  • joe pigott, read chris dickson? i sincerely hope not, but will he come good in the view of those who have seen him play close up? ...and will the george howard incident have shaken up his holiday vibe/confidence?

Damn I haven't seen him "close up". Reminder to myself to change my seat at The Valley

  • joe pigott has zero attributes in common with chris dickson.

I have every confidence he is at least a championship level player in the making. the lad is finding it hard because at youth he was always one of the stronger ones on the pitch. his one outstanding ability is his gamehead. but as a CF at the moment, he faces a testing time.

he isnt quick enough to rely on pace and therefore he seems a bit lost in a team that doesnt play intricate football. but he is a great link man, he has a wonderful ability to shield the ball and pick out the killer flick or round the corner ball to a runner.

i am worried for him as if we play with the same possession tempo as last 2 seasons, he has no chance of living up to his potential.

U should think of joe as a Teddy Sheringham or Raul type player.....great in a team that is decent at the level they play...as he brings the best out of others in the team. but he isnt going to grab games on his own and boss them, not for a few years at least.

but he is certainly no chris "bag of cement touch" dixon
  • Have only seen him in the first team games he has played but I would say it was clear he has good touch and vision and a good shot. No pace, and currently, no power. Will come good, hope we are patient enough for that to be with us.
  • Piggott based upon his record at lower levels could well be the most natural striker we have. If I hear them announcing Church this season I may well throw my Bovril.

I was really impressed at how much Pigott appeared to progress when out on loan. When he came back he Looked a much more rounded player than the one that played against Millwall. I'm not sure if he's ready for the Championship, perhaps a six month loan somewhere where he'll get regular game time and then bring him back in January to see if he's continued his current rate of improvement ?
  • I rate piggot quite highly but agree a six month loan in league one will be ideal all round .
  • I would have rather kept Michael Smith!

tbh, i wanted to incite with the dickson reference, so i could scare up some views on joe pigott, because i hear sooo many rate him, but don't see much to get excited about in the online highlights, to which i am limited, being offshore since 1987 & only returning for occasional visits/charlton games.
  • albeit that i do recall being at the valley for an edgy pre-relegation 1-0 win over palarse in 08(?), where dickson came on late and looked marginally average/not that bad, but again, i am not a regular.

  • I think he has potential but the thing he has to crack is the know how to deal with bullying centre backs. The fact is, despite being a decent size, he hasn't yet shown he can win headers and put himself about. If I was our manager last season, I would have got Kermogant to mentor him. When he gets this, it could start getting interesting.
  • The lack of goals last season was not down to poor strikers, but a lack of creativity through the middle and out wide. So for me we need another ball playing, visionary central midfielder and a skillful wide player that can put in a decent cross and preferably beat a player. Not asking for much!

The lack of goals were down to poor strikers (except Kermy) and ALSO the lack of creativity in the midfield.

It was indeed both, the midfield seemed unable to create any chances but we had no strikers who could conjure up a shot for themself (Fuller or Kermorgant style) - Reza had a few moments but was played out wide and wasted a bit frankly. I don't know if he'll be effective up front in this league but he has to be given the chance before I write him off totally!

    Spot on
  • Pigott could benefit from a loan abroad. Anyone know any overseas clubs we have links with?

I suspect Polish Pete may also go out on loan to the low countries.
  • As things stood at the end of last season Joe Piggott's form was about a 5.5, and Polish Pete was about a 3. In my opinion both players need a bit of help to improve, and sending either on loan to a club that simply expects the player to deliver (as in Pigott at Gillingham) would be rather unwise.
Certainly before shipping either player anywhere to get experience it would need a detailed agreement with the receiving club, but why should a receiving club take on the responsibility of player development which we ought to be doing ourselves?
In the above context maybe the network model could work in as much as an underperforming network player is not one clubs problem but every clubs problem. I'm not sure it can work like that though, or that it ought to work like that.
I don't want to send Pigott to Alcorcon for rehabilitation, any more than I want Liege to send us AA for rehabilitation. Each club ought to want players ready to make a positive impact.
PP and Pigott are now the responsibility of Big Bob and his team and they ought to make a plan to effect a positive change for each player.
  • wellll, in todays new york vs toronto game, two possible strikers hit the net, deserter defoe first, and then a certain bradley wp in the 90th min to tie it up!
