Every club has a song about others for example its not acceptable to call us trainspotters anoraks retards etc, but it happens.
In that case would you say it's acceptable to sing songs at Bradford or Coventry City regarding the large proportion of ethnicity in their respective cities?
Where is the comparison between trainspotting and homophobia?
"Does your boyfriend know you're here" and the "We can see you holding hands" have been sang to Brighton every time we play them and will probably be sang tomorrow night. This is mild banter and Charlton have never been known to sing extremely offensive chants en-masse very often.

Well I won't be singing them tomorrow night. If I was gay it would piss me off hearing that everytime. Banter is just an excuse. It's no wonder there are no openly gay footballers in the football league.

Singing about opposition supporters holding hands is banter. Similarly if we sing about northerners being unemployed (we pay your benefits), about welsh people enjoying inapproriate relations with sheep, or northerners having strange accents. Far less offensive than say the Addams Family song...
I wouldn't consider "Does your boyfriend know you're here" homophobic anyway, as it's not attacking gay people in any way. Should singing "Does your mother know you're here" to a young looking player be banned for being ageist?

Fatty's getting fatter... Dirty northern bastards... He's got no hair but we don't care... We can see you holding hands... In your Nottingham slums... Does your mother know you're here...
I see the Referees Association have now complained that not all their members are illigitemate, though a good percentage of them do masturbate regularly.
Glad Graham Poll has remained silent on the matter.

Ban the lot of them I say.
Thatcher's fault for sure.
Excellent point and not Thatchers fault. A lot of things were her fault though!
I think the key is around causing offence. That can sometimes be around your sentiments. I can tell a gay joke to a gay mate who I know will find it funny, because he knows there is no malicious sentiment behind it. If I did it to somebody I know wouldn't or purposely did it to offend, that is a different matter.
Matt Lucas found the chant funny -as in a recent program. If it is done with a smile and no hatred and not overdone, it isn't the worst thing in the world. Of course it isn't very original now! If I kept telling my mate the same gay joke, he might start not seeing it as being so funny.
There must be a big number of gay players out there who are too afraid to come out. In the 21st century, that isn't very funny!
Let's hope we don't sing "we hate palace more than you" both sets of supporters could get in trouble for racist behaviour (I regard them as a different race and definitely not human) political correctness gone absolutely crazy. How can singing about holding hands be homophobic, in fact im sure many heterosexual couples will be holding hands in the home end.
My 8 year old son who was studying his Fantasy Football league, has obviously overheard the BBC link, as he just burst out "does your boyfriend know you're here?" pointing at me.
Look there are certain things like racism that should not be tolerated. BUT, we have become so PC in this country that you can't do much without offending someone. AND, are you seriously trying to tell me that all those interviewed have never chanted anything remotely sensitive ?? I doubt it very much....
So the conclusion of the thread seems to be 'look I have to bite my lip and be nice to black people, so let me carry on being a homophobic, cause where's the fun'?

Not saying its right, but anyone who thinks that such chants from a bunch of Charlton supporters are malicious and 'homophobic' really are quite precious.
If anything it is taking the piss out of the ridiculous stereotype that they have.

Looks that way.
I don't want to be condescending, but I am genuinely supprised at the number of fans thinking singing these songs is acceptable.
My impression of the Brighton fans on the bus, is that they were all 'straight' and fed up with the cliche that people from Brighton are all gay. So perhaps it's them who are a bit homophobic :-)

Soon we will be scared to sing or do anything because some person might think your being racist or homophoic. It's a bit of light hearted banter ffs.

Is it illegal to refer to someone being gay if they are gay ?
Is it illegal to refer to someone being gay if they are not gay ?
If this reference to being gay is not discriminatory is it still illegal / legal ?
