not being 100% Charlton. Particularly annoying to those of us who were behind CP think it all stinks and the new guy has to earn my support. He has more to do than most as the way things have developed today are disappointing as usual and he is part of that.

I take it you still mean me? You might be right about the idiot and the creep thing, but if you want to check out what I actually said (which at no point said some CAFC fans were racist towards Powell...but you would have to read the whole thread to understand the point made then...and then you can return and quote specifics), you will find you are wrong. Anyway thanks for the adjectives, 'wimpy', 'idiot', 'creep', and the opinions, and indeed the 'you need help' advice. I accept those gifts in the spirit in which they were offered.
As others have said we can't blame Riga for Powell leaving. I will support Riga because he is the new manager of the club i love. Yes i am still gutted that Powell has gone but at the end of the day i want Charlton to stay up and progress. Yes i would have liked that to have been with Powell but thats not going to happen now.
Riga is now in charge and i hope he can motivate the players to start winning. I will be very interested tomorrow evening, sadly i can't make it. Not because i am boycotting it, but i just can't make it.
We need to get behind the players and the new manager. Doesn't mean we are showing disloyalty to Powell. Powell i am sure will wish the players and the fans well for the future.... ok maybe not RD.
Whatever the circumstances of his arrival, I wish him luck.
In terms of tomorrow, think he is in a bit of a no lose situation - it will be a bit harsh to blame him after one day, and if we manage a win he will no doubt be hailed an instant hero.
We can also at least hope for a bit of 'bounce' in results in future games that seems to often come with the arrival of new managers head coaches.
At least he will know his place in the hierarchy.
It will certainly be interesting to see at which point, if any, we see a change in our first choice keeper and right back etc.
Never heard of him, but my starting position is that he is an utterly useless 'see you next tuesday', and it will remain so unless he can persuade me inch by inch moment by moment otherwise. Seth, you say you're loyal to Charlton but won't support the new guy.. Isn't that a contradiction? It's not his fault and he should be given a chance. Today has been a shock but, we are bottom with the fewest goals... It was a day that was always coming.
Seth is supporting the new guy like you and your cronies on the forum that must not be named supported Chris Powell.
You all say you're loyal to Charlton but never supported Chris Powell.
I won't write it up word for word, but in essence it says that if a player isn't good enough for Standard Liege he will play for Charlton, and if Charlton have a good player he will play for Standard Liege. If anybody needs confirmation that we are effectively Standard liege reserves from now on, then the evidence is there. Don't take my word for it, try to watch it if you can.

You're welcome Seth Plum. Now leave off dissing Cafc and our staff no matter who they are. Let fans of opposing clubs do it should they find the urge.
Jose "Roland I've picked the team you wanted is there anything else you need doing?"
Roland "Can you and the chino kid come and wipe my arse and tell me how amazing I am please".
Jose "yes Roland, yes....Yes Roland of course.. I'll get the extra soft right away."
A lot of people seem to be asserting that Duchatelet was telling Chris Powell who to play. Do we know that's what has been going on? Clearly, they had football related disagreements, but there are many other issues that could have involved. It would be interesting to know what Powell wanted and where Duchatelet drew a line in the sand.
Have a contact at the club who has just got off the phone with him, CP says the sacking was because he didn't play the network players ...
im excited by this appointment but was gutted this morning! i feel for chrissy he has been treated badly! but we move on chrissy will and have great success elsewhere

Millwall is where the rest of the season begins.
Or maybe he could do a Les Reed....Only time will tell i guess.
Even a Les Dawson would do me at the moment...

So yes basically Mundell.
This is all just draining my emotions!
