  • perhaps he has somebody viewing his house on Saturday.
  • Sadly it seems there has been a family problem
  • Or maybe he heard about the Policing arrangements after the game.

I always thought Jim was good at rattling defences - and, the sort of player you always wanted in your team not the opposition's.

Which famous defenders did he rattle most?

----update - just seen that it is postponed....oh well, it can wait until it happens. :-)
  • Jim is now due to be at the Leeds game ,so will ask the questions then
  • One of those guys, like Sir Clive, who just scored goals wherever he went.

The big question.....is it true he suffered badly with hay fever and it stopped him playing a few times?

    (Charlton urban myth No 33173a)
  • Do you prefer to be called Jim or Jimmy?

Do you mind me using your name?

Does it not bother you that you are not recognised as the fastest goalscorer in league football for a team not taking the kick-off?

Did you realise that that goal took only nine seconds?

If you had realised would you have put up nine fingers at the West Ham fans in much the same manner as I did at school on the Monday morning?

When we beat Leeds did you take the piss out of John Pearson?

In your honest opinion, was Leaburn crap?

Who was the best Charlton player you played with?

Would you have liked to play at The Valley?

Do you have any of your Panini stickers (like the one I, or you, famously use on Charlton Life)?

What was your most memorable Charlton goal?

What is your best memory of 29th May 1987 (do you remember the date or does the interviewer need to jog your memory?)

Did it hurt to lose The Full Member's Cup Final?

Did Lennie otherwise tell you as a team not to worry about the cups and concentrate on the league (perhaps adding that the only Charlton fans who care about the cups are Jimmy Melrose and nolly)?

How fitting! Maybe we win with 2 late goals.
  • Being told Jim is with us this weekend
  • Not a question, but clarification. I think Jim did play at the Valley but not for us. I'm sure he played there for Man City.

In this he joins the likes of Garth Crooks,Paul Miller and Andy Peake as players who played at the Valley but not for Charlton whereas others like Andy Jones never played in SE7 at all.

  • Was it him who had an allergy to grass?

Serious question, or was it somebody else I'm thinking of.
  • So what did he say?
  • The answers to the posed questions were

    No

    No

    Could've been.

    Yes

    Seventeen.

    I did , thanks

and finally , "because I felt it was the right decision at the time"
  • He said nothing, he backed out the day before

That's because he is not the real jimmymelrose.

  • I wonder if he backed out because there is an interview with him mainly about his time at Charlton in the new issue of the football retro magazine Backpass.

He tells the story of how by biting his cheek whilst eating a sausage roll nearly put him out of the play offs.

The move to Charlton came about when Lennie went to scout Alan Davies in a reserve game between Newcastle and Man City and ended up enquiring about Jim,he observed that he had complimented him a year earlier when City had beaten us at the Valley.

He said he settled in well partly because he knew some of our players like John Humphrey and Mark Reid,he saw his time with us as the most 'consistent and successful 'part of his career.Ultimately he moved on because he could not sell his home in Macclesfield and only seeing his family one day meant'something had to give'.

On the opposite page there is an article 'quick off the mark' and Jim's goal at Upton Park is remembered,he tells the story of how at a recent ex City players function the audience were confused when he told them that it was his career highlight rather than a 40 yard goal he had scored for them

Also in the issue of Backpass is an interview with another ex Addick Bobby Hunt primarily about his time at Colchester and on the back is a picture of Eddie Firmani and Graham Moore (although he was then with Chelsea) with Bobby Moore modelling headwear.Well worth buying for Addicks of a certain age.
  • I doubt the interview with Backpass has anything with our interview, he was due down as a guest of a supporter, but pulled out a couple of days before, our interview was just a small part of his day that was planned.
