Jumping ship just when you're needed the most

God, I'm sick of the amount of people on here that have talked about not renewing their S/T's and or not going again this season or maybe only once etc.

We may well be in the shit & too many seem to want to turn their backs, instead of helping Chris & the boys pull through.

This set of players are nothing like the bunch of no triers we had at the end of The Prem years.

This squad lack quality not effort.

Please get behind them ffs. Your club needs you now !

Charlton 'til I die.

  • Well said, CE
  • I have no problem with the team or manager. It's football in general and the depressing state of our club that's doing for me.

  • Welling are doing well this season.

So the state of our club will improve or get worse by people bailing out ?
  • Well said CE. This group of players and the manager care more than any others we've had recently. They don't deserve us to abandon them because some idiots in the board room don't know how to run a football club.

Let's get behind them, they deserve it even if the rest of the club don't
  • Im not renewing, but thats because my shit part time job stops me going

    Problem?

Get a job as a matchday steward, MattD !

Not at all. There's a big difference between being unable to & choosing not to, because the team are losing.
  • It's funny how the goodwill from last season has gone so quickly.

Last season was a dream, pretty much a one-off. I think it has spoilt a few Charlton fans. This season is 'normal'. We will finish mid-table, and that means losing a lot more games than last season. The fact that a disproportionate number of those defeats have come at home, unfortunately, means that this disillusionment is greater than it might have been.

This club is in a much better position than it was two years ago. You kept going then, even when we were losing to Walsall and Dagenham & Redbridge in League 1. Why give up now?

  • Think people are still angry and pissed off with the debacle that was yesterday with the off field shit far out weighing the result on the pitch. People will calm down and hopefully realise that now is not the time to abandon the team. There might be an upsurge in ill will towards the board and quite possibly justified but we as fans have to remember that the team are not yet safe. Chris and the lads need us.

I think you're simplifying it all. I think there are many more reasons as to why people will not renew than the results. Some financial, some family, some other very specific reasons.

What I think you are confusing is that group, and I've been in this group in the past, that say they are going to stop coming when they fell very hurt and/or angry about a specific result.

The club are guilty (as are the fans) of building up certain games to the point where the result becomes so important that we must all accept some fall out if the team loses. Yesterday was just one of those games.

Even though I wasn't angry I was very, very disappointed. In all honesty I think we played well and Millwall looked poor and/or tired. We just didn't get the goal then they got one against the run of play.

I don't have any criticisms of the club, manager or the players, but I still feel most disappointed about the result.

I suspect that most of those that are saying they will stop coming are just venting and they will be back for Bolton and they will renew if they can.
  • As others have rightly pointed out, the Board and the players/manager are 2 different issues.

Whatever else your feelings, support the latter.
  • KHA, with all due respect, I'm not confused at all. I'm simply commenting on the amount of people that have posted on here in the last 24 hours, saying that they are not going again this season or maybe once &/or are not renewing their S/T's because we're not playing attractive enough football & keep losing.

Where I think the confusion lies is that I don't think they are going to stop going, I just think that they feel better for telling the world that they are.

You came across as critical of people withdrawing their support which I don't think they will do in the end I think they are just saying they will.

Anyway I might have phrased my comment better to I apologise.
  • I personally don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks. How I spend my money and (far more valuable to me) my time is no-one else's business but my own. Having gone for 30 odd years (and paid to go myself for the last 25 of them), sacrificing time with my wife and family I don't have to justify my actions to anybody else. If I decide to go back next year it will be my decision. Those decisions will not be influenced by how much (or how little) a bunch of people I don't know 'need' or don't 'need' my support, financial or otherwise - nor will they be influenced by someone posting on an internet forum. Those decisions WILL be influenced by things like:

Being treated like a cunt by other 'fans' of 'my' club.
Being treated like a cunt by the people who run 'my' club
Being embarrassed to be associated with some of the parasites I've seen more and more of at the Valley over the last few years
Finding other things that I enjoy doing more
Not being able to justify shelling out nigh on 50 quid a week for about eight minutes of enjoyment

This is nothing to do with the team being shit. Lord alone knows I've put up with shit teams before. Those teams had players that weren't earning a tenth of what the players are earning now - but I'm pragmatic enough to realise that the money floating around in football is silly now - so it isn't envy either.

I just don't really enjoy it much any more.

Quite. I'm not sure what's worse. Blabbing I'm not going, I'm not renewing, when you know you will, or actually doing what you are saying.

Surely, no one supports Charlton for the glory ?

It's my team, I support them through thick and thin.

I'm Charlton not Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U.

We lose a lot, that's what we do.

I agree with nearly all that you say Leroy, except one point.

You say "how I spend my money and (far more valuable to me) my time is no-one else's business but my own."

But up to a point you've made it not your own by starting a thread about it.

Anyway, you're a good lad, so I'll leave it there, as we're all uptight.

Hope you feel differently in a week or so. Just change seats mate. I never have the problems you seem to get.

    All the best.

Yet you come on here and rant and rave about it?

If you don't want to come, then don't come, simple. Why you need to make a big song and dance about it, I don't really know.

The whole "players earn too much" argument is tedious and done to death by the modern football supporter. Let's not make this something about the players when quite clearly the main thing you have got the hump about are some fucking idiots amongst our support spouting absolutely vile stuff and the owners whose policies you disagree with.

It needs to be highlighted. Or, if people who have been going thirty years are that fucked off that they're considering not going next year, does no-one think that signals a problem?

And Tom - I'm not sure why you've highlighted the point about players earning too much - since I went out of my way to state that wasn't one of the reasons I'm so fucked off with it?
  • Mad dog optimistic.
  • Indeed you did - apologies.

Half of the fans have been going since before we left for Selhurst... perhaps we should weigh up all of the reasons people are starting to lose it and find some solutions?

  • Covered End for Chair of the Supporters Trust. Or the Club.

    Or preferably both.
  • It's got nothing to do with what the teams been like on the pitch its the way I've been treated .if you had a favorite pub /resturant u went to as a regular and u was treated like we were on Saturday would you go back.
    I know I certainly wouldnt!
the next home attendace will prove my point by looking at the empty stands(not the figure they give out).
  • Nan said to be yesterday , don't you worry don't you worry child
  • What Leroy said.

45 years plus ---i have paid my dues a 1000 times over.

    Its not fun anymore

I will go when i feel like it not because some says i owe it to this club-----i owe them fuck all.
  • CE, well said.

CP and the players earned my loyalty last season. This club had been dismal for years and in terminal decline, then wham everything changed. We won games, a lot of games and it was great to say I was a Charlton supporter without people looking at me with sympathy.

The players are what they are and we don't have the money to pay for stupid wages and loan fees, grow up people and do your bit.
  • I can't remember a season that I have enjoyed as little as this though (as away games are out for me), even when we were a worst team under Pardew/Reed/Dowie.

It's not about the racism (I don't hear any), the board, the new brand of supporters we have or Ricardo Fuller, it's about what am I going get entertainment wise for £440 next season and can that money be better spent partially doing other things (I would still go occasionally).

Some would rather go down with CP that stay up without him.

Irrespective of the manager, if we are to go down I'd at least like to be entertained when being rolled over at The Valley every other week.
