  • He was fantastic yesterday second half started like torres fired up everything worked for "decisive Dale"
  • I think we all can see "Stephens", but some value him on what he can do, whilst the majority value him on what he does do.

THE QUESTION IS :- IF HE CAN PERFORM LIKE THAT, WHY HAS IT TAKEN SO MANY YEARS AND WHY DOESN'T HE DO IT CONSISTENTLY ?

To be fair to Stephens his game is harder to make consistent than other players. Take Pritchard for example, its easier for him to put a shift in, get in players faces, make tackles and still be classed as having a good game. Whereas Stephens is relying on his team mates to show for the pass, be available and want the ball. If others around him arent doing that then he becomes almost redundant and people say "well Stephens didnt do much today so he must have been crap". Its why he would look a better player the higher he went in some ways.
I agree with what you say. However, it's not quite that simple.

Apart from his excellent passing (see above), he also put in far more effort, he was running, tackling & shooting as well !

If he put that much effort in every game, he wouldn't have so many detractors.
  • Well he starts shooting under, rather than over, the bar he'll be a fantastic player : - )

We have seen his talent v teams who allow us space and time. Lets see him doing it v the "In your face" sides. Then I will be a true believer.

I think you're correct he try's some passes in games which don't come off because the other player hasn't read it as quickly as he has. If you dropped him into a Prem team with better players he wouldn't look out of his depth

Two posts that get to the nub of it.

I couldn't attend last night so cannot pass comment on what sounded, from reading Charlton Life today, like an excellent performance.

However based on the games I HAVE seen he has a tendency to go missing, sometimes quite blatantly, which blights the good things he is capable of such as his goal against Bury and the odd defence splitting pass. One recent example was the Millwall match where Wilson was looking for options at a throw in. Stephens stood behind a Millwall defender!

That leads me on to ValleyGarry's point because I agree that the players sometimes do not move around enough off the ball to offer options which in turn leads to crab ball and hoof ball. Hamer also suffers from this lack of movement and gets slagged off as a result for not distributing quickly enough.
