A Cup Run?

I'd trade all cup runs for progress in the league. If, for next season, you offered me the Carling cup final or finishing sixth and the play offs - id take the latter every time.

How old are you if you've never seen us have a decent cup run? We've had a few in the last 20 years or so.

Only 16, So tbh I have never seen one, That I can remember well.
Ok, fair enough mate. You have plenty of cup runs to look forward to then! :o)
  • A cup run would be fun but tight squads and pressure to deliver a certain league position mean that, come January, the focus is on points gap to either top or bottom... sometimes both!

Agreed but a cup run can lift a club. Fans, players and community. I think our recent attitude of playing a weakened side stinks. Until Charlton take the FA Cup seriously I'm afraid I won't be bothering to turn up for yet another dull, lacklustre and often embarrassing performance.

So if we draw Manchester United at home in the 3rd round next season you won't be there SHG?
  • Why does it have to be a trade off between league or cup, it should be possible to be successful in both competitions.

Bradford got to the League Cup final, made the play offs and got promoted.
  • Yeah, but they had Sir Phil Parkinson in charge. We only have Chris Powell.

I agree. A cup run in the season just gone, when we were generally safe in mid-table and not overstretched about promotion or relegation, would have really added some colour to the winter months. We fielded a pretty strong side in the FA Cup against Uddersfield: strong on paper but weak on grass. A truly dismal performance. At the end of the game I noticed about a dozen Old Bill each interviewing a frightened-looking youngster behind the East stand at the Lansdowne Mews end. Anyone know what that was all about?

  • Always thought our idea of a cup run was a replay!

Good point - although I think our small squad would struggle to maintain both.
  • My cup runneth over . . . not.

Knowing Charlton it will happen when we least expect it.

  • I think we've all been forgetting "The People's Cup".

However, I would love to have a good draw for the Capital One Cup, Have Manchester City at Home in the first round... I can hope?

Don't think the big guns enter the carling cup till the latter rounds

  • 16? Aww bless ya you're probably too young to even remember our premiership years, no wonder you want to see us play a 'big' club.

I still remember that Bolton game, I think it was the first year that the semis were gonna be played at wembley so everyone wanted it. Didn't we have to go to the reebok twice in just over a week, the other being a draw with us equalising in the last minute? I went to almost every away game that season and making the trip to Bolton a second time after them knocking us out of the cup was painful, I remember leaving early and hearing the Charlton cheer as we were walking down the road.

Think we played at the Reebok twice in 15 days.
1st up was the cup match, couldn't get tickets for the away end so got Chris & Kaz to get tickets in the Bolton main stand (they lived acouple of miles from the ground). Went to the Valley to get Championship tickets and was asked "How many do you want" ? Bloody Glory supporters ! ( eh, OooAh !!).

  • Thanks Mog, I was sure the league game was a draw hazy memory though, I definitely missed the last goal though, I blame my dad lol. I remember my dad saying he was glad that we got knocked out of the cup though so we could concentrate on securing promotion. Overall great season think I missed one game that year which was unavoidable and a shame as it was my last full season without being a mum lol.
  • The Wycombe league cup game was the one that got me, a premier league side at home to a league two side and they put in one of the worst performances i've ever seen from a Charlton side.

well we sacked the manager who got us to that 1/4 final ..... still waiting for the real reasons
  • The Bolton quarter final was a gutter (how did Robinson miss that chance late on from about 2 feet?) but at least we signed Jensen and Fish as a result of their brilliant performances against us that day.
  • How short your memories are. It's only a few weeks since we lifted the Kent Cup!! Really can't please some people ;-)
