goes without saying this division is tougher ,but if only we could get back to the way we saw out games last season how far could we go because in the main we are playing decent football. first half at palace was real quality.
Think oppo subs have more impact in this division. Powell tried to deal with Brum subs yesterday with his own subs, but it didn't quite come off. Zigic was the main reason for me- just scared Charlton.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Thought we played well on a proper gluepot of a pitch. Definitely seemed to adjust to it more than the opposition though. We came up against an international keeper who pulled off some fine saves and in any other game we could have been 2 or 3 up. I thought Chris Powell made good use of his subs this week as he tried to combat the aerial threat of Zigic, get on a fresh pair of legs up front and pace on the wing. I have complete faith in what Powelly is doing as he is coming up against a lot of managers that have much more managerial experience and have also had some money to bring players in during the transfer window. Can't fault any of our players performances, Stephens tackled and was everywhere, Jacko played out of his skin, Waggy was wiley, the back four were immense, Kermorgant and Fuller were superb and Hamer hardly had anything to worry him. Yes it was frustrating not to win but we are definitely punching above our weight so far.
It's a bit on the simplistic side (and doesn't factor in several things) but looking through our results this season, here are the points we've in the last 20 minutes of the game:
On an equally simplistic note...this would now give us 58 points and we'd be sitting just behind Cardiff. This, of course, is ridiculous. But it's interesting to see what a fine line we've trod this season between mid-table obscurity and competing for promotion.
By the way, this is in no way having a pop at the team.
For what it's worth I though we played very, very well yesterday and were very unlucky to come away with only a point. We totally bossed a very poor Birmingham side and there wasn't one Charlton man I would say had a poor game.
We are still learning at this level and maybe that's a factor in not being to hold on for 90+ minutes. The level of concentration and fitness needed for an entire game, and the need to take your chances in the Champ far exceeds League One, but I believe this will come in time. Keep the faith.
I think that there is a burden if responsibility in a number of areas, CP, The board, the players ... CP now has to work on our last 15 minute play both mentally and formation. All is not lost and we don't need to panic, although we do have a tough set of fixtures coming up. With regard to Hamer and the pitch I don't think anyone disagrees with what Hamer said but somethings should be kept in house and this is one of those things ... At the end of the day it is CP's job to address these issues not Hamer
Does anybody know how many goals we have scored in the last twenty mins to gain points! It may appear that we don't impose ourselves on other teams in the last period of the game at either end.

Just watched the highlights on my phone and its 4min6sec of Charlton missed chances. They showed one half chance for Brum and the goal which was sloppy defending on our part. Still gutted that we only drew. Ruined my weekend.

Man up, VMcM !
Put that box of tissues away & stop dwelling on yesterday's result & get that ticket booked for Hull !
Good performance but the strategy is all wrong for the final winding down of the game when we are winning. We sat too deep...we always sit too deep and with their extra forward there was an acre of spacee given to them before their goal. High points are Wagstaff /Kermogant/Jackson/Fuller ;we played the ball a bit more on the ground/ and greens substitution led to the goal. Points for improvement strategy for when we are winning and they put extra men up front.
dont know if this has been mentioned before but where was danny haynes?he played on monday in a friendly and expected him to be a sub against birmingham

"He played on Monday".......there is your answer. No mention of him at all so assume he is injured again.

I wonder if he is on a pay as you play deal
If he is he might have died of starvation which would explain his absence yesterday...

Would love to go to Hull but I'm taking Mrs McMoist to Bath for the weekend. (I hope she likes Rugby because I've got tickets for Bath v London Irish and I haven't told her yet)

Wondered whether SCP had thought better of benching him in those conditions...another hammy problem waiting to happen ?
Gutting but heartened by the fact that we dominated that game - love CP but if there is one crticism, he needs to take the handbrake off sometimes so that we bury teams when we are on top - i guess a goalscorer would help and they cost money so not really his fault but certainly the mentality seems to be that we we can defend out a 1 goal advantage rather than push on to kill the game off. 4 games in a row that has backfired now but it's a tough league and all in all, with a lack of investment, we're doing okay - wouldn't surprise me if we go and win the next two, seemingly tough away games.
Played well but again we didn't take enough of our chances. Fuller had one of those games that showed why Stoke fans loved him. Never sure about 4-4-2 with this side, but Birmingham were poor and it was the right decision. Relieved we finally scored what looked like the winner. Then team then seemed to panic and had we played a little longer we might have lost the game.
Three/four wins and a handful of draws and we'll be safe. If we can improve the squad in the summer I'm sure we'll also see Powell's tactics and substitutions suddenly improve as he'll have better and more options to change things. This league is so close that there's some truth in both the extreme positive and negative views.
As CP said himself, we are doing ok. A better midfielder or two and a goalscorer up front we'd be in the play-offs. A few injuries to key players with no replacements coming in on loan and we would struggle.
No reason why we can't get a decent result in the next few games. We've beaten the top 3 and have a very good away record. It'll be interesting to see if CP switches back to 4-5-1. I guess it depends on how the opposition play, it was ideal for playing a team like Brighton, but as said 4-4-2 was the right choice against Birmingham.
doing a Len and posting without reading thought that we played some decent stuff in spite of an awful pitch , first half Stephens was everywhere and really impressive , we ran in to a top keeper on his game today and fairplay to Butland Ricardo did some magic up top and prolly warranted a goal and waggy got involved more the game went on just a shame that we couldn't hold on again but that's the way it's going atm and with two tough away games to come i'm looking down rather than up personally i still think we'll end up with more points at home than away even tho we've played 1 more at home and have 4 points less at home ! 3 games ago we were 7 points from the last play off spot we're still that BUT we were 13 pts from a relegation spot and that is now 6 pts and that is something to worry about because this crazy league is not like others and no one is cut adrift at the bottom so all teams will think they have a decent chance of survival
0% top 6...... 30% 7th-12th ...........60% 13th-21st ....10% the dreaded drop
Depressing if you believe that relegation chances really are 10% and have increased that much (from zero?) after failing to win... Someone on another thread has posted a link to a site which gives us 2.5% chance of relegation - a lot better than the 20% given to Huddersfield and Wednesday. Maybe like busses, when the next win comes there will be three in a row?!

.... For 3 games we've failed to win and gained just 1 pt whilst 3rd bottom have closed the gap by 7 pts !! After Blackburn win I had us 0% .... After wednesday defeat 5% palace defeat 10% chance of relegation I think SCP will pull us through but it won't be easy because hard work and effort can only get you so far

Birmingham 1 – 1 Charlton = 2 points dropped
Charlton 1 – 2 Watford = 1 point dropped
Charlton 1 – 1 Huddersfield = 2 points dropped
Charlton 2 – 2 Brighton = 2 points dropped
Bolton 2 – 0 Charlton = 1 point dropped
Charlton 1 – 1 Derby = 2 points dropped
Charlton 1 – 2 Wendies = 3 points dropped
Palarse 2 – 1 Charlton = 3 points dropped
Charlton 1 – 1 Birmingham = 2 points dropped
Total = 18 points dropped

Butland was absolutely quality and birmingham will struggle to hold on to him.
Wilson was horrible yesterday he kept passing to people tightly marked as he looked scared to do anything.
Stephens and jackson looked very solid in centre midfield. Waggy had decent game.
Fuller looked top quality and kermo grew into game but needs to work on his link play with fuller but scored a bullet header.
We lost shape after we scored due to powells subs imo poor management.
Butland signed for Stoke in the January window, and has returned to Brum on loan for the rest of the season.
;o)

Agree completely with this assessment.
Not.....!

just a shame that we couldn't hold on again but that's the way it's going atm and with two tough away games to come i'm looking down rather than up
personally i still think we'll end up with more points at home than away even tho we've played 1 more at home and have 4 points less at home !
