Happy charlton fans ?

We have had enough doom and gloom threads on here the past week just wondering if anyone's happy with what Roland is doing , I for one am actually quite happy and excited to see where he's gonna take this football club

for instance signing a player benfica and west ham were looking at and that player scoring 16 goals in 20 games this season,
Along with signing players up on long contracts I.e wiggins.

Anyone else excited to see where he's gonna take us ? And hopefully not league 1 .

  • I'm excited and a concerned at the same time, like I think quite a few of us. I'm so used to not believing what people say, though I think the strategy of building from the youth team and slow and steady is good, I'm a little worried whether we will stay up.

Interesting times indeed. Looking forward to seeing some of the new players on Saturday.
  • I think the future is bright. But change doesn't happen overnight. We need to rebuild before we get back to the promised land. If that means going down, then so be it. Jimenez and Cash / Slater left us in a big hole and it's gonna take a while to get out.
  • I think the future is bright and I actually think that - in the long run the younger players will be the best option. The only problem is that it will take the new team time to gel and get match fit and devlop some understanding - now do we have that time? They need to learn to work together quickly to save our season. I think there is enough time - but I think Saturday's game at against Birmingham is a vital win - not just for the points but for confidence. Overall I'm excited for Saturday - I hope Piotr gets a game - but we really need a win.
  • Have to admit I'm really excited... Like people have said we've got an interesting young 20-year old Striker who is a hot prospect who knows where the goal is and rejected the approaches from Benfica and West Ham... Wiggins is signed up to a new Contract as well and we tried spending £1.5m on a player for the first time since we were first relegated from the Premiership?

Of course we could go down to League One again which would be a nuisance but but sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward and at least we'd go down there knowing we wouldnt really be at risk from Administration (unless Roland wanted out) and with his backing we'd stand a huge chance at bouncing straight back up...
  • I think the future is bright
We will be playing in Orange next season
  • Relegation will wipe the face of some on here. The futures bright. In league 1, seriously?
  • I believe that long term this could be a plan, taking us forward at a time when many other clubs are going to feel the effects of FFP.

But right now with Charlton sitting in the relegation zone, I'm not sure whether the whole focus should be in preserving our Championship status.

The time to implement radical change should logically be in the summer - but even then, the last time we did so, we got Dowie, Andrew Mills and relegation.

No doubt Roland's mantra - if you're going to do it, do it now.

  • This will take time, investment hopefully is being made in the correct places, but I will be far more relaxed when we pull away from the bottom three.
  • Relegation will wipe the face of some on here. The futures bright. In league 1, seriously?

And IF we don't go down and these youngsters help us stay up the yes the future is bright !
  • Happiness is just an illusion.

  • I'm quite happy to see how this takeover pans out, but what is it with all these posters who joined the list in the latter part of January and who seem determined to be Duchatelet cheerleaders?
  • I'll try be positive again for all these negative people , win our next two games and millwall lose away to burnley then were out of the drop zone 1 point above millwall with a game in hand and also in the quater final of the fa cup,
probable no it probably isnt but it's not impossible either and I'm sure everyone will be a lot happier then won't they.

And why can't people be happy about our new chairman because in my eyes we wouldn't have players of the class of Piotr or reza if it wasn't for him yes we have lost dale and yann which people are gutted about but there's a very high chance we would of lost them if we stayed with slater and jiminez .
  • I'm quite excited but i acknowledge we may have to go a couple of steps back before we go forward again, in league one and/or without powell.
  • My difficulty with the new regime is the poor communication and sharing of strategy! I simply do not understand what is going on and what the plan is
  • Soory to put a reality check on the happy thread but I can't believe that some people on here are relaxed about us dropping down into League 1 !! Make no mistake, that will be a complete disaster. Have people forgotten just how tough it is to get out of that league ? Ask Sheffield United fans if they think it's not a problem. Whatever happens, it's vital to stay up so that we can take stock at the end of the season and hopefully make a big push for promotion next year. That is assuming Roland is serious about reaching the Premiership because that is where the serious money is, and he strikes me as someone who might be interested in that ! That does mean spending serious money as well though and that might not sit easy with him !

I do agree with this but nobody knows if we're gonna go down , obviously I hope we don't because Roland is obviously planning for next season already because Polish Pete said in he's interview he was wanted for the summer next season
So yeah I think we could have a young exciting team next season in the championship , I'm not powells biggest fan we just have to get behind him and the players this season and hope for a better one next year !
  • Like Jiminez, the more other people complain about them, them more inclined I am to defend them!

I am neither happy nor unhappy yet - as I said, I'll wait to see how things pan out. It just feels, though, as if since the mid part of January a number of people have joined this list who sound as if they work for a PR company promoting the new ownership.

  • I agree with Firmani9 in that it is ridiculous to talk about 'never mind if we go down'. It would be crazy not to give absolute priority to maintaining our status. The question that is troubling me is 'if I was Roland, would I choose Chris Powell to get us out of trouble'. Tactically he seems to be unable go resist getting 10 men behind the ball and defending for their lives, it is our failure to score goals this season that has got us where we are. Can he change ? Will he change ? It's a big decision for Roland, but he seems tough enough to take it

  • I am optimistic about the future, generally think that in a few seasons time we are gonna be delighted with the position our club is compared to the amount struggling still with the finances.

Would much rather slowly build and have this club for the next generations of my family to support then risk it all for a few years of over-spending with some short term success.

Only two negatives for me, that i am desperate for CP to adapt to the new regime and be the coach that grows this fresh team back towards the PL in the next few years and despite believing we will stay up think the rest of this season could be a long drag over the finish line.

I don't buy in to the attitude that the RD style of running clubs is destroying our soul, as it is just a new twist on the link up system that we have failed to really get involved with in my time as a Charlton fan, i am looking forward in the seasons to come, seeing more of our youth team getting a go joined by some exciting foreign talent.

My apologies if me trying to enjoy being a Charlton fan and not always seeing the worst case scenario as the most likely offends any posters. ;-)
  • ''we wouldn't have players of the class of Piotr or reza if ''.
Take it you have seen these 2 play a lot or just special clips on utube?
I will reserve my judgement until Sat or even a few weeks after.
At least we knew Yann and Dale Stephens were class players and sold far too cheaply imo!

And you know how much they was sold for ?
Well nobody thought we would get polish Pete because benfica, west ham and Aston villa were looking at him and both of them have got far superior goal scoring records to yann and they have got age on their side.
  • I'm excited but obviously nervous too. However that excitement could fade quickly into depression if the new strikers don't turn out to be good'uns. But at least its gunna be interesting!
  • I'm happy and excited and posted this elsewhere but it's where I'm at at the moment :

Taking Alnwick out of the equation I can't see what he has done wrong so far. We have brought in a RB and two strikers who are all young and have joined on long term contracts. We have loaned in a LM and a keeper who on paper is better than those we already had. Wiggins had signed a long term deal. He had agreed to spend upwards of 600k sorting the pitch out. Yann has gone but we offered him a two year deal on terms that the Club felt were appropriate considering his age and injury record which he choose not to accept. In the bargain we got a fee that allowed us to sign a promising youngster for a fee. Stephens went and that had been on the cards and once again we got a fee for a soon to be out of contract player. We may still go down but the squad has had a shake up and we were not exactly doing well with the old lot. Ok he hadn't given CP a new contract yet but why would he until he is satisfied of his ability.

It looks to me that he is looking for value for money. Bring in young hungry players, promote our own academy boys, a sprinkling of loans and in doing so reducing the wage bill and making us more financially viable.

I'm not sure it will work but I'm more of the opinion it will rather than the doom mongering being promoted by others on here.
  • In a nutshell:
Short Term- Infuriated, gutted, frustated, we're going down.
Long Term- Good, believe we'll spend when we need to

    Large good post
    But
Doom mongering being promoted - I enjoy going to every home game and have done for many years. Despite the past season and a half I still look forward to going to the Valley but more often than not come away disappointed with the result, performance or both. I don't care who the owner is, how much money is being spent. I don't even care who the manager is. I just come to see some good football and hopefully more wins than loses at home in a season so for me it is and has been for a while doom and gloom
  • Happiness is just an illusion.

who ever wrote those lyrics was a charlton supporter !

"What becomes of the broken hearted"
We will know by the end of the season
  • I don't want to even think of another season in League One.
However we are now in a. much better financial position so we should be optimistic for the future.
Great to see the youngsters coming through but I think our season will be decided by who we bring in on loan.
A decent midfielder is a must.
