Such a Charlton thread! Saying going up would do us more harm than good is the same as the stupid statement when were in Prem "Maybe a drop down to the Championship for a season will do us good so we can re-group" For goodness sake at least show some ambition rather than just accepting our inherent mediocrity.
Excellent post. After looking over our shoulders for most of the season, looking at teams above understandably seems a bit strange. Its very unlikely we would reach the play-offs, but, win at Cardiff followed by Wolves and our last two games and a wobble by those expected all season to gain automatic promotion and we would go into the play-offs full of confidence. All very unlikely - but its been achieved before.
The higher we can finish the better. If we finish 8th, which I think is achievable, just, then I will be ecstatic. Ninth, which is where we are now, would also be fantastic. What I don't want is to fall apart now that we are as good as safe.
The defining positions, for me, are safe, top half, top ten and then playoffs. If we hit the top ten I can't see any complaints being justified, but that is not justification for us giving up on the playoffs. Another massive game (playoff semi) would be very welcome, even if we don't make the final.
Lets not be too sensible and enjoy the moment whilst we're on a good run. In football you have to take your chances when they come. That applies to getting promotions, just as much as to scoring goals. We probably won't make the play-offs because our winning streak has come so late, but you never know. Enjoy the moment, dream about the possibilities and take your chances. If we do achieve the play-offs it will be nothing short of fantastic; if we don't, then we still haven't lost anything in a season where safety/consolidation was the aim.
Couldnt we technically be safe already? Theres so many teams below us most of them must still have to play other teams below us, surely its not possible for them all to catch us up anyway
If 'sensible' means we go back to the Curbs era of "we're safe, so foot off the gas", then no thanks. Certainly don't want the players to feel that vibe on Tues evg. We've only a tiny chance of the play-offs, but why not go for it?
As stonewall pointed out, if sense had anything to do with it we'd not bother with this crazy game in the first place...

Agree 100%
Why can't we be a bit optimistic? I'm not saying we're going to make the play-offs at all. But why not at least give it a good go ? gives us something to fight for and make it an exciting end to the season.
Also this crap about we are not ready for the premiership is possibly the biggest pile of tosh ive ever heard, lets be honest it can only do the club good finacially and bring back a few fans to the club. Also ask yourself one thing who would you rather see at the valley .. Barnsley, burnley, ipswich ? Or United, Manchester City, Arsenal ? Charlton will always be ready for the Premeir league that's where we belong.

Totally Agree I listened to an interview with Andy Hughes some weeks ago and was impressed with his attitude and positivity. I'm certain he has not given up reaching the play offs.

I just did the predictor up until the final day of the season. First I put all four Charlton games as 1-0 losses. Any games between the two teams above us (eg Leicester vs. Bolton) I put as 0-0 draws as they wouldn't effect our relegation chances. Any game with a team below us against a team above us (eg Wolves vs. Hull) I put as a 1-0 win to the team below us. Any game between two teams below us (eg Blackpool vs Sheff W) I put as a 1-0 for the team with fewer points. The one exception to that is Bristol City, who cannot catch us. Leaving scores as 0-0 and 1-0 has as little effect on goal difference as possible. Here's what I got with one game left to play:
You might be wondering if I have anything better to be doing with my Sunday afternoon. The answer is no. :-)
id say we have an 8 - 12% chance of Playofffs ... if we had to do it ten times we would get there once...
Do you mean that you think we'd make it once in every ten attempts if we win all our remaining games? Only I think that's a little optimistic. If you meant we would make it once in every ten attempts without the prerequisite of winning all our games I fear you have miscalculated the probabilities.
Winning has never been a problem for any football team.
If you get up, you try and stay up. The biggest mistake Clubs make is sacking the manager who got you there as the Directors/owners actually believe they can stay there without putting in a huge lump and having a huge slice of luck.
I said at the begining of the season that if we went down then SCP would be the best man to bring us up again as he had proved he can do it and anyone else would be unproven.
Happy to stay in this league. Happy if we go up. Happy if we will be solvent!

Yeah if we won all games we would get in play offs once out of 10 attempts IE all the results would go or way...

If you check this web site you'll see that a simulation has us with a 34% chance of finishing top six if we win all our remaining games. However, I think it is unlikely that we will achieve that.
I just cant see how the hell getting into the playoffs could do us harm! We’re in a competition and getting a better finishing place, will harm us? No, no, no, no, if and I do mean if, we got into the playoffs it would bring in some extra dosh, that is never a bad thing now is it? The only thing that could do us harm is us fans getting carried away with it all thinking we’re big time Charlie’s again.
We have four games left and some of those are very winnable (not saying which :P);
Cardiff (away) will be very nervous on Tuesday and this could go either way, as I’ve said on another thread the first goal is going to be very important. I think Cardiff have the best home record in the league this season, no game is easy but, the situation gives us a better chance and we are no mugs away from home.
Wolves (home) it has to be said, we are the worst team at home in the league. Wolves are well and truly in that scrap at the bottom and again nerves will play a part and our confidence is sky high.
Middlesbrough (away) their recent form is dreadful, nonetheless the last home game in an awful season that promised so much at the start.
Bristol (home) their relegation will probably be settled by then and if we have won the last three then the pressure will be on us and Bristol will be relaxed. It’ll be down to us fans not to let it get too tense.
If we win all four games I think we have a good shout at the playoffs, otherwise no chance. Winning all four games is not beyond us but, we have not strung five wins together all season, lets be honest it is a big, big ask but, why do we come to football if not to dream. This is what the playoffs are all about, this is why the league is so very tight, despite being newbie’s to the division and having indifferent form at times we are in with a shout and long may it continue.
If we got into the playoffs (a massive IF), I would not care a jot if we lost in the playoffs or in the final, except of course if we were pitted against that lot from Surrey. All of a sudden it would take on a whole new imperative.
To have any chance of the playoffs we'd need to win all four games and hope that Leicester, Bolton and Forest only win two or less of their remaining fixtures which I really don't think is going to happen. Nice to be talking about it at this time of year though !
