in my 35 years following Charlton, mine has to be the momentum and feel good feeling of the Division One Champions season. I went to 14 away games and saw 12 WINS!!!!
What stays with me is the feeling i got after each game when Powell did his tunnel jump and the really great boost i got every week leaving the grounds mainly from around the North and what joy was had at Carlisle with other lifers. I stood in the stand watching my hero's and at full time when our great target was reached, watched as our joy filled fans spilled on to the pitch. At that moment i just turned to my dad and said, 'we've fucking done it' and burst into tears. I'm welling up now just remembering what emotion feelings our club has given me.
It wasn't a dream that season it was real and it was my Charlton that made life feel just great. I want need my Charlton back. Maybe it's sentimental but i want that feeling again with Chris Powell as our manager.
Play off final 98 (still cry watching it) Danny Mills' late winner at Villa Park in the 4-3 win in 99 Silencing the arrogance of Henry and Highbury after beating them 4-2 (I've never heard or seen such shock and disbelief at a game when they went 4-1 down) The Wimbledon League Cup games of the 95/96 season Both wins against Millwall in the 95/96 season, particularly away in the snow 3-2 away win at Coventry in the FA Cup in 2000 The 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield in 98 Chris Powell's goal against Coventry as shown earlier in the thread The 4-2 win against Chelsea on boxing day The play off ties against Ipswich in the 97/98 season Yann's volley against Hartlepool on the final day of the League One title winning season Beating Sheff Wed at home in the FA Cup 3rd round in 96 Beating Man City away 4-1 in the Premiership in Dec 2000 (I think) - nothing beats seeing that tosser Weaver get lobbed from 30 yards by Jensen's shin
JImmy Melrose Hat-Trick against Everton (86/87) Battle of the Bridge 88 Old Trafford May 1990. Last game of the season. The reaction from the United fans in the corner next to the away end will live with me for ever. Greenwich council finally giving us permission re the valley at the Town Hall in 1991. December 5th 1992. First game back HOME. Beating the scum 1-0 at Upton Park in 1992 Blackburn away in the FA cup 4th round replay (1-0 win). 2-0 win at the toolbox in the snow. Bowyer's overhead kick against the scum in 1996 at the Valley Play off Semi Final games against Ipswich 98. Best Charlton away support in terms of noise ever and the valley was rocking in the return leg. Wembley Play Off 98 The 99/00 Championship title wining season. Missed only one game home and away that season. Great times. Coventry away FA Cup 5th round Highfield Road 4-1 win against Man City at Maine Road 2000/01 season. Beating Arsenal 1-0 at the Valley 2000/01. Beating Tottenham home and away on a regular basis in the Premiership years. Chelsea Boxing day 2003. Hartlepool 2012
favourite Valley memory - the 3-1 win over Preston to win promotion from 3rd division 1975 - trailing 0-1, Bob Curtis misses a penalty (a rarity indeed), Bob Goldthorpe bundles over the line to equalise and 2 great strikes from Killer Hales to wrap it up - evening kick-off, bumper crowd and fans celebrating on the pitch after the final whistle
Beating Cardiff after going 2 down was pretty special a couple of seasons ago!
Good shout - when we went 5-2 up and were sweeping through them it was great, coupled with the atmosphere of a night game. However, those last 2 goals in the final minutes just tainted that one for me.
Playing at home to Middlesbrough, must have been around 1998. Paul Gascoigne was playing for them - he'd been in the news during the week for some sort of drinking related misdemeanor, and got a bit of stick the first couple of times he touched the ball. Later in the first half they got a corner in front of the Covered End, Gazza runs over to take it and Blocks E and F rise to salute him, chanting "England's Number 8". Love Gazza, loved our fans that day as well.
Think I read somewhere that he bought some of our away supporters a crate of beers for the train journey home when we played up at the Riverside later in the season.
Oxford away 97/98, 2 late goals to turn round a 1-0 deficit Palace away, Rommedahl
Nothing like being in the away end when it goes ballistic.
I'd forgotten the Gazza one. I'd also say the positive reception we gave Beckham (most of us, anyway) after the 98 world cup set us apart somewhat.
My favourites - Robbo's United equaliser. Super Clive's third against Southampton. And strangely, during a friendly in the late 90s when an away goalkeeper had his glove bag on the goal line, and we chanted 'get your handbag out the goal' until the ref heard and made him move it. That one really tickled me.
When we stuffed Chelsea 4 -0 , 75/76 what a game, Chelsea fans weren't happy, lit fires in the covered end and broke all the windows in the valley club. Still got the press cutting, CHELSEA GO UP IN SMOKE ! Those Andy Nelson days were special.
Have to say 3-3 with Man utd. Pure class. Tension when we went 3-3, never experienced that again...hope I do though this season!!. I was in South stand at the time and we were all hugging each other...great day...
I always remember Port Vale away in (I think) the play-off season, I think it was the first or one of the first times the Board, Murray, Varney, etc had paid for the away travel and the atmosphere in the away end was class, Mendonca scored.
Port Vale in about 93, about 20 Charlton got on the train back home from Stoke. The train was packed with United who decided to make fun of our handful getting on. One Charlton wag struck them down with flames with "at least we support our local team"! 1-0 Charlton
3-3 Home v United. As a fiver year old I explained to my dad that this was 'the game that changed my life' and fuelled my love for charlton and footie.
1-0 Home v Arsenal. Covered my eyes when they took the Vivas stepped up to take the pen then the Valley roared!
3-2 Home v Blackburn. With my late great uncle who was a spurs fan and after Friedel scored dragged me away. I remember walking up the steps of the East stand and turning round just as Claus looped in that winner!
1-0 Home v Blackburn. That Tal El FK, great memory with my old man.
2-1 Home v Villa. Late winner from Hughes, generally thought we were going to stay up after that
1-2 Away v Wendies. Thought we had bought our ticket to Wembley!
Happy relfecting that nearly all were at the valley, god i love that place
Every game I have been to with my son is a favourite. Too many, too many great memories, but the return to the Valley against Portsmouth is/was so special it is a day I will never ever forget.
Jim Melrose 9 second goal against West Ham (and w/h kicked off)
and his hatrick against Everton whilst (Kevin Sheedy scored 2 quality freekicks as well)
Watched those two videos more than any other in my lifetime I reckon. Tragically, we've lost the West Ham one. If anybody ever sees the footage anywhere, please, please tell me!
When Eddie Firmani played his first game back at the Valley, against Bury, after returning from Italy in 1963. A masterclass from my all time favourite player.
2-0 win at Palace in the cup replay in 1969. Ray Treacy at his finest.
Anytime Harry Gregory scored at the Covered End and then jumped on the low wall behind the goal and saluted his adoring fans.

the shock and disbelief - a bit soppy but proof fairytale endings do happen

Another is definitely Jensen's goal against Blackburn, beating Chelsea on pens at Stamford Bridge, sending Palarse down, Lisbie's hattrick!
Too exhausted in final to be tearful.
Sending Palice down was enough for me to suffer all the s*** Charlton serve up in the future.
Also 5-0 southampton again , super clive cor we could do with him now.
Sorry saints fans you are whipping boys.
My son being mascot against Barnsley leading the team out in front of a full house brought a tear to my eye i will never forget that moment.
