Whos your doppelganger Charlton footballer? Past or Present

After watching Danny Green for three seasons now, he's exactly what I was like on a sunday morning playing in the Kent Suburban League over at Hall Place, Crayford 15/20 years ago.

I would leave the sneaky boot in the tackle and get booked 3/4 times a season (mainly if the opposition was wearing a yellow Millwall away kit) Bottle the 50/50's and every now and then use my magical right foot to good effect. Eg: the skill and cross for the equaliser this evening. I have even out done Mr Green by scoring direct from a corner (Wind assisted up at Blackheath, March 1992)

So what past or present Charlton player would you compare yourself to football ability wise?

  • I can't make up up my mind , whether I had the energy to bomb up and down the pitch from box to box a la Jordan Cousins, the finesse ,guile and strength of the great Frenchman up top , or just ran around a lot like Churchey with no end product, I think I'll go for the last one.

I played at a low level (Bromley & Orpington 2nd div as high as i ever played), however in style i was like Jackson now, tried my hardest, played CM, popped up and scored a few goals but most of the time off the pace.
  • Moatoakil cross Danny Mills... Got forward a lot and if anyone got past me they generally tended to have no ankles left.
  • played as high as dorking plus park leagues! i would say danny haynes not playing style though coz being 6ft 3 and a half i was not as quick but ok over 100 yards! i pick haynes coz i was so unlucky with injuries
  • Corey Gibbs
  • I had a mixed football career. In my youth, I was a prolific tap-in goalscorer who could irritate defenders - I suppose Derek Hales would say that he modeled his game on my game. Then, I got a bad knee injury, lost pace and went back into central defence. I guess I was more like John Pender. In my final years, I played a lower standard in midfield and was more like a Dick Tydeman.
  • Scott parker chelsea game 4-2.

    great thread lol
  • Early years Paul Mortimer , natural ability of the highest quality and a wand of a left peg
Fitness wise Johnnie Jackson at the end of 90 mins on our treacle surface pitch , I was just shattered as soon as I got on the pitch, so in my early Sunday years I was one of the most respected lino's in the game ( that's for PBS)
Latter years when I had a dodgey knee and went in goal , Nicky Johns and unlike other well known Charlton fans who play in goal I could catch a ball !
  • Could you.also.do the shaky shaky morts arm gestures when defending.on a one on one?
  • Defending wasn't really in my remit as a player , I was a bit lightweight and preferred to waste my limited energy in creating rather than tackling ..... Weak and lazy

  • Definitely a Simon Church type player... Would run around a give it my all but that was the extent of my ability
  • cross between Wiggins and Colin Walsh
  • Only played at school but like to think I was a quick full back, like John Humphrey, but with paler skin.

One of my favourite players back then was Mark Reid and in my younger West Ham days, Ray Stewart. Those two were great at penalties though so cannot compare myself to them, plus I like to think I was speedier.
  • I considered myself to be a pretty decent attacking midfielder in my school boy football days. Not to sure which Charlton player I could compare myself with though. However Killer was the main man for Charlton at the time and I reckon I could finish just as good as him....though obviously at a total different level.
  • I like to see myself as the Miguel Llera of of the South East Essex Civil Servant's not very serious five-a-side set-up for decrepit old wannabes. Every now and again I will play a blinder that gives me the false hope that perhaps I really do know how to play this game; the vast majority of the time, however, is a steady stream of indubitable incompetence mixed up with some calamitous comedy cock-ups.

  • Sweaty Balmer, for me 100% commitment whilst pissed at KO

Colchester 5 a side. Jack of all trades, master of none, including goalkeeper. Steve Brown but without the effort.
  • Thing is, for most (if not all) of us, the worse player we think we've seen play first team football for Charlton would be head and shoulders above us in abality.

I would say your dipping of the shoulder and bemusing lack of pace was more Chris waddle than morts.

I cannot disagree with the Lino comment though.

As for me, effort wise I'd say simon Webster.
Ability wise - nothing as crap has ever got near to playing pro football. Just watching some vets games and seeing how much time they seem to have on the ball after being 20+ years retired, realises this.

I was more of a rugby player than footballer but did dabble on Sundays with the Kent Suburban League and the London Accountants League.

By preference I was a goalkeeper but also played on the pitch. I relished the physical side of the game and ran around a lot, not always effectively. I also liked to shoot from distance which worked occasionally but more often than not gave various old boys innocently walking their dogs adjacent a rude shock as a misdirected ball struck them between the shoulder blades!

Reading back the above I fantasised that I was Charlie Wright, latterly Nicky Johns, in goal and Kishishev, although he came along years later, probably best exemplifies my efforts on the pitch.
  • Djimi Traoré best left back (in the changing rooms).
  • Super Clive, my finishing was top draw. I was crap at headering, cant remember Clive scoring too many with his head either.
  • Been reading CL for a couple of seasons now, been a Charlton fan since 95/96 season, so i thought i'd join up and join in on this one!

I've played since the age of 11 in goal, i'd consider myself to be like Ben Hamer! Good shot stopping abilities, i'm slow at the quick release of the ball to my back four/midfield, and even after all this time playing in goal, commanding the box, coming for crosses is one of my weaknesses. Who would be a goalkeeper??

Anyway, hello CL, please be nice!
  • When i was a youngster i played for Riverview Youth in Gravesend, scored a ton of goals and Arthur Horsfield came and watched a few times...said i could be the new Derek Hales....chose engineering over football in the end.... AKA i wasnt good enough.
  • Welcome on board James , keep posting , i hear Charlton are in the market for signing more goalies at the moment...
  • I'm a goalkeeper for my side. I don't have the slimline physique of Ben Hamer, so its going to have to be Bob Bolder.
  • Joe Pigott (ish, about the same age as well! If only I was as good...).

Everyone thought I was a target man and sprayed the ball at my head because I'm tall, got a decent header but nowhere near strong enough to hold off defenders for very long. Other than that I'll work hard to pressure from the front and got a decent eye for a goal.
  • Cheers Mendonca.

You never know! I'm tall enough! 6ft 3"
