Gotta beat the traffic

edited April 2007 in General Charlton
Now I know we've talked about this before but how many people had left before the goal on Saturday, there wasn't too many people leaving at the end, but before half time one bloke near me left (presumably to get a beer) with 7 minutes of play left...I know cos I had to get up..

Loads appeared to be leaving soon after the goal, during the most tense part of the whole match, bizarre....

  • Don't do it myself. Partly because I would get lynched by Ketters and Carlsberg but mostly because I left early against Norwich at home circa 1997/8 and missed us clawing back a four all.

Once bitten and all that, I don't see the point in going if you're going to leave early.

As I always say sometimes. Do they do the same thing with sex?
  • Serves 'em right IMHO - do they really beat the traffic leaving 5 mins early - I doubt it...all they do is get in the way of 90min fans trying to watch the game (and applaud their side afterwards...)
  • How many late goals have they Missed ?

    Blackburn 90th Minute 1-0
    Villa 90th Minute 2-1
    Newcastle 88th Minute 2-0
    Wigan 86th Minute 1-0

I'd say if they wanna go early it's up to them, they seem to be missing a few goals though ! :-)
  • I always leave during stoppage time. Blackburn was the only one of those that I missed. Made that walk up the hill a lot easier mind!
  • I've had enough of people banging on about this, I am going to write a very passionate...oh hold on, is that the time? - must dash, traffic, you know how it is...

Did you remember you flask on Saturday Sco ?

They don't call me Flask Gordon for nothing mate. Tad miffed I forgot my blanket though.
  • I left early on Sat to beat the traffic, as we were staying with relatives just outside Birmingham. Marvellous it was too - we got quickly onto the lower road, through the tunnel and hit the M11 by 5.30.

Now, before you all yell at me, when I say 'leave early', I mean leave our seats at the final whistle, and clap the team while making our way out, not waiting till all the players have left the pitch, which is what we'd normally do after such a crucial victory...
  • If you want to leave early then leave early - it's (still) a free country. I do wonder about some of the people who do it regularly every game, but surely that#s up to them isn't it?

I left the Watford match at half time, but nobody was more pleased than me when we pulled it back (particualrly as by then I'd found a pub that was showing it live!) But that was my choice and I'm more than happy to live by the decision I made. It doesn't make me any less of a fan.
  • do you sit on the end of a row?

    Me?
At the Watford game I was in the back row, so got out easilly by walking along the gangway at the back.

At home games I'm about 5 from the end, but tend not to leave these early. Why?
  • Because it's a pain in the backside when people leave early and you sit on the end!

I sit on the end- and i'm on my feet pretty much constantly from about 5 mins before half time to about 5 mins into the 2nd half and same again at the end of the match

hehe yeah, be good if we could segregate those who wanna stand/sit and those who wanna piss/drink/leave early to sit near end of the rows. :-)

i sit in the middle of a row, and if i'm late back to my seat after half time, i get so many evil looks. halfway through last season the bloke said to me, half joking, to get back a bit early. so now, i make the effort, but go in the other way, as he scares me!

there isn't time to go to the loo and get a drink at half time, if i want to get back to my seat before the game kicks off. i'm literally slap bang in the middle of the block. a bloke in front of me is always late back, and the whole row have tos tand up for him. i'd find it embarrassing personally annoying all those people and getting in people's way and having people tutting at me.

wasn't having a pop off_it, just interested. but understand it must be annoying to have to get up to let people out all the time.

personally i couldn't imagine leaving any game early, win or lose, i've paid for it, its like walking out of the film early.
  • why is it annoying, you cant expect, out of 27000 people, not to have to get up and move for someone! its no big deal is it! I had to sit in crap seats in the f block and i was always gettin up to let peopel in and out, i never tutted! people who tut and splutter need to sort out there anger! All you have to do is stand up for one second!
  • I don't get angry, just frustrated. There's a group of about 6-8 who always leave/ come and go during the match. But do they do it in a group- no way! They even asked us to pass a burger down to a boy in their group who remained in his seat whilst they watched the match on the tv just so they could knock a couple more beers back before half time. I've never tutted though- mind you he's a bit bigger than Suzi!

It's sad that Suzi now feels she has to go in the otherway now :-(
  • Alternatively, remain standing, thus solving the problem.

With regard to leaving early, I very rarely stay in my seat until the final whistle, only tend to for big games (chelsea's/tottenham's etc).
I'm on the back row of our lower tier and have to walk down to pitchside to the exit. if i leave once the game has finished it can take me 10-15 minutes to get out the ground, let alone the station/car.
I tend to watch the last few minutes on the screens on the concourse, unless we're being hammered (quite often this season).
  • [cite]Posted By: Mortain[/cite]Alternatively, remain standing, thus solving the problem. quote]

Believe me i happily would, but there is a little old(ish) lady behind me who then can't see the match.

Bloody good advert for safe standing me thinks.
  • i'd stand too if i was further back, and we managed to stand for almost the last 5 mins of the match, which was great.

stood the whole of the watford game too as was in the back row.

mcs> it takes more than a second to move for people, if you have a bag, drinks etc on the floor, then its a bit of a kerfuffle. i don't moan, but then no one tries to get past me, cos i'm in the middle, but even before the game, i have to get past loads of people and they all have to stand up, breath in, pick up belongings etc. thankfully the game hasn't started.
  • I sit at end of row and it really pisses me off when I have to get up continuosly so last game of last year, during second half I got up went for a pee and re took my seat from the other end of the row so everyone had to get up.I then went straight back down and did it again.I would have carried on doin it but for the 85 year old girl who took 5 mins to get up.It did make me feel a whole lot better though to have made my point. The people around us were pissing themselves.

There's a young lad in our row who goes for a slash once each half. He's so regular, normally you can set your watch by him. Against West Ham he was obviously more nervous and got up after 15 minutes. I couldn't help myself and said in a loud voice to the amusement of those around us "he's gone early today". The lad knew I was talking about him and looked very sheepish. So did I as I didn't mean to embarrass him.

  • I don't mind getting up for people, as long as they say thanks. There's a fella and his daughter in my row who have come shuffling past at various times for the past four or five years and NEVER say thanks. I've taken to turning to the side so my back is to them if I see them coming now just so, at the very least, they have to ask me to move.

As I posted earlier, life's all about small victories!
  • Father and Son sit next to me, they always leave with 8 mins to go. Say they have always done it and it's tradition. The Son looks miffed every game.
  • I know that some people HAVE to leave early, like those coming to games with elderly parents/relatives or those like Cheeky Bandit who have to get train/coach connections but I must admit that there are quite a few people who leave early who clearly don't fall into those categories and are just looking to make a quick getaway, which I find bizarre.
Saturday at the game is supposed to be a relaxing, enjoyable time away from work and home so why would anyone cut that time shorter than they have to?
If we have had a good result, even a decent draw, I love the slow procession out of the ground with thousands of fellow Addicks chatting about the game, hearing a thousand different comments from people, "Leaburn was great today," or, from someone else five minutes later, "That f++++ng Leaburn was a liablity again!" It is all part of the experience and the occasion.
There are few things better in life than the casual stroll from the ground back to the pub with your mates with three points safely in the bag, nobodys rushing to get anywhere its just that lovely comfortable feeling in your soul that all is right in the world.
I can honestly say that the only times I have ever left early have been the games when we have been getting really dicked and I just could not bear to watch any more (Sunderland at home in 91, Southend at home in 95, Boro at home in 95, Grimsby at home in 96). The only exception to those were at Selhurst at home to Liverpool in 1990 when they did us 4-0 and I wanted to applaud them for a great performance and also in the same season at home to Spurs (lost 3-1) when I stayed to the end to watch Gazza who was unreal that day.
  • The only game I've been tempted to leave early in recent years was the Boxing Day game at Upton Park a few years ago. It was a midday kickoff, it was bloody cold and we got absolutely ripped to shreds (Kanoute wasn't it?). The bloke next to me didn't come back after half time, and only sheer bloodymindedness kept me in my seat til the final whistle.
  • I was not at the 5-0 at Upton Park but you're well justified leaving early on those type of games. I would have left early at Spurs and Arsenal this year if I had been there. Its even worse gettimg drubbed away from home because the home fans just give it to you so badly.
  • i left early at tottenham, i think that was justified though... there are a few fellas near me that get to there seats about 10 minutes in, leave for half time about 10 minutes early and the same again for the 2nd half.. whats the point in having a ticket ffs..
  • Agreed, that is rude as well as pretty dumb behaviour! What's the point of going if you are going to spend over half your time at the bar? You might as well have stayed in the boozer. Mind you, some of the Dowie/Reed performances might have driven me to similar behaviour.
  • the point is you pay your money you can do what you like. To some of us its all about the day out and having a beer with your mates. Its a massive social event. Some people ar different and have to have their eyes fixed on the game boring the pants of everyone analysing each kick... others see it as a chance to meet up with the pals a few hours ahead, have a few beers... its all part of our day having a pint during half time and having a chat with the people who dont drink down the particular pub you choose to go to on match day. Because of the poor serving facilities at the valley you have to leave AT LEAST 5 minutes before half time. we arrange it that one of our 4 goes each week to get the beers.

each to their own and all that and its gets right on my tits when listening to some of the posts above. Im glad i dont sit in the middle of the row now and have to run the gauntlet of abuse.
  • Don't worry Curb_it I think it's a pretty close split between the two scenarios you quoted, there are just as many people who have a beer before during & after football as there are not. For the ones that don't as far as I am aware some will still get some half time refreshment or go for a loo break. People who whine about getting up are obviously part of the siddarn brigade who would also try to get singing banned in the ground if they could. If you whine about getting up to let someone out you really need to get out more.
  • I tend to leave if we're 3-0 down within 65 minutes, not a great believer in seeing it to the bitter end. But people leaving tense tight games with 5 minutes to go, is just silly
