Hamer's distribution is one of the best by a Charlton goalie since I started going in the late 60's.
I can't recall any Charlton goalie, being able to kick so directly to a Charlton player on the wing, on the half way line.
I can only recall John Dunn in the early 70's being able to throw the ball that accurately.
Thankfully, he's not as stupid as some of the fans, screaming for him to kick the ball to the1 forward, being marked by 3 defenders.
As for dropping him for Alnwick. Personally I wouldn't. I agree that he's made too many errors this season, but Alnwick has had only poor reviews from Spurs & Barnsley fans. I don't expect him to be any better & if we are trying to "bed down" & get some consistency, I don't think changing to a brand new goalie will help.
However, if he continues to make errors, then I suppose it's a possibility.
PS I also recall people calling for Sullivan last season. He gave away the first two of four he let in for Pompey on Saturday. This was against York who were about 3 from bottom of League 2. Only Cheltenham have shipped more goals than Pompey in L2. Just saying.
Im sorry but the goalkeeper position at the moment is a problem... Hamer is very lucky too have kept his place in the team IMO. Saying that there are bigger problems elsewhere.
It is a problem, and I think it's largely that Hamer's not been kept on his toes in the last couple of years - first Sullivan then Button, neither good enough to give him real competition. I do think he's a good keeper though, just that he's been going through a little drop in form.
The underlying problem is decision making, that comes with experience and he's still relatively young (I thought Brad Friedel had his best seasons right at the end of his career, for example). It means that he sometimes gets caught in positions dealing with crosses that don't help him put a positive touch on the ball, be it a punch or a catch. Sometimes he does, but of course when a keeper gets it wrong it very often results in a goal. And of course when you're struggling for form, your confidence drops a little and those decisions get a little less natural.
Hamer's positioning at set pieces is generally ok, and he's often decent in one on ones. He does over focus on the attacker standing on him at corners, but he'll learn. I don't buy that he's poor at long distance shots, he's just been beaten by some worldies of late.
Quite how anyone can say his distribution is anything but excellent is beyond me. He very often kick starts break away attacks with his intelligent kicks forward. He can laps into lazy punts to Kermo's head, but frankly our defenders are much more guilty of that than Hamer ever will be.
One thing I will say about Hamer is that he obviously cares about his performances and he seems proud to wear the shirt, which certainly isn't something we could say about all the players who've worn it in recent years.

I really don't understand all this emphasis being placed on whether his distribution is good or not. Good distribution can be responsible for perhaps 3/4 goals a season. A keepers primary job is to stop the ball going in the net. I'd much rather he'd tipped Andy Reids free kick over the bar (as he should have) than kick the ball out to our own players all game. Deano proved that you can be a great keeper yet have crap distribution.
Good keeper just having a dodgy spell. Keep faith with him. Look how everyone is suddenly on Joe Harts back after a few mistakes and from being the best English keeper since Banks he is now two bob and should be dropped by England and City. I dont understand how people especially on this site make decisions or statemenments as to how good or bad a player is on a game to game basis. Look at the player over a longer period at least ten games and then make a more considered judgement. I think that Jordan Cousins may well be the real deal and was excellent on Tuesday but lets not to much pressure on him with the hype just yet. I never understood the amount of abuse that Stephens got, now he is having a period of playing well the critics have gone quiet. Even Chris Powell was the subject of OTT comments just a few games after leading us to 9th last season, record points and Championship the year before on a budget of virtually nothing and a very dodgy set of owners giving little support. Lets hope everyone is more rational and think about what they are posting less knee jerk reactions.
but, could easily have been 0-2 if Hamer hadn't stood up long enough when Mackie was clean through in the 1st half and then we would have been knackered.
Think alot of criticism on here is incredibly harsh.
I agree that his competition, or rather lack of, probably doesn't encourage him to be on his top game at times. But no way is he as bad as people are making out.
His kicking at times is superb. His static nature when looking to throw it is my only annoyance.

I agree, no doubt there are flaws in his game and some of them quite problematic, but he is certainly not a bad keeper. Though I can't really see Alnwick as a massive improvement, or a realistic challenge, but we haven't got the money for a really top drawer goalie that will be on the bench. Catch-22, as CP faces quite a lot these days!
I think he has a lot of potential but hasn't really progressed in the last year. I've said it before but I think his problem right now is that he's far too cocky. In fact too cocky to learn. I think he needs a short sharp shock to get him back on track and then I think and hope that potential will be realised.
aint read much of the above, but he's basically got a touch of the Joe Hart to him. Can't claim crosses, is beaten from distance for fun and cares more about how he looks. One half decent season and no competition since, he's got a bit arrogant and needs someone to spell it out to him that he aint Schemeichel.
having said that, he is not a BAD keeper. he just needs to have a good look at himself, i'll be surprised if Powell/staff havent said that already. The day he is dropped is the day Powell feels Hamer just aint willing to improve his game and stop being a cocky prick.
The only other keeper i've seen available that I wish we had instead was Butland on loan. Barnsley have had a touch there
I am in the camp that doesn't understand all this Hamer baiting. Everyone thought that Button would be better but got slated against Millwall for letting that free kick go in. Hamer has potential to be a premier league keeper. Anyone see Hart last night have a stinker? Doubt he will get dropped and he has made a few clangers recently. Every keeper has their faults just like the other 10 players on the pitch. Remember the grass is always greener on the other side......

I would agree with most of this. I think he has a lot of potential but has not progressed as I would have hoped of late. Still time for him though. Can't see how we are in a position to get better and he isn't a headache for me. We could easily be singing his praises come the end of the season.
Strange that his best performance for a long time is when there are much fewer Addicks fans... or perhaps not strange at all. I could be completely wrong and he will be top class every game at the Valley henceforth.
His main fault for me is kicking long repearedly. If Yann is playing I don't like it. With two sub6'forwards it's a pass to oppo. He comes for balls and sometimes misses. He will improve. Sainted Deano never left his line so we concede goals that were never blamed on him.
He kicks it long when there is little or no alternative. Opposition teams know he will look early for our full backs so they push up on them. Their striker will then split the two CBs. I'm not sure what else he is meant to do in that situation.

Exactly. It's really strange that people can't see this. I'm sure many don't actually watch the game. They just brainwash themselves to think they see, what is already preconceived in their minds.
he needs to be more assertive to his CB's and his CM's to come and collect earlier at times so then he can mix it up more often
he does however get caught up in the game when a calmer more controlled decision is needed and the ball ends up out of play or rushed forward and given over to the opposition to easily
I thought he was the difference between the sides today. He made some great saves and also made decisions of when to slow things down. He came rushing out late to smother a ball with a striker rushing in. I felt he was great. My Man of the Match.

Randolph and Elliott are both much better keepers.
Gives the back 4 and us supporters kittens every time a high ball is thrown in.

Any Type of half decent delivery.
Any Long throw.
Back four don't trust him or so it seems.
Apart from these vital flaws he is world class.

He's ok but if i saw his name on an opposition teamsheet i would be encouraged.
Our best keeper since Bartrams kicks were alwsys greeted with keep it on the green stuff deano"
Keepers mature later thsn other players. Hamer may need a rest but does not need to be castigated the way he hss been on here.
The defence has also been dodgy this season and that never helps a keepers confidence

His distribution is spot on. He always looks for an early opportunity to get rid of the ball but it isn't always on. Not his fault.
His weakness is crossing, but that is the case for many keepers, even the top ones. De Gea anyone?
Give him your support as I think he is confidence player, despite the extrovert exterior. Particularly at the Valley.
