As Chris Powell indicates, Charlton supporters want to understand that the plan is. Charlton was / is well known for having a great academy. Paul Hart is doing a great job. Is Duchalet going to build on this by supporting Charlton to get to a Category A youth status, so protecting the value of charlton players from poaching by premiership clubs ? That would be something, I would definitely be happy with and support.

What is the plan and the identity of Charlton Athletic ? Is the club going to be imprinted with a Duchalet pan Europe branding and lose its identity as an independent entity ? Are we Duchalet Athletic UK or Charlton Athletic ?

What is the plan ? Richard Murray needs to be earning his corn / protecting his investment (if he still has that at Charlton) / and carrying out his job as non executive director in communicating with supporters, playing staff what the Duchalet plan is or getting Duchalet to share it with the rest of us. I understand that was the aim of his job is to reassure and communicate with supporters. It is time to start doing that job.

Addressing Chris Powell's question on the BBC and Chicago Addick carefully written article would be a good place to start.

I can remember many years ago Prague asking for a business plan for a forthcoming season, that was when we had a fan friendly board, didn't get one then doubt we will get one now.

if duchatlet doesnt like to be undermind and if chrissy powell wants to stay in the job he will be forced to play these loan players from liege from now on imo

Like I say, Duchalet wants to play Euro football manager and wants a coach not a manager. If a manager is expected to put together a team on a shoe string, the manager needs to build team spirit and pick the characters that will help the team and strengthen in areas they need to strengthen. The respect of the team and accountability of the manager is massively undermined if the real manager is Duchalet who appears rarely to go to games and works through staff and is the one making all the decisions on the playing side. Where is Duchalet's accountability ? Will football players want to come play for a coach where they will have no security or know that that person has got their back ?

Duchalet needs to start explaining himself. CP comments were careful but the window is closing and with the contract situation, the club risks relegation and he is speaking up for himself and players for trying to build a team that can retain itself in the championship. I am still waiting to see that Duchalet is good for Charlton. It all appears to be a lot of TINA so far. Whatever that TINA is Duchalet or Murray have not shared with the customers / supporters yet.

very true the team spirit powell gets from the players is amazing at times
  • I know people are going to shoot me down, but over the past 3 years i have seen so much dross football, so much of no chances,no shots on goal, opposing goalie not having to make a save,so much of me leaving the valley thinking 'i 'm not doing this again', dreadful hoofball (and that happened even during our promotion year too), that part of me thinks, maybe it is time for a good shake-up of the football club in lots of ways - maybe its time to go the way of the likes of Watford of last year - surely it has to be better than the shite i have had to watch over the past few years.
When you think about it, the likes of Brian Clough would have wheeled and dealed if they had no money to spend, whereas we seem to have stuck with the same players for the past 3 seasons - maybe its time for us not to be so parochial, and look outside for inspiration and to move forward.
    Maybe that time is now.

Could have sworn we won a league. Championship in last 3 years scorin a record number of Goals. Then Consolidate our place In Championship which is one of the most competitive leagues in Europe.
No fucking pleasing some of our fans
Assuming that you go to games how many times have we played really good football.
I am not gratefully to CP or the board for us winning the 3rd tier league when we should not have been there in the first place
Some of our fans are to easily fucking pleased
  • Liege have spent money this year, they spent money the season before, not mega amounts, but enough to lead the Pro League at the moment. The Belgium journalist who was on Charlton Live sounds far more positive, and seemed to have spoke to Roland about us, and how he sees Charlton as on the same level as SL

I suspect the RD team have found the club is a complete mess and loads of things need sorting. Moving players for SL is the quick fix for now, and some more will come in the next 13 days from both Belgium and Britain. There's still a lot of transfer window left, and they've been in charge for 10 days.
  • At last positive and speaks common sense well done. You

I think they'll be lucky to secure the club's status without spending any money and I am not confident that position has been accepted yet.

Collectively we are in a much better position to make that judgement than someone coming in, however astute they may be. But there is still time, even if it involves loans.
  • Thanks for answering my question, Rothko. Interesting.
  • BTW, it's worth listening to the audio of the interview, sounds different to the way it reads.

    Yeah,good post,
I checked out S Liege on Wiki, there are a few similarities to us, their avg crowd is circa 24k with ground holding 30k, their first kit is red and white, and their nickname is 'Les Rouge'. I also notice they have a Israeli coach and also Tal Ben Haim on their playing staff - is RD jewish? IIf so, then expect to see Avram Grant as possibility for new 'coach' . The diamond centre is in Belgium isnt it? is it in Liege?

I tend to think in January you'll be quoted stupid prices and loaning from the Premier League or one of the network is a more effective way of doing it. Doubt anyone around us will be splashing the cash, and all will be looking for a loan from the top divisions to make a difference.

Stay up with good loan signings, and then go for it in the summer.

The quality of football always looks better when you're winning. I don't remember too many people complaining about the *quality* of our football two years ago.

And if you truly cannot express gratitude to Chris Powell and
    HIS squad made up of
    HIS signings coached by
    HIS staff
for hauling us out of the third tier of English football when previously we were only heading further into the abyss, then I'm not sure it's worth bothering to give a more in depth answer.
I remember boos ringing out of the Valley at times 2 years ago and know plenty of people who were not happy with HIS football 2 years ago and are still not.
  • Let's go get Pep Guardiola then. Or maybe we could tempt Sir Alex out of retirement. I'm sure some CAFC fans would still find something to boo...

IMO Powell has done a great job with the resources he's been given. He deserves a contract extension based on the last two full seasons alone.

I think it unlikely that he is Jewish, he went to Katholieke_Universiteit_Leuven, which is the worlds oldest surviving Catholic Uni.

Yes, won the league with over 100 points, records goals.etc.etc - cant argue with that...
However, from January of that year (around the time Kermy became a regular) we played Hoofball - full stop. It was shit but effective in a crap league. But it dont work in the Champs - you get sussed a lot more easier, but CP hasnt changd the style to accommodate accordingly. The only reason we got to 9th last season was because other teams took their foot off the pedal - of what i recall, we were still looking behind us at relegation til about 2/3 weeks before end of season.

    Love this.

You do understand a league table reflects performance over a 46 game period don't you?
Are you sure, I thought the last six were just for fun
  • We all know that we are missing a cutting edge up front. And I think this can either be addressed OR we will be fed a diet of 4-5-1 perhaps - depending upon how well the Liege left sided player fits in. I sense decisions will be made after the next couple of games and they will definitely be made before the window closes. To do nothing would be reckless and that does not sound like Roland Duchatelet.
People have mentioned Richard Murray but perhaps there is another influence? I understand that Martin Prothero has spoken very highly of Chris Powell over the past year and I expect his contact with the new regime could continue in this vein. I am sure that RM and MP will advise on the reality of the current league position and that Slater's spin is irrelevant.
But like everyone else I have no idea what the outcome will be this month. I hope they are decisive and secure the best striker available to help climb the table and for a cup run. And to send a message to the fans that this new regime means business!

  • I think Part time Prothero has left

He has definitely resigned from the board of the three companies. Whether he has left the building or not my assertion is that he will pass across his views and observations on the whole management team (football and non football). And the immediate opportunities and threats.
A chance conversation with someone who knows him plus a few other things tells me that Martin Prothero will tell it how we see it, namely give Powell the playing resources (and pitch) and he will dig us out of the bottom five.

  • Got a feeling Powell will be gone tonight hope i'm wrong.

And they should listen to Martin Prothero about the football why, exactly? Because he used to work in marketing for a sportswear company?

On the non-football side, he is the man responsible for wrecking the staff - creating a dysfunctional structure, appointing Bradshaw and ignoring multiple representations from respected long-serving employees who have since quit. Doesn't seem much of a recommendation.
  • one of the more interesting threads I've read on CL for a long time.

I can see the theory that Roland won't listen about the team needing investment, because that's what all managers will say when a new chairman comes in.

If you are Chris Powell, how long before you become so disheartened that the board don't help you, that you decide that he can't work under these conditions any longer.

Our best chance of getting out of our current mess is to trust Powell to do his job (ie identifying areas of the squad that desperately need attention) and helping him by finding these players etc.

Message to the chairman: Sign up Powell first, and give him the chance to do his job.

(With the clear motivational abilities SCP possesses, imagine what a strong Charlton squad could be capable of...)
