Do you miss the premier league days?

I would think most people would say yes, but Ive had conversations with fellow fans who appreciate our attendance these days consists of "real fans", as the plastics lost interest long ago.

  • I sometimes miss the Premier League days in the sense that it would be good to see the likes of Suarez / Oscar / Hazard etc... down the Valley but at the end of the day its a League where your fighting for survival nothing else, half the games are gonna be set out to ensure you dont concede a cricket score and I definitely dont miss that where as the other half of the games are set out to try and not concede against your rivals

I love the Championship at the end of the day because if you dont try and score then you (1) You cant move up the League as its so competitive and (2) You'll risk going down... clean sheets mean nothing at this level and lower, the style of Football can be just as good, the stadiums arent falling apart and your getting to see some good English talent
  • I agree with ForeverAddicted. For me, few games in the Premiership proved to be entertaining and quite often the visiting "stars" didn't seem bothered to make an effort against what they clearly regarded as inferior opposition. There were exceptions, and they live in the memory; perhps in the end that's why I would love to see our return.
Also I don't lke being surrounded by non-fans; those whose only interest is to see Premiership fottball regardless of the team playing. I also found that much of the row in front of my seat in he East Stand had been booked out to a tour operator; whilst tourists might help boost the sale of club merchandise. they added nothing to the matchdy atmospehre.

Exactly the amount of conversations I overheard near me where someone would say "I actually support , Im just here to see a prem game".
  • The relegation season and the first couple of seasons back were great in the Prem but after that it was dire football, through necessity. Each season our targets would be A cup run (failed there!), 8th -12th (Succeeded), at least one decent result against one of the top 4. No aspirations to win it and once we got to 40 points we went to sleep.

I love the championship, we could be relegated or with a run of results we could be inthe play offs. Each season we start with real aspirations of glory. Until now we have got rid of mercenaries (hopefully that will remain the case with Rolly's boys) and plastic prem fans.

If The top 10 of the Prem went off and did their own thing I would have no regrets at all.

  • My favourite time going to Charlton was when we were in the old Div 1.

The buzz of going over to Upton Park is a very fond memory. It was all I used to look forward to when I was at school.

Then when we returned to the valley, I used to love getting the bus from Woolwich (where I would meet my mates) and have a crafty under-age pint in the Horse & Groom.

The Premier league was great, but for me those days of watching Grimsby and Cambridge at home, playing poorly and still clapping the players off of the field was a very special time.
  • Of course i miss the Prem , the packed stadium every home game and some great memories , Man Utd 3-3 , Chelsea 4-2. When we were relegated i thought at least we would see more entertaining football but Charlton always seem to play safe. Out of 23 home games a season you get 4 or 5 exciting games and the rest is pretty dour. Having said that i like the Championship and desperately hope we can stay there as watching division 1 football again does'nt bear thinking about
  • Yes, what we watch now is very poor in comparision

  • Miss the Premiership?

Hmmm now let me think its been more fun ( & cheaper!) at the lower levels , Hartlepool , Exeter , etc , but when you talk to other footie fans who support a Premiership team , they know very little of what goes on outside Premiership football , but perhaps thats the case whatever division your in?

I do miss playing Arsenal , Chelsea , Spurs , Man United , even West Ham! but know if we got promoted , we'd all be moaning ( or a lot of us anyway) about the cost of tickets , which i think would be prohibitive in terms of how many games i'd go to.

Also miss having a better quality of player , playing for Charlton , people that can pass , tackle and score , consistentently.
  • I miss the Premiership but I don't miss it when I hear West Ham advertising ticket prices £22 for kids & £42 for adults for a game against Norwich
  • I don't think you appreciate it at the time until you lose your premiere league status . I miss it and I wish my two boy were around to see it but sadly they have only been around when we have been distinctly average - and that's being kind.
  • I miss it - but mainly because it represents the time when I was most active in following Charlton between the ages of 15-22. Never missed a home game, went all over the country, had a few friends made purely through football who I have since drifted apart from, first steps in a life of pubs and pints, kicked every ball from the stands.
  • I don't really, although of course I wouldn't say "no". I was a Charlton regular before the days of the Premier League and my desire for us not to go back to L1 is probably greater than my desire to get back up to the Prem.
  • I'm going to say yes. The reason I say yes is that the club has gotten itself into really dire financial straights due to mismanagement by post-Curbs board members and managers. If the club at least had Prem money then it wouldn't have mattered as much if managers made bad signings. At this level though you can't really afford to make mistakes.
  • Yes, but not as much as I did when we were in league one playing teams I didn't know existed.
  • Yes...Having followed Charlton for now over 13 years and following the team from Canada, I miss watching televised games when Charlton were in the Prem....It may have been only 4-5 games per season and it may have been our competition that drew the television coverage (Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U, etc.), but a group of us (all Charlton followers - no really!! lol) would gather at a local establishment to watch the games and it was really an enjoyable outing...I miss that - and the level of play we witnessed......
  • Yes - I got to see Charlton on TV every week, more or less. Now it's once a season.

  • my favourite season was 2000-01, when we were competitive in every game, regardless of opponent, played great football and suddenly were a proper tier 1 team. Of course there were loads of new/shallow fans, but the heart & soul of our support was dominant (20,000 crowds, not 26,000). And while the big money teams rose to the top, the league was competitive such that falling behind to (say) Man U or Arsenal didn't automatically signal 'game over'

I'd love to have those times back -- but the reality of promotion nowadays doesn't ensure that. Instead it's scrapping away for points with your closer rivals, and watching exhibition matches against the big teams. Hence only mild envy towards teams like Palace, Norwich etc..
  • I miss it, as i don't believe the PL was/is as boring as some claim, i don't agree with the crazy money situation but i can't not wanna see Charlton compete at the highest level with better players and against some of the best players in the world.

We may never win the league but id always hang on to the hope we did what more and more of the middling teams seem to manage and have some fun in Europe.

I also never really understood some people's objections to it having to many foreign players as i have always been able to relate to players from wherever, just as much as if they grew up next door, i like having foreign players at the club.
  • I miss it. Outside the Premiership, it is hard to enjoy a game that we don't win. A 1-1 draw with Barnsley usually seems like a bad day out whereas a 1-1 draw with any Premiership team was usually a good performance.

Fan of our football this year then?? It is opposite of how we play!
  • I miss it massively. The excitement all week of playing a big team, even though we'd be under the cosh but the off chance of beating or drawing with them, the sell out crowds, plastic or not, added to the atmosphere. The sparks of brilliance from our Premier League quality players.

I love Charlton whatever division we're in and I loved watching us win more regularly in League One but none of that compares for a second with the thrill of being amongst the big boys (and for a couple of years being on the periphery of the European slots).

Could not have put it better myself

Sorry didnt think I necessarily said I was enjoying where we are in the League or our style of Football this season.

I was just saying I prefer watching Championship football over Premiership football in general because I've seen mid-table Premier League clashes that have been cagey affairs whilst the majority of Championship fixtures I've seen (aside from Charlton) have been open and anyone has had a chance of victory... take the 3-3 between QPR and Burnley for example!!

In fact if you take it back to the Charlton side of things you'll notice that I've mainly said it doesnt bother me what League Charlton are in, so long as there is a Charlton for me to support I'll always enjoy going to watch them!!
  • @rileyaddick67 the part of watching Charlton in Hamilton that you left out was that we would invariably get routed every time we were on TV over here! I came to dread the TV appearances whenever we needed a result.
  • Personally I think the club lost it's soul in the PL. We had players here just to extract every last penny even though they were millionaires many times over.....I think the wages in the top flight are absurd, the behavior of some of the players questionable and then add on the annual fight to stay up to enable the so called stars to maintain a lifestyle which is way beyond what anyone here will ever achiveve, is a recipe for me to say NO I don't miss the Premier League. Just remember the poor showing by the so called Premier league players when we got relegated.......they couldn't be arsed in the main.
  • I dont miss it but its the place to be. Hate all the games they move about lunchtime/evening/sunday afternoon etc.
