Charlton centre backs comfortable in possession

If I think back over recent seasons the majority of our centre halves have looked fairly shaky with the ball at their feet but does this really matter? Is a centre-half meant to be a big bloke who can head the ball and hoof it up the pitch when required or should we expect more?
Diawara is the last centre half I can remember who could handle the ball at his feet but he didn't seem to adjust to the fact that the team were playing hoofball at the time.
Be interested to hear how CP views the role of central defenders?
CBs in the Prem seem far more mobile and pacey than those in the lower leagues.

  • Though he is suspect to the odd mistake (when they happen, they seem to end up in a goal conceded), I think Michael Morrison is very assured on the ball.

Nobody will ever be worse on the deck than Miguel Llera though.

Doherty ran him close. The pair of them always appeared to be stuck in first gear.

I always thought Llera was decent on the ball and could pick out some good passes from time to time, also has a really good free kick on him how many other centre backs take free kicks at goal. It was just his defending that was shit.

  • One Ball playing Centre Half is required in most teams and i feel we have that in Morro, just need a back up if he's injured now that Taylor has been releasd

No way is morrison assured on the ball, any slight bit of pressure on him and he panics. He is very solid player but a ball playing centre back he isn't. There probably isn't many around and if there are any they would cost a hell of a lot.

The two brighton centre backs when we played them away were very good on the ball and picked out passes left, right and centre, can't remember who they were but was very impressed by them.
  • Greer and Upson
  • I still think Morro is a bit slow on the ball - didn't notice this in L1 but players in the Championship tend to be a bit quicker.
He's a good player but has struggled this season more than I expected.

I think he's done as well as we could realistically expect for a player who's spent most of his career in L1
  • Morrison is not a ball playing defender. He turns and passes it back to the keeper from the halfway line when there are options to the sides.
Im all for playing safe but jesus when he does that its frustrating.
  • Bougherra was probably one of the best most recently.

  • Remember we are talking comfortable on the ball Championship and League one players. I've seen Rio Ferdinand treat the ball like a hot potato many times but he is still comfortable with the ball at feet.
  • Watch Llera's defence splitting pass for Wednesday's first on Saturday.

  • Llera's passing of the ball was superb at times. Most people have wiped anything positive from that campaign from their minds.
  • Both MM and DD are good ball playing defenders for the Championship IMO.
  • whilst Chris Perry wasn't exactly cultured, he at least could kick the ball in the right direction.
  • The best I can recall are Kernaghan, Pates and Fish. My Dad used to go on about Marvin Hinton, but just before my time.
  • No mentions for Talal El Karkouri?

    Agree, Plaaayer.

  • Bougherra.
  • Dailly in recent times was OK .. Morrison? .. for all his attributes is not particularly good on the ball ..... Dervite is ok given time .... I agree about Hinton, Pates, Fish and Bougherra; Llera, a much hated figure it seems, was/is an excellent long passer ... Rufus never made too many mistakes on the ball .. long ago, Peter Reeves and Paul Went were ok as were Tocknell and Madden .. I'm sure there have been a lot more decent passers amongst ex Addick centre backs .. Shirtliff ? .. not bad .. etc etc

  • David Tuttle?
  • Rufus was limited with the ball, but knew his limitations, whereas Morrison occasionally gets caught out by thinking he's better on the ball than he really is!
  • I like a centre back that is comfortable on the ball. It can make the difference between starting an attack and just giving the ball back to the other team. Morrison is okay but not really comfortable. I think, Dervite is, although he definitely has a mistake in him. I personally will forgive the odd misplaced pass if trying to use the ball positively rather than taking the easy "hoof it to Yann / Row Z" option.

His passing is superb if he has time on the ball. Give him space and he'll hit an accurate 70 yarder. His biggest problem is he'll come under pressure, try and skill his way out and all you'll see is his giant legs flailing in all directions, him hitting the floor and a goal for the opposition. That's Mig all over though - periods of absolute class and periods of abject misery. Doesn't do things by halves
  • Llera's performance in the 4-0 humiliation at Millwall was the worst individual display I've ever seen for Charlton. And the frustrating thing was that I think we could all see it coming from him.

Wasn't Pates horribly one footed though? I seem to remember he used to have this weird quirk of only being able to turn in one direction as well. Didn't matter if it meant he had to turn through 270 degrees when he could have gone 90degrees the other way. Was weird to watch.
  • Les Berry
  • Bougherra in recent years. El Karkouri wasn't bad. Llera on form had a good pass, but could also look very awkward.

Wouldn't call Morrison a ball playing defender but he's a lot more composed on the ball than the likes of Cort, Doherty and Sodje. Last season he regularly played his way out of trouble by taking a few extra touches or turning into space. He does it at times at this level. Certainly doesn't panic whenever he has the ball.

Get the impression some see him as the hard man centre back that offers nothing on the ball. I'd say he actually reads the game very well which makes up for him not being the strongest or most dominant in the air. Watch him at attacking corners, never wins a header but isn't too bad for a centre back when the balls at his feet in the oppositions box.
  • Morrison is comfortable with the ball on the floor, he is much less assured with high balls coming in, most of his massive errors have been trying to deal with high balls coming where he's headed them incorrectly...
  • Colin Pates although he's getting on now
