Since I Was Young (Back to The Valley remix)

edited December 2013 in General Charlton
Despite being sung at twice the speed it should, Since I was Young has been a real terrace hit this season. I'm one of those who will sing along to anything, but its words i think are decent. I always get the feeling it is part of a story being told, and we are just getting a subset of it.

Something really hit with me when reading a post from @northstandsteve in the Reading post match thread:

found it a bit emotional tonight standing side by side my son singing Since I was Young with him. Two generations singing the same song and the words so so poignant, that's why I love Charlton, every so often even in defeat it gives you memories you will never forget.

After reading the 'Bonkers' thread about the unexplanable in following a football club, i've had a quick go at trying to complete the 'story' around the song.

It won't get sung, and its undoubtedly sentimental shite. But its for the @northstandsteve and Joe's, the @Greenie's, the @Henry's the @Covered End's and loads others I know currently doing the father / son thing. And hopefully one day @AFKA and AFKA Jnrs.

To me, it makes the thought of packing bags and upping sticks to 'progress' a lot more difficult.

Happy Back to The Valley Day
---

Since I was young
I followed ‘em
CAFC
The team for me
It’s from my dad
He brought me here
He saw me sing
I saw his tear

La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,

We lost our ground
We lost our way
But we’ll return
Again one day
Selhurst, West Ham
It hurt badly
But we kept on
For our Valley

La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,

And now I’ve grown
And times brought change
My love for them
Has never aged
But now my boy
He stands with me
That tears now mine
CAFC

La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la,

  • Love it. Something personal to the club and us instead of everyone else's version.
We need new songs and this is a real good effort.
B nice if it got going
  • Oh, I've got a bit of grit in my eye
  • That's brilliant. On this of all days as it sums up my pride of taking my 7 year old son to the first game back at the Valley as a fourth generation supporter.

If only I had more children to take...............
  • we need to get the studio booked.
  • Very good.
  • 3 Blokes......Where are ya......
  • Did Otis Redding ever record it?
  • Ill never remember the words.... someone pin them to the back of the seats! love it though! I go with my old man sunbury_addick

  • So that is the rest of the song. I wish lyrics would get printed in fanzines so that as support we can sing more than just VFR and CAFC, CAFC, CAFC! Would help the new generation of support we want to bring through as well!

Sounds all a bit 'Arsenal/Palace' to me
  • Never really liked the song for the Palace/ultra vibe of it, but that twist on it does add a special touch AFKA.

It dawned on me and my old boy at the start of the season that we had been season ticket holders together for 20 years. Most of which have been in the same two seats!

To this day I still credit Charlton as the single biggest thing which has brought us so close.

I think you're getting your Fa Fa Fa's mixed up with your La La La's :-)
  • La la la la la means I love you was a hit by the Delfonics

The Delfonics were part of the Philly sound

    Josh Harris comes from Philly

    The truth is out there.

Yes I know it does, but if it means more fans singing then why not? Red Army and CAFC chanting just gets a wee bit boring at times.
  • I've sung along to this song out of a sense of duty, but I hate it.

  • I actually think its brilliant.
  • I think the original screams Palace but this version is better.
I wish we could get Goodbye Horse going on the same level as since I was young or cafc

  • Excellent. Well done AFKA.

I will always remember going up to Stockport years ago and drinking with their fans in the pub before the game. They started singing their songs and asking the Charlton fans to sing one of ours after each of theirs. Got a little embarrassing when we quickly ran out and they went on with loads all personal to their club. I like since I was young anyway, but these new words work really well. :)

" Sittin' in the East Stand sun...."

  • That is incredible very emotional and as i sit(stand) in the covered end I would love us all to sing the whole version COME ON EVERYONE OVER A WEEK TO LEARN IT

  • Enjoyed singing it for 20 mins at Reading
  • Lightweight Big Andy - I did 20 mins and 4 minutes time added on ;-)))
  • Our closest ground so Reading was CatJnrs first proper evening away and was an eye opener for him standing for 90 minutes and it was great being next to him singing our hearts out. I know exactly how NSS feels
  • Nice one Cat.

I wonder how many parent / child combos we currently have doing semi regular home & aways ?
