As a rule, I don't post on threads without reading everything that's been written on them, but I'm doing so today, as it's just too depressing to trawl through it all.
I genuinely believed we would stay up this season, but now I'm fairly sure we'll go down. With 16 games remaining, I don't see how a head coach with no experience of English football (and probably little knowledge of our players) is going to pull us out of a tight Championship relegation fight. I'm not convinced that the players will have sufficient time to adapt effectively to new methods and ideas, and I'm fairly certain that morale will have taken a serious hit among a group of tight-knit players who were fiercely loyal to their previous manager.
My season ticket renewal form arrived today, which seems like a sick joke. Of course, I will renew for next season, and I'll be at The Valley tomorrow cheering on my team. I support Charlton, not any one manager or any one player. It's just a shame that Charlton feels a little less Charlton this evening.
Totally agree with your post Gillis. Chris Powell took a large lump of Charlton with him as he drove away from the training ground today.
We've got a new manager, whether you call him Head Coach or not.
He has experience of getting teams promoted, has managed Standard Liege and was brought to AC Milan for his innovative coaching methods. He guested as coach for Real Madrid and has worked for the Belgian national team setup. The idea that he's some sort of puppet is risible.
We shouldn't let our love and respect for Chris Powell stop us from getting behind a new gaffer who does not exactly come without credentials.

If you sack one manager because he won't play the players you tell him to and then bring in another, it is far from 'risible' to assume that the new guy will be more of a 'yes man' and therefore effectively 'some sort of puppet' - which is also what a former Liege 'coach' said Duchatelet wants.
Now this has nothing to do with Powell being sacked, although that hurts. This is to do with professional courtesy.
Chris Powell hadn't even been sacked by the time Jose had accepted his new job. He was only just leaving the building as Jose arrived. Clearly Jose was aware of what was happening because he was unlikely to have just been visiting the O2 for the weekend when his old buddy Roland called him up.
I understand the fans that want to welcome him to the club because they want what is best for the club, as do I, but in my opinion this man isn't it. His greatest skill seems to be name dropping.
I don't believe he is the right man for the job because he clearly doesn't have a decent bone in his body. I'm sure he is a perfectly nice person away from the club but he is not a decent professional. And for that matter, neither is his mate deux chalets. Neither of them deserve to be linked with our club and the sooner we see the back of them the better. We may have been saved from administration, but in doing so we allowed another evil to enter our club and it is entirely possible he could be worse.
I remember the uproar when Spurs agreed to replace Martin Jol mid game. That was completely wrong and it came back to bite them with the horror of the Ramos period at spurs. The same will happen here. What has happened here is just as wrong.
And so, while people are calling for us to get behind our players and new manager I cannot agree with them because in all good conscience I can't get behind a man who would stab a fellow professional in the back as Jose and Roland have.
I honestly hope we avoid relegation. I hope the players pull together and we get through this dark period. But I will not welcome, nor cheer on, a man I do not consider decent.
I will cheer on those players who appear to care about our club, but Jose?
Jose you can f--- off, and take your frite loving puppet master with you.
José Riga clearly no more than a puppet for the Belgian, someone for the fans to shout at and to take the heat. I wonder what reception he will get as he walks out to take Chris' place in the dugout tomorrow?
what do you think we should do? boo him? throw rotten eggs at him? invade the pitch and put his lights out? Jesus. We should give him our wholehearted support. He is now our Manager. Whatever the circumstances I'm sure he wants to be a success. He didn't sack CP. Get behind him. If you can't then perhaps you should stay at home.
100% this. Get behind the team and new manager. I would go further and say to those that don't want to support CAFC 100% - we are better off without you.
while he is nobodys first choice, he has to be supported not pilloried, the team are in a desperate position and surely Powell's dismissal came as no surprise especially after Sunday's gutless performance. Results, team selections and performances have been generally poor this season and whilst we all accept Powell was under resourced ,he has not made the best of what little we have and regrettably had to go. He is a fine man and I wish him well but the change had to be made. Lets see what the new man can do
Never heard of him, but my starting position is that he is an utterly useless 'see you next tuesday', and it will remain so unless he can persuade me inch by inch moment by moment otherwise. I will certainly not support him because I am loyal to Charlton, he will have to prove himself every moment of every day otherwise I will be heaping the vitriol on him at every match I attend and at every opportunity. OK Roland, first challenge starting tomorrow is to win every remaining match this season, and even then you're still the carpetbagger who has foreclosed the farm, and is standing there grinning and chewing your cigar whilst our sad belongings are loaded up on a cart. Nice to meet you Jose Riga, just want to start off by saying I don't know you, but I hate you.
Seth, you say you're loyal to Charlton but won't support the new guy.. Isn't that a contradiction? It's not his fault and he should be given a chance. Today has been a shock but, we are bottom with the fewest goals... It was a day that was always coming.

Except you don't know that was why Powell was sacked. We were also bottom of the league having lost a number of key games.
Don't get me wrong, I'm gutted to lose CP. I love the guy as much as anyone does, but Jose Riga didn't sack him.
Really pissing me off people calling him a yes man or puppet.

I've not read the thread...but didn't RD sack this new manager from SL? If so why now bring him here? Doesn't add up to me, but the stranger things have happened is football I suppose.
Bleedin hell - It is not this new guy's fault is it.
Give him a chance FFS. What we had going on wasn't working. Something was very wrong. The club is owned by RD and he can do what he likes. And no, supporters don't own the club.
I would have happily seen a successful Powell stay for ever. Success wasn't coming, let alone league survival, and he couldn't work with his new boss. Same boss who likely saved us from Admin.
If TJ and MS had sacked him it would have been the same "Woe is me" approach from people.
Powell didn't do a good job in this division, most definitely not in the last 25 games.

Didnt notice this mentioned anywhere but welcome Jose Riga and Good luck (You'll need it) you've already gone down in Charlton History as our first foreign manager

You complete idiot. Go support someone else please, we don't need wimpy fans at a time of need.

No we don't need wimpy fans who just twitter away about support the team and the next three points. We need fans like those who saved Charlton from selhurst and the last lot of businessmen with self interest at heart

If he wins match after match then I will respect the fact that he has saved Standard Liege reserves from relegation. I have said on another thread that given the circumstances of his arrival, if he keeps us up he will have achieved something, I won't argue about that. It is because I am loyal to Charlton and not Standard Liege that I say what I say. If he turns out to be a yes man puppet poodle then I won't be giving him a chance, any chance at all. The next marker on the path is at the final whistle tomorrow, and if we have lost or drawn the match as far as I am concerned he is in negative equity, and will deserve criticism. Jose Riga's first 'chance' comes tomorrow, and I don't give a damn that he only arrived today. If we don't win it will be his fault, even if the ref is astonishingly useless and favours Huddersfield Town, because Mr Riga should factor that into his calculations, otherwise he will not turn out to be the coach Standard Liege Reserves thought they were getting. Lose or draw tomorrow and Riga has blown it.

I take it you mean me? Well tomorrow I will be watching someone else, Standard Liege Reserves, so your wish is granted.

Spot on mate . Feel sorry for the bloke already he'll never be a success with the fans on he's back from the beginning .

The thing is, if he's prepared to accept having his squad / team picked for him then he will be perceived here as a yes man, even if he has decent pedigree. That doesn't stop us giving him a chance to impress, or giving his Charlton team our support.
