Im thinking back to last season mainly the first half and I remember us playing nice football. Fair enough maybe when kerms came into the team we started to put it in the air a bit more but to say our football last season was shyte is ballacks in my honest opinion.
Take a little look on you tube at our goals from aug 11 to jan 12. Our goals say it all.
So to say we didnt play nice football last year is total pants
I made the videos you are referring too and I think our play deteriorated as the season progressed, at the beginning we did pass the ball nicely. I think it kind coincides with the signing of Kermo and dropping Hayes, we played a style of football needed to get out of league one. Unfortunately we are keeping with that format, it's not pretty but hopefully it will be enough to stay in the championship.
Kind of inevitable with the same players. To be fair I thought we played some decent stuff at times yesterday, certainly wasn't all hoof ball by any means. Just after the second the game was gone.
I've began taking my 7year old this season. Although I can't fully understand it, I feel this huge responsibility to ensure the he and latterly his younger brother are our fans of the future. This isn't easy living in Essex where all his mates are spam. It is becoming a right struggle even for me to be enthusiastic, hoof ball and a defeat, poor boys only seen one win. If we go down I don't know if I can put him through it. The father and son time is brilliant but it's proving a challenge to explain to a 7 year why we can't pass the ball to each other.
Agree with Brentwood Mark, I live in Shenfield and have been taking my 10 year old for four seasons now and recently he hasn't wanted to go, the football has been shocking.
Teacher: "And what did you do at the weekend Johnny?" Little Johnny: " I went to a gay bar to see my Dad pole-dancing" Teacher: "Don't lie Johnny, that's very bad - I saw you and your Dad at Charlton."!
I really wish I lived closer to Charlton like I used to because I could happily watch todays performance over and over (at least the first 60 odd minutes).
I don't care if we're not Barcelona or whatever people seem to want us to aspire to (Swansea?) because I genuinely love the majority of our team. Jackson, Kermorgant, Solly, Morrison, Wiggins, Pritchard etc are the most likeable and hard working bunch of players we've had in years and in all honesty I don't care if we don't ever make an FA cup semi final in my life time... or if we end up finishing just above the relegation zone in the Championship for the rest of my life... because I'd rather watch these type of players, who on the most part seem to genuinely care, than the likes of Marcus Bent or any other mercenary we could get in to "improve" our style of play. Not to mention the manager, who in my eyes is Curbs.v2 and I wouldn't swap him for anyone.
I cannot understand anyone who questions the teams effort. We have a team of hard workers and I would take that any day of the week in any division. I would love us to have a bit more quality and be able to play attractive attacking football but I didn't start following Charlton because of our style of play and I certainly won't stop following them because of it.
Great post - but I do understand some fans' frustration. I thought we were well on top for the first 60 mins, that lot yesterday were big, slow and second best. I also think they looked resigned to the game but after they scored it was game over for us, they just parked up and let us run out of steam. I've got no complaints with any particular player, we were just undone by a pretty average team. But, the pitch is a disgrace and stops our game - I've read somewhere that it was the volunteers clearing snow who also took the grass off, if that's the real case then someone's arse needs to be in a sling.
When CP took over as manager we had just finished in our lowest ever league position for half a century. I recall from the "Powell out" threads that some people were all for showing him the exit a month or two after he arrived. The folly of that approach was demonstrated a year later with our best ever season. Very few clubs have totalled 90 plus points in a year and only a very few have made it to three figures.
So perhaps expectations ran ahead of themselves for this season? Did we really expect free flowing attacking football and all from a squad that is collectively (bar one or two examples) stepping up a league?
The reality is that we haven't had a bad season - we are mid-table and doing better than the other two teams promoted with us last year. What we are missing is a bit of footballing nous, knowing how to win hard games by getting a late goal or holding on to a narrow lead. That will come but it's a collective thing that the team needs to suss out.
We've had virtually no inward investment this year and we need to bring in a goal scorer and a midfield general as part of getting that strong central spine around which everything flows. But compared to where we were two seasons ago at this time - we are light years ahead. The success now crowd won't get this but who cares.
I don't buy into all this about Powell staying loyal to the players he brought in. Those players were bought for the sole purpose of getting us out of league 1. I'm pretty damn sure he was expecting more investment in the team during the summer, but as that didn't happen, he's had to make do with what he's got.
Can't understand those saying CP should go. The club allowed him to go and get the tools to get us out of L1 last season and he done just that. This season however, they've not provided him with the resources to compete in this division (remember Slater said the aim for this season was mid-table) and despite this, we're still keeping our heads above water (for now). So, my opinion is he's doing a bloody good job with what he has available to him.
And despite my admiration and 100% support for the man, I'm not sitting here wearing my charlton glasses. If the board were to give him a decent budget this summer, and he wasted it and we were to sit through another season of dross, then I would be one of the first to say "Time for a change". That time however, is NOT now.......................

This. I started taking my daughter last season and out of the 9 away games she came to, she saw 7 SEVEN wins, a draw and defeat at Hudds. This season she's been to Forest, Wednesday and Huddersfield. Living in Sheffield it's hard to encourage a kid to support 'little Charlton' when their peers support local clubs. But i persevere as my dad did. My first game was at Mansfield town in 77-78 season as a 6 year old. Win, lose or draw, Charlton are my team and now hers. Last season was 'my' most enjoyable ever. I saw one defeat from 14 away games. I doubt i'll ever see a season like that again. Attractive football is great and i love to see it, but winning and cellebrating goals fills up the soul.
The step up this year to Championship level is massive (as even the massive have found). Many thought we would struggle and i remember someone posting on the forum in the summer that we were one of the favourites for relegation. We've done ok and held our own against established clubs and there are still enough clubs below us which on the surface appear wealthier, for me to feel heartened about this season. We we're always going to have to fight to stay up. So far it's not as desperate a fight as i had feared. Powell is a top manager, managing an at best average squad for this league. If we finish mid-table it will be job done. Maybe next season things will improve, maybe not but stability is still the goal. Getting promotion again with this squad is not going to happen. Powell was able to assess his squad in his first season and make monumental changes over the summer to build for the next level. IF he is given backing from the owners, maybe he can do it again.
As many sung last season, 'We've got our Charlton back.' Charlton are a bit like a scruffy naughty little dog that runs away and doesn't do tricks very often, you don't just get rid because there are other bigger better looking dogs with more tricks out there, because you have that inner belief that your dog needs you and you need them. This is my Charlton and I love them and i'll keep coming back!
So people wanted passing attractive football from L1 players on league 1 wages?
What they got were a L1 team on L1 wages that played effective football and pissed the league with record points.
Now that L1 team is competing (we are 14th) in the championship with minimal strengthening on a dogshit pitch and people question the football being played??? I don't know what you are expecting!! I'd love to see us knock it about and create chances through good football but I just don't think it's possible with the players CP has at his disposal. He can't be blamed for that in my eyes as I think he's been let down in terms of funds for strengthening. He's doing a decent job with what he's got.
Are you trying to say that our budget is lower and players are worse than most Championship sides. Millwall didn't exactly bring a team of internationals............or many others that have played at the Valley this season. The style of football has to be down to the manager. The most obvious area that we could have done with improving (last summer) is a experienced creative midfield player. We found the money for Fuller who has for the most part proven to be a disappointment, maybe with hindsight that money could have been better spent elsewhere.
Are you trying to say that our budget is lower and players are worse than most Championship sides. Millwall didn't exactly bring a team of internationals............
I'm not sure what your point is, until yesterday Millwall were below us in the CCC, and now are only a point or so ahead of us, they have hardly been playing brilliantly all season. Statistically they are about where we are but they have had the benefit of a having had a couple of seasons in this league since they got promoted.
Are you trying to say that our budget is lower and players are worse than most Championship sides. Millwall didn't exactly bring a team of internationals...........
But do you think they looked any better than us? 2 teams devoid of confidence, a game with minimal chances and just 2 very poor teams in general. They got the breaks, we didn't............
It's so much hard work hauling myself down to The Valley these days. I don't do aways these days. I'm fed up with the "we don't get the breaks" excuse. We are nothing short of appalling in style and substance in front of our own fans. The squad is weak at Championship level and CP has won enough points for us to go into the final furlong with a real chance of remaining in this division but something has to change next season. Without investment in the team I don't think I can face another season like this one. I swear I can't.
There are good reasons our home form is so bad, there is blame to be passed around amongst many I am sure. But whatever the reason may be, we are utterly, totally crap at the Valley. Away performances indicate that CP and the team have got what it takes, but I haven't got the time or money to follow them around the country, much as I would love to be able to. If this looked like a pattern for seasons to come, I would certainly not pay for a season ticket, I would use that money to see more away games and some actual football from players in the Charlton shirts.
This is exactly what I've been saying all season. We didn't play nice football last year, we aren't playing nice football this year. Its just not enjoyable to watch.
Don't get me wrong I love charlton, but I work hard for my money, I don't want to sit through 90 minutes of complete dross, watching us get outplayed every week even when we somehow do end up winning.
I honestly would be happy if we lost but attempted to play proper stylish football but for the last two and abit years of watching charlton there must have been a couple of games were I have been impressed by the way we have played , no more.
One game that springs to mind from last year was colchester away were we played great football.
'We didn't play nice football last year' What are you on? To say we didn't play nice football last season is beyond a joke, we played excellent for most of the season last year. We went a bit off towards the end but if you compare this to Phil Parkinson's team then I would say I prefer Powell's team all day long, I really don't know what you expected last year?
As for this season, we should have invested on new players and I would be satisfied if we finish mid-table because some of the players have showed themselves they can not hack it in the Championship. No other manager will do any better than Powell with the squad we have got.

We did play some decent stuff last year, but there were a lot of games where we took 3 points with real battling displays to win by the odd goal which showed real character from the players ,but with no real investment this was always going to be a tough season.

That is exactly what I am trying to say, we did not get 101 because of luck, we worked hard and well to get it. I really don't understand what some fans expected from last year, we are not going to put a in 'wonderful' display every game.
To be honest, I don't care if we play boring football every game as long as we bring massive success from that.

I think CP is doing well with the resources available, that said the football at home this season has been the worst for years, some teams (Notts Forest) are clearly better than us, others (Millwall, Sheff Wed) are clearly no better yet we struggle - something has to change at home or the crowds will disappear. I will renew my season ticket but I am fed up walking up the hill after the game thinking what a waste of time...!
I will probably renew but tbh I have had enough of our home displays. I have no idea why they are so different to our away displays.
Clearly a lot of people can't be bothered with it anymore by the state of our crowd, I could not believe how empty it was and the price increase for next year will only make it worse.
Maybe it feels worse after the millwall game because I go for the following reasons,
A beer before and after game A good laugh/atmosphere To see effort and some goal chances on the pitch
Except effort until Millwall scored none of these were present. The crowd was full of utter tw@ts on saturday I saw bottles thrown from M block NU twice, I thought I was in Millwall end. In complete contrast to various away games this year including Millwall away.
I must admit, I wasn't expecting to see us win every game at the Valley, but only 4 wins at this stage of the season is beyond poor, with the squad that we have. What I am looking for now, are some signs that this is a one off and next season will be better.
If you really don't like it that much and are finding it that much of a chore then don't go. It really is that simple.
In the meantime the rest of us will do our best to keep the club going so you can always choose to return at some point, maybe for a big cup game or a promotion push.
