  • Welcome on board Mark, I hope you enjoy your time playing for Charlton.
  • No great surprise, but an excellent signing nevertheless
  • Welcome to the rollercoaster, Mark !

    And good signing, nla !
  • good news, looked better the more we saw of him last season. very composed on the ball, which we badly needed!!!
  • Looked better with each game that he played.A good signing without a doubt. He and Yann should form a good understanding.
  • Great signing
  • Good signing. Calm, good passer of the ball. He was part of our good run at the end of the season and was involved in some very good goals. Welcome abord Mark
  • Can't help thinking that if we keep bwp, Gower could help him get his form back with the chances he creates

That's a good thought. A mobile midfielder who gets forward could provide BWP with balls to his feet, which might be more productive than high crosses and knock-downs. But the big question now is: Will BWP still be with us in August?

BWP's problem was not that he didn't get any chances. It was in fact the opposite.

  • Interestingly Gower would be ideal for getting BWP for one on ones with the keeper, the problem is BWP is not good at converting them. He has been a great part of our history over the last two years, but if we are to move forward we need to be looking at better.

With so many players being released to cut wage bills, its quite likley that we could pick up someone who will take us to that next level and benefit from Gowers passing.

Try as I might, I haven't forgotten BWP's many missed one-on-ones, Kap10. I started a thread a few weeks ago about the decline of BWP and the consensus of opinion among Lifers is that he just ain't good enough for an ambitious Championship team. Like you, I hope we can acquire a striker who will benefit from Gower's passes. Onwards and upwards....

can't say the signing of Gower is the mark of a Club with that much ambition, in my opinion

Well corrected, Large. We, the fans, are ambitious, even if the club isn't.

  • You think a player who has played his way through most divisions and out if this one before

And in the prem only regularly up until last season

Who had the best % of completed passes in his last full prem season

And showed in his time here that when fut passes the ball around as well as any other champ player isnt ambitious

The only thing that goes against him is age he has never had real pace the same as JJ because if they had both mark and johnny would never have played here

The weight of expectation is not to be confused with ambition

He has a yr deal due to his age and rightly so i can tell you for fact we were not the only club looking at him or who wanted him including one club whos fans could easily ask the ambition question as they were a prem club a lot more recently than us who still get parachute money

    In MG we trust .

No disrespect to mark gower but signing him does not show ambition to improve on ninth. He will be a good player for us i am sure but ambition for next season in my opinion would be going out and buying à 20 goal à season striker with some serious money on the table.

Unless CP has an ambition of à better style of play for the long the term then mark gower is a good way to start.

I'm sure that your point about CP having ambition is absolutely spot on, otherwise why would he be in the job? Of course, it's another thing altogether if he isn't given enough money to make those improvements over a single summer window.

I think MG will turn out to be a top signing. Not a star name like many on here would have loved but described by Swansea fans as "instrumental" in their promotion to the Premier League and "an unsung hero". He knows how to compete in the top half of this division and I think our squad is going to be a lot better with him than without him.
  • Good signing which will make us a better side for this coming season. One of the best passers in English football, and with a decent pre season behind him, will make us an attractive side to watch.
  • To me it shows the ambition to retain possession and wait for the right moment to break a team down

Yes we still in my opinion need a better striker and i feel weel still need another 2 players ontop of a striker to push on past 9th

But the ambition to improve the squad is there
Its the expectation of star names that is getting confused with ambition

Lets wait till the end of August before we judge ambition, we don't know what Gowers role will be. I think there will be a few interesting comings between now and then, a lot of which will be late acquisitions.
  • Exactly Kap we have started with a good solid signing and released enough players from the
Squad and wage bill to indicate that we can expect more
  • Good signing. We need players like Mark Gower who can put their foot on the ball, pass and control the game from the centre of the park in the same way Mark Kinsella used to.
  • Pleased with this.

    Welcome aboard, Mark.
  • I wonder how many thought Keith Jones was an 'unambitious' signing at the time?
  • This is a good signing, he's one of the best passers of a ball in the division, plus he's an experienced older head with plenty left to offer.

One thing I'm looking forward to seeing over the coming season is seeing some of the youth/reserve team coming through and we need a few experienced players like Mark Gower who can show the likes of Diego Poyet how to play as a central midfielder.

Yes, I wonder how many times in his life Diego Poyet's said to himself 'If only there was someone I could turn to for advice who was a decent midfielder'

    Exactly.

It seems a shrewd signing, doesn't show lack of ambition at all.
I'm not worried about the DM position any more.

Blimey, we've signed a player who helped play Swansea into the Premiership and played very well in our end of season run and it's not showing ambition? Why, because he's older? Did the re-introduction of Andy Hughes not show how important that kind of experience can be for a team, especially one that had so much trouble getting points and keeping leads at home? Ambitious would be signing Leo Messi, but he's a bit out of our price range I fear. Mark's a realistic signing for us and he's signed based on showing good ability for Charlton last season. I know it's nice to bring in exciting marquee signings by signing big names but it doesn't always work that well - just ask QPR. I'm really pleased to have Gower onboard
  • Good signing. Can just see him being interviewed on the Wembley pitch in a Charlton shirt this time next year, saying how great it is to win another play off final (first one with Swansea)
