Will the TV appearance fee make up for the lost ticket revenue?
Won't be much in it. The £30 ticket price is now untenable, given the already considerable resistance to attending matches against Millwall among a lot of Charlton supporters, yet the club will still have all the cost of security and they will still sell out so may stick to it.
I can imagine only about 10,000 Charlton fans attending, which will look poor on TV. But there's not much the club can do to resist Sky, even if Prothero et al grasped the problem.
The club needs to do carefully targeted match ticket promotions to lapsed season ticket holders if they want a half respectable crowd, I reckon. Even that will be a security issue.
Are you predicting 10,000 Addicks on top of season ticket holders or 10,000 in total ? Surely not the latter ?
Not good news tbf, im not a general moaner but the crowd would be alot better if its not on tv maybe 6k + so it will come across poor turnout and make us look like we arent very well supported
This combined with the threat of not being allowed to walk the way you want/need to after the game and recent performances against the scum will put a lot of people off.
Oh well people have their excuse not to turn up now! If there are any games fans should make the effort to turn up to its millwall and palace, and don't give me all the worry of trouble,if you don't look/want it you won't get it unless your very unlucky! that applys to all games with big hoolie element It's embarrassing the amount of fans that stay away from this game.
Regardless of the fact we're on tv , are we still going to get diverted around the houses after the game?
In which case at least the rest of the world can seeing us being diverted around Greenwich.
I believe all CAFC fans will only be allowed to attend if they catch coaches laid on from The New Den at 11.15am. The coaches will drop you off behind the North Stand whereby you will be ushered into the ground without being able to go down the pub, the chippy, the Club shop etc etc. No alcohol will be served to CAFC fans inside the ground. This applies to all CAFC fans even if you live in Charlton Church Lane. Afterwards you will be bussed back to The New Den after being held in the ground for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile 3,000 Millwall fans will be allowed to do exactly what they chuffing well like.
Er no its embarrassing how the home fans were treated after the last game, only allowed one way out of a possible 4 . Complete piss take..
I bet we wont get told before a lot of people have brought tickets if we are going to be treated like sheep again... i shall be watching NLA's posts very closely before I buy mine.
I dont care about tv or time tho, it was always going to be early.

So are you saying, you don't want any of our home games televised ? As it will be a similar turn out for any home game.
Also, it will come across, as what it is. It won't make us "look" like we aren't very well supported. Either we are or aren't very well supported. You can't have it both ways. :-)

If we have 10,000 season ticket holders at that point, I would expect 2-3,000 to stay away - especially families and older people. Bear in mind that 15% never turn up at any given game and TV plus Millwall plus security will bump that up.
They'll be offset by home ticket sales, which will be restricted to try to keep Millwall out. But it's very unlikely you'd sell 4,000 based on experience at a minimum adult price of £24/£30 with live TV. Also a significant minority of people were pissed off by what happened last season and may not bother because of that.
The club can't do any comps over and above the normal hangers plus great and good because the tickets would inevitably get to Millwall fans. Say 500 total.
Maybe 10k is a bit pessimistic, but we'd struggle to get 12k in my view unless the prices are flexed.

Nope we will be 3rd in the league and flying at this stage as tavern would say 23,000
I'm in Spain on business this weekend so its perfect
FFS when we played Cardiff at home on a Tuesday night in November (with only one home win to our name previously) the attendance was just shy of 17k...it is NEVER going to be 5/7k lower than this for Millwall on a Saturday at the beginning of the season!
I'm not so sure about all that. I think it will be nearer 14,000 home fans going. plus the 3,000 spanners. close to 17,000 sounds pretty realistic.
That might be the official attendance, but there won't be anywhere near that number in the ground for a live TV game at premium prices, which is my point. It will look terrible.
There were 2,000 no shows when we played Millwall in March and that wasn't on TV, with an official crowd of 18,013.
There were 2,500 no shows for Palace which was on TV, albeit with lower prices, but an official crowd of 21,730.
Leaving the actual turnout to one side, that's 3,700 extra paying Charlton supporters (double the Millwall match sale) for Palace as compared to Millwall, even with the deterrent of live TV.

Well, it was 15,778 actually, but in any case the turnstile count was under 11,000, including the Cardiff.
All I'm saying is that there is a potential problem here and the club needs to find a solution. Pretending the problem doesn't exist won't make it go away.

The published attendance for Cardiff was 15,778, so a long way off 17k, plus if you were at that game you'd know that there was nothing like15k actually in the ground.
We had 18,500 for Millwall home last year. TV coverage plus the desire to avoid another post match policing shambles this time round is bound to deter at least a couple of thousand from turning up.
Down to the team to make an good start to the season and persuade supporters that it's worth the bother (and money) to turn up.

Devil's advocate: What's the problem?
Does the club care about 'no shows' if they already have the money from the ticket/ST sale?

Well, they won't have the money from the match ticket sales, but as a fan my problem is that swathes of empty seats at a televised London derby will be seen and commented upon around the country and embarrass the club, especially in the context of the packed away end.

Really? What a few fellas in a pub in say Grimsby think about a few empty seats at our ground is a problem? What the hell does it matter? I'm much more concerned that we give a good display on the pitch....win 4-0 and people around the country won't be talking about empty seats...they will be talking about what a good team we are.

No i was talking about this game specifically, as the Millwall factor will put of 4k+ (all just a guess) and then others will be like its not worth the bother.
Comments
The game was already going to be switched to an early kick off, so no change there.
We always lose on TV & to Millwall in any case, so we can't do any worse can we ?
Everyone that doesn't want to go when we play Millwall, can now watch it on the TV.
Seems like good news all round to me.
Because some people are happier moaning.

But anyways continue as you are......I'm not expecting no more that 7,500 at the game and a 0-5 home drubbing.
