Just an honest opinion...

Just an Honest opinion….
I’ve been back in blighty now since end of 2011, and been going back to the Valley albeit not as a regular, as work dictates that I am 100 miles away from SELondon, since Jan 2012. I’ve been to probably about 15 home games in that time and prob about 7 away games.
Just being honest here, but I cant say I’ve really enjoyed our performances that much – now, I know what you are thinking , and probably about to say, in that ffs we got over 100 points last season. But, being honest,we didn’t play very good football in that time – and we certainly aint playing very good football this season. I certainly don’t see any difference in the way we play now as to the way we played in the latter half of last season (generally hoofball).
Now, BryanKinsie came out with a very good comment earlier tonight..
‘This would have been an ok season if we had won a cup game, a local derby and half a dozen home games. What the f*ck do we go for? To watch hoof ball and to "stay up" in the Championship? If that's all we aspire to what's the point?’
Which sortta sums it all up for me.
I am just really concerned that supporters might be getting the 'ump with all this and deciding to part with their well-earned money elsewhere next season rather than put up with all this rubbish that’s dished for them every other week. For example, I get home tonight, and my 18 year old turns round to me and says ‘ I don’t want to go next time’.
I don’t want to say it ,as I love CP, but maybe a change in management might be the way forward – as I cant see that another season of this turgid shite is going to 1) be acceptable or 2)keep us in the league next season or certainly 3) Entice my son (and this is very important to me, as its mine and his heritage-I want him to come to the Valley with his kids when I am sitting in The great Valley in the sky) to come back and keep the Charlton line going.
Just an honest opinion.

  • Agree that a huge part of football is to be entertained, but are our players good enough to play a passing game in this league? Unfortunately Powell is left to using the most effective system (long ball) with the crap we've got.

But its the 'crap' HE brought in.
  • This is exactly what I've been saying all season. We didn't play nice football last year, we aren't playing nice football this year.
Its just not enjoyable to watch.

Don't get me wrong I love charlton, but I work hard for my money, I don't want to sit through 90 minutes of complete dross, watching us get outplayed every week even when we somehow do end up winning.

I honestly would be happy if we lost but attempted to play proper stylish football but for the last two and abit years of watching charlton there must have been a couple of games were I have been impressed by the way we have played , no more.

One game that springs to mind from last year was colchester away were we played great football.
  • I'm sure we all want to watch attractive football. We just don't have the money to fund it.

I'd rather be swimming along midtable in the championship waiting for our chance than to be back down in League 1.
  • Fucking ridiculous. Without the players CP brought in we wouldnt even be in this league, we'd be battling to get into thr L1 playoffs if we were lucky.

You say in this league? But were you really impressed by the passing game we had last year?

I honestly don't agree with the fact we have to spend money to attempt to play good football.

Did brighton spend loads when they were in league 1? Always remembered them playing nice football
  • Curbs took 7 years to conquer this division , we need to show a lot of patience , its not pretty but with a crap pitch and limited resources this season is all about staying up , keep the faith.
  • Said today to Ross, just want this season finished, I'm bored and don't look forward to going anymore, ruderless on and off the pitch.
  • Just an honest opinion from me.............Powell brought his own players in and we strolled last season. All on the back of a Jenkinson move. We have no money, and are where we are on last season's players.

Who the f*** do you think can do better, absolutely clueless some people are

Im thinking back to last season mainly the first half and I remember us playing nice football. Fair enough maybe when kerms came into the team we started to put it in the air a bit more but to say our football last season was shyte is ballacks in my honest opinion.

Take a little look on you tube at our goals from aug 11 to jan 12. Our goals say it all.

Saying we didnt play nice football last year is total pants

I made the videos you are referring too and I think our play deteriorated as the season progressed, at the beginning we did pass the ball nicely. I think it kind coincides with the signing of Kermo and dropping Hayes, we played a style of football needed to get out of league one. Unfortunately we are keeping with that format, it's not pretty but hopefully it will be enough to stay in the championship.

  • Yea it was pretty much when Hayes was dropped for kerm that we started to put it in the air a bit more but its so effing frustrating when kerm is actually very good with the ball at his feet
  • Im.with wheresmeticket on this one! Football is about winning match and last season we did that styalish or not and go out of league one!,now with the pitch being shite the footballs no better but we are mid table! And with gower waiting in the wings hopefully we are looking at next season to get good FOOTBALLERS in to the club

Exactly - I think Norwich and Southampton have given us silly expectation
  • I really wish I lived closer to Charlton like I used to because I could happily watch todays performance over and over (at least the first 60 odd minutes).

I don't care if we're not Barcelona or whatever people seem to want us to aspire to (Swansea?) because I genuinely love the majority of our team. Jackson, Kermorgant, Solly, Morrison, Wiggins, Pritchard etc are the most likeable and hard working bunch of players we've had in years and in all honesty I don't care if we don't ever make an FA cup semi final in my life time... or if we end up finishing just above the relegation zone in the Championship for the rest of my life... because I'd rather watch these type of players, who on the most part seem to genuinely care, than the likes of Marcus Bent or any other mercenary we could get in to "improve" our style of play. Not to mention the manager, who in my eyes is Curbs.v2 and I wouldn't swap him for anyone.

I cannot understand anyone who questions the teams effort. We have a team of hard workers and I would take that any day of the week in any division. I would love us to have a bit more quality and be able to play attractive attacking football but I didn't start following Charlton because of our style of play and I certainly won't stop following them because of it.
  • @Michaelmon = great post!
  • I swear we started hoofing it to Hayes before kerm came in?
  • I support Charlton cause they're (were) me local side, not because they're Premier League winners. In fact, I like nothing better than being in the company of Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea lads and watching em argue about who ix better, because when it comes round to me, well I'm little Charlton, but it's me local side. Saying all that, I still would like to see Charlton do well, especially in a derby game. To say we shouldn't make signings and srick with what we've got because we had a few wronguns a couple of seasons back is blaaady ludicrous. We need to push and aim higher imo, nothing wrong with a bit of success!

  • I've began taking my 7year old this season. Although I can't fully understand it, I feel this huge responsibility to ensure the he and latterly his younger brother are our fans of the future. This isn't easy living in Essex where all his mates are spam. It is becoming a right struggle even for me to be enthusiastic, hoof ball and a defeat, poor boys only seen one win. If we go down I don't know if I can put him through it. The father and son time is brilliant but it's proving a challenge to explain to a 7 year why we can't pass the ball to each other.
  • Look at it this way Mark, at least he's getting an early life lesson in mediocrity and disappointment.
  • Family sit behind me in the East. Mother, father, girl must be about seven, boy about nine or ten. Talk complete bollocks relentlessly, knock the seats with their feet. Constant smell of burgers, sweets , fizzy pop. But apart from all that they are the supporters pf the future. Girls sat yesterday on an iPod touch for 90 mins and for the first time the little lad said not very much at all. Clearly bored shitless. Even the father who spouts more garbage than Mount Etna was silent. Can only be a matter of time before the kids suggest that they would rather play with their Xbox on a Saturday! Bless em.

So people wanted passing attractive football from L1 players on league 1 wages?

What they got were a L1 team on L1 wages that played effective football and pissed the league with record points.

Now that L1 team is competing (we are 14th) in the championship with minimal strengthening on a dogshit pitch and people question the football being played??? I don't know what you are expecting!! I'd love to see us knock it about and create chances through good football but I just don't think it's possible with the players CP has at his disposal. He can't be blamed for that in my eyes as I think he's been let down in terms of funds for strengthening. He's doing a decent job with what he's got.

+2 And I believe that we'll limp over the safety line with a couple of games to spare. When you take into account everything that VG rightly says above we have to accept that survival is the aim this season. It just feels a bitter pill to swallow after yesterday. Our form away is still the third best in the league so the football we're playing on the road has been effective and successful. Take a step back and look at the bigger picture. It's certainly not all doom and gloom.
  • What would you be saying if we played attractive football but were in the bottom 3?

I don't have a problem with how we play, what shocks me is that some fans think we played amazing football to get out of the championship and appear shocked at how we are struggling. The mind boggles.

I think that the general feeling is that, as long as the team turn up and give 110%, then everyone goes home reasonably happy
