Completing the 92

edited April 2013 in General Charlton
Last night at Cardiff I completed the current 92 grounds.I finished visiting the 92 clubs last month when I saw Accrington Stanley play Fleetwood.

Any others on the quest for this particular holy grail I recommend the website 'doing the 92' as it gives you the chance to create an electronic record of the games you have attended and it automatically records when grounds disappeared or teams got relegated,I discovered that Brighton was ground number 40 (Goldstone Ground),66 (Withdean Stadium) and 91 (Falmer) on my journey. My complete total of grounds where I have I have seen league football is 130.

I originally followed the Addicks to London away games with my Dad in the late 70's but this project really developed between 1981 and 1990 by which time I had reached 58 grounds. The oldest unique visit was Oldham in 1982 when we drew 2-2 despite many opportunities through the years the delights of Boundary Park have not tempted me back.

In the next 19 years I only added another 7 grounds to that number because of ground moves and relegations to the Conference mainly cancelling out my new visits. At one stage I even contemplated joining some Orient friends at the odd away game to boost my numbers, but during many seasons during this period I actually saw the number decrease.

On relegation to League One four years ago I decided to make a positive out of the situation and seriously resurrect my 92 ambition. At the time of our promotion last season my figure had reached 80 which was always the figure I had in mind when I would start to attend neutral games to complete my 'set',so this season I gave my self a target of a ground a month knowing I had Brighton and Cardiff this month to round it off with the Addicks. Originally I would have preferred to have ended at Falmer, but as it turned out it was nice to be present at Cardiff's promotion party.

  • I'm still some way off, stuck on 49 until next season :(
  • Congrats mate. I'm on a pretty good total but have literally no interest in seeing a neutral game in this country. Start ticking off some foreign grounds, that's the way forward.
  • 87/92. Fleetwood, Rotherham (Saw them at Don Valley), Morecambe, Accrington and Rochdale to go.

Looking likely that I could lose 2 league grounds at the end of the season (league 2 relegated sides) but hoping Grimsby can get promoted via the play offs in the conference. Also Barnet moving from Underhill to the Hive from next season.

Well done Richard on hitting 92.
  • Well done RJ.

Is there still a 92 club to join?
  • great achievement RJ, my son wants to do it.

as we speak, that Cardiff baby is on his 27th ground.
  • A little way to go yet as i'm on 80
  • What's the most people have done purely with Charlton?

One (the only?) small consolation of our recent lean period was the opportunity to add grounds for those so inclined.
  • I've only ever done two other grounds not with Charlton both were with Brighton. One was Lincoln City who are in the Conference and the other was Rotherhams old ground at Millmoor.

    There is

But they're really strict, if a club drops out, but re-enters the league, you have to visit again! So I'm afraid you'll have to go back to Grimsby, if as i'm guessing, you've already been. Also they want all the stats, lineups, attendance score etc.
Weirdly, you can watch an international, say One of those Brazil V Russia games at QPR, and claim Loftus road as a ground you've visited

So you are on 78 with Charlton then if I've read you right.

I think that will take some beating.

I think there is,but it's rules were quite strange, for example they would not include my Oxford Kassam Stadium trip because it was before they had a spell in the Conference.

I would be interested in this I have done about 15 neutral games which include the likes of Chesterfield and Shrewsbury which are grounds we have played on.

I didn't count them in my 80 as they aren't current league grounds otherwise i could include Hereford/Cambridge & Stockport

  • I think Essex Addick had done 100+ different grounds with Charlton but including friendlies.

Actually I've done you out of a ground because Lincoln aren't in the league at the moment which I temporarily forgot.

    So you have 79.

First team friendlies count according to 'doing the 92'
  • 62 with charlton would be higher but a few teams have moved.
  • 57/92 for me.
    70 grounds in total.

Including friendlies against non-league teams I've been to 86 with Charlton, I think. I'm pretty sure @Stewart can beat that, we've both done pretty well considering I'm 26 and he's just a few years older.

Overall I've been to 117, a few of times a year I go abroad plus when I went backpacking in South America I managed to get to 10. Footballgroundmap.com is decent for all your geeky groundhopper needs.

Old Trafford,I think this is influenced by my first visit when I saw Mark Stuart score the winner for us.

  • Great effort RJ. I am on about 65 but under the '92 rules' that would be reduced due to teams being relegated to Conference or moved.

Living abroad now I don't expect any time soon to complete the set. Maybe when I retire.
  • Henry jnr is on about 35 which isnt bad for a 14 year old.

I was there for that too. I have similar sentiments for my favourite being White Hart Lane when we got them in the FA Cup 84/5, my first away game and nicked a 1-1 draw against a very good Spurs side at the time.
  • On about 63 at the moment getting there

I'm on about 78 i think. Good memories of both of these, as first visits, but Spurs has remained a favourite since in to the modern era. The new design of White Hart Lane has kept something unique and likeable for me.

I only count grounds where i've seen Charlton play and would probably disagree with any rule of thumb about having to re-visit new grounds to count them. e.g. Reading's Elm Park counts in my book whether you have been to the Madjeski or not.
  • I keep a rough count (50-60) & being something of a fair-weather away traveller (confession Oohaah..) am not making any specific effort to get to them all. But this got me thinking about grounds which you haven't been to for a very long time (OP mentioned Oldham). Mine would be West Brom, not been since '75 I think.

As for neutral games which add to the tally (i.e. not seen Charlton play there), strangest one for me was a 70s friendly between Blackpool and Saudi Arabia. I suspect I'm the only one in this forum who was at that match

Well done Richard, you're more dedicated than me.

I'm in the low 80's for grounds attended & did expect at some future date, to make the 92.

However, with all the new grounds & relegations to The Conference, it's becoming increasingly difficult.

I can't see myself ever schleping up to the likes of Morecambe or Accrington to see them play Fleetwood or Burton, in order to complete the 92.

I'm sad, but not that sad. (No offence intended).

Even once you've done it, it will be undone within a year or two.

Anyway, who am I gonna tell, apart from CL? Who cares ?
  • Don't think I'll ever complete the 92 following Charlton.

I've now seen us play at 77 of the current 92 league grounds

I've seen us play at an additional 26 league grounds that no longer exist

I've seen us play at an additional 9 grounds that are no longer in the league

  • Well done RJ
  • Mid 70's for me but have lost Maidstone, Grimsby, Lincoln, Stockport, Cambridge & Luton. Also only been the old grounds for Shrewsbury, Oxford. Northampton, Brighton and the odsal for Bradford.
