The Artificial Pitch debate

  • Just watched the Forfar v Rangers on BT Sport played on a 3G pitch all seemed a bit sterile to me no muddy shorts. The ball did seem to skid off the surface and it took the Rangers players most of the first half to time tackles properly also missed the groundsmen pretty patterns.
  • The Saracens RFC 4g pitch is incredible and definitely the future. That one is designed especially for rugby with a 5 metre shock pad underneath, but I'm sure it would be easy enough to design one more suited to football. It's just like playing a summer pitch really, so while you do get a few burns, no more than you do on hard grass pitches.

My 10 year old played rugby on Saracens pitch and it is light years ahead of the 3G's that have been laid recently.

  • I went to watch Saracens on Saturday, and was really impressed with the pitch. It seemed to play very true, and the players seemed to treat it just the same as if it was a grass pitch, with plenty of diving going on

Now being installed by the London Skolars Rugby league club
  • The 72 football league clubs met in Portugal last week and agreed in principle to permit 3G surfaces in league one and two for 2015/2016 pending more research and a formal vote later this year.
  • Just watched that Maidstone video on the previous page and the only conclusion I came to is Maidstone are shocking at the back and lucky up front.

About a minute into the video, I forgot all about the pitch as I didn't notice any difference in the bounce or run of the ball, and what does real grass play like? clubs cut it short or have it long, wet in certain areas, dry in others. So many variations that affect the bounce/run of the ball, so I really don't see why this would be an issue.

The only reason for concern for me would be injuries to the players. If that's not the case, then bring em on I say........................
  • Absolutely. The pitch plays well, the crucial work is in comparisons of injuries and types of injuries, and if that can be sorted modifications can come into play. a brilliant pure grass pitch is wonderful, but our pitch last season was woeful.
  • What will happen to teams who have the artificial surface who get promoted to the Championship and then maybe even the Premiership ??
  • But the artificial pitches are different than grass the ball will react different spin, bounce etc. Totally against the idea.

Correct. The recent Derby game I went to at Maidstone proved this.
Definite advantage to the home team
  • The '4G' pitch at Saracens is by far the best surface I have been on.

The one at Maidstone was dreadful, mainly it seems because the spread of rubber crumb was uneven. The ball never rolled but bobbled because of it.

    Match abandoned!

I genuinely always assumed 'all weather' was just that, but apparently not as the rubber crumb freezes....

Not a perfect product at all, but while the manufacturers of the grass are earning so much profit from it they aren't going to upset the apple cart.....
  • what match was abandoned ?
