  • Young English players really are obscenely overpriced.
  • Needs at least another full season of champinship football before he's worth that. Obviously has a good pedigree having been captain of England schoolboys but he's barely played 25-30 senior games, never played for the under 21s and we're talking 5m. No wonder clubs shop abroad.

All well and good, but Lowton, Jenkinson, Shelvey, Delph and Walcott didn't play two full seasons before moving to premiership clubs, some for more than 5 million.

And isn't he still 19? Barkley, Lallana, Shelvey, Delph, Lansbury, Wilshere, Livermore and Rodwell have all been in the Under 21's over the past couple of seasons, pretty hard to be picked over them, but I think he'll be in by the end of this season
  • That would be too much to turn down.

    Agreed.

  • any club that buys Cousins is buying potential .. I have written on here before that potentially, I think he could be another Stephen Gerrard .. buying any player at any age is risky
  • Fair price, bite their hands off for it
  • That would be too much to turn down.

Agreed, but we should only accept a bid on the condition we can loan him back for a season. He's only just signed a new contract and his value isn't going to drop

I think we take £5mil even if every fan has to turn up at the ground and get spanked before they take him.
Interestingly this is about as likely to happen as selling Jordan for £5m.

We already have a really good discussion going on the Jordan Cousins rumour in the January 2014 Transfer thread - pages 8 & 9. Well worth reading.
  • £5m and you rip their arms off, along with anything else there comes with it
  • No doubt the figure of £5 million is a journalistic fabrication. It will be better for Jordan (in terms of learning his craft) and CAFC (in terms of the eventual fee) if he stays with us for at least another year.
  • Might sought the pitch out and give CP a transfer budget, as well as player contracts being sorted out , the new board might be tempted at that price?
  • If he goes anywhere my guess it will be to Arsenal! They have been watching him for a while and liken him to Vierra!
  • I don't think we should accept any lower than £4m with lots of add ons

If Delph was worth £8M, Walcott £12M and Zaha £15M why would we want to give him away for £5M - especially since PL clubs now get more money every year than when those players went and even more so when if there was any truth whatsoever about £5M most of it would be based on appearences, England Games, Europen qualifications etc.

In January a player is worth more to the club that owns him often, as he is worth his market value plus disruption to your season. I don't think we can afford any disruption with our best players when we are 3 points from the bottom 3. Why would we snap someones arm off to weaken our side when we are in such a periless position.

Surely RD bought us and has steadied the ship from a point of view of finances to an extent (at least so we don't have to accept any offer).

IMO we should hold onto him unless someone wants to pay us something completely unrealistic, nurture him then next year watch as a team with him, Solly, Wiggins, Gomez, Holmes-Denis, Pope and others plays entertaining, quality football which sees us punters happy.

The Uddersfield fans comments on the other thread are valid and show what can happen, but to me if you continue to sell your best players and potential kids after only 30 odd games then you better have bloody good scouts/managers or you are in trouble.

Don't get me wrong, I know we are a selling club (isn't every team to different extents), but do it when it is right fo us and for £5M now i don't think this is.

Fair comments. I don't think you can compare him to other young players as situations are different. If 5 million was offered and accepted it would only be a good move for us if it was invested in the squad.

Selling Jenkinson in 2011 showed us the benefits of selling off your youngsters when the money is used shrewdly and Chris Powell proved himself with this same scenario. I don't think we would get any where near 5 million though and if we did, we would soon know what this board are really about.

  • Although Jenkinson was out of contract, so technically was not 'sold' as such.

The money negotiated by Charlton was for the development fee, as Jenkinson was under 23.

Mind you, I take your point that the fee was shrewdly invested in signing, more or less, a completely new squad.
  • £7m at least, we shouldn't be so willing to let go of him that easily. Only thing I might be tempted to swap him for is Le Fondre. Its good to have lots of academy players in the squad and Cousins shows the others what they could achieve.
  • Parker aside we never come out with a decent fee compared to many other clubs, am not holding my breath.
However, under the new regime hopefully we can keep him, although every player has their price I am a firm believer of keeping your best players
  • £5 mill is about right, providing there is a good sell on clause or add-ons. If there is no rush to sell, his value will increase, as he improves with experience.

I dunno - we got a decent fee for Darren Bent and boy did we spend it wisely!

    Darren Bent?

Might as well of give that money to a smack head in woolwich and sent him onto one of the council estates.

    No :-(
  • Take it now and put it behind the bar, free drinks at the Valley on Cousin's transfer fee.
  • Potential but seriously overated at this stage by blinkered fans who want a home grown to make good (or anyone in a red shirt for that matter)

Not enough tackles and should stop prancing from side to side (pointing at others), backing off from the opponents................much more effective when closing down

If offered £5M.....................snatch their hand off !!
