Pritchards place in the team

I'm not fortunate enough to see Charlton every week, so looking for your guidance on this, but does Pritchard really warrant a place in the team?

I understand he works hard and I thank him for that, but he was given a lot of time to establish himself in the first team whereas players like Danny Green (inconsistent, but capable of real quality) were given a game then dropped if they didn't perform.

I'm very much pro Sir Chris and think the stick he gets on this site if appalling, but was interested as to what other people thought.

  • I still dont think he is good enough, never have
  • Green has had any number of chances to establish himself, including several long runs in the team. Pritchard has the highest workrate in the squad and I would say he is essential to enable Jackson and Stephens to do their thing. According to SCP he also has a real eye for goal in training but unfortunately we have rarely seen this in matches.
  • With the squad we have now, yes he does.

Yes. I think it has been said publicly that Jackson will not play wide left again. Now if that's the case and he plays in the middle in a 2 or 3, and he's in the team with Stephens, they need someone to do their running for them. There is no way Jacko and Stephens can play together in the middle without someone with energy in there. To my mind if Jacko and Stephens are both picked, Pritch has to be in also, otherwise you have to drop one of the other two.
  • Yes in a 4 5 1 formation.
  • He much better than Green for sure.

Hard work, boundless energy, harries and keeps the ball moving.

Doesn't score enough as CP has said himself and maybe Stephens and Dervite might work but don't underestimate just how much Pritchard brings to the side. It may not be flashy but he does it non-stop.
  • I think Pritchard is one of our best players. Every player has good and bad games and even if he is having a bad game he is still working his absolute bollox off. I think the goals are not too far of.
  • In the Fulham cup game last year Pritchard was arguably our best player. Against a full strength Premier League team he did not look at all out of place.
  • On reflection, given our squad, I understand the need for him to enable other players.

I do wish Dervite suddenly morphed into a Ledley King style defensive midfielder though, minus the injuries.

  • Works hard you can't deny that. However he misses far too many chances. His goal rate is dire even for a midfielder of his style. I think Stephens instead of Pritchard in the last line up could have worked.
  • How does it come about that posters are automatically compairing him to Green?

Two totally different players, who operate in different positions...
  • He deserves his place in the line-up because of his energy and fitness. He is not the most naturally gifted player though so when he gets tired (not that I have seen that yet!) I don't think he will have much to offer.
  • ask the other midfielders how much they appreciate what Pritchard does and you might have your answer.
  • Doesn't get enough plaudits for his technical ability in my opinion. Yes, his fitness and work rate is unbelievable but he does have a very decent touch and is very tidy in helping us to keep possession.
  • works hard, enthusiastic, tries but lacks the required quality
  • Our results and performances have improved since he has been back in the team. Do wish he could finish, though.
  • I think he can finish. He has a record if scoring from midfield on a smaller stage but it could be a lack of confidence.
  • Fantastic cross on him too. Got a good knack for getting it right on Yann's head
  • Pritchard is the player that knits the team together - and provides the platform for more creative players to perform.
We've seen the difference in the team when he's not playing.

Unlike players like Jackson who drifts into the box unmarked, Pritchard tends to arrive late with a lungbursting run from a deep position - at full stretch it can be difficult to keep balance and composure.

  • I like Pritchard, was willing that volley to go in near the end.

The reason we are holding our own in this league is because of the likes of him running his nuts off and not the likes of Danny Green disappearing for 90 minutes (to use the original posters comparison)

He might be lacking the quality of a top 6 championship player, but then again we arent a top 6 championship side although a few on here seem to expect that...
  • Definitely yes. I think he was superb first half Saturday. Was everywhere. He's vital to us with our current side / squad. He also has about 7 assists this season.

He may not be the most skilful player but I wouldn't say he's technically inept as some seem to be suggesting. His first touch is generally reliable and he puts some decent crosses in. What he lacks is the ability to rifle a shot in or produce 60 yard balls. But that's what Stephens is supposed to offer, and there are not many players at this level who really do have those skills in their locker.
  • Yes, people that want him dropped follow the ball when they watch the game- they don't look around the pitch. If they did, they might realise his worth to the team. He isn't the biggest though so does get pushed off the ball easier than some, and he needs to work on this aspect. I see him as a work in progress, but we need to play him to allow him to develop his weaker areas. Composure in front of goal is another.
  • I'm a big fan of BP, still maintain the view that he puts so much into his game that he is knackered after 70 minutes and needs subbing, we all know what's happened after 70 minutes for the last 2 matches.

he certainly looked dead at the end on Saturday. But as you say, thats because he ran himself into the ground for the first 70 mins in a massive local derby.
  • Shouldve done better with that volley on Sat having just watched the highlights.

But then you could also say that about clear cut chances missed by Jackson, Cort and Devite.

  • Thing is Jackson scores consistently so that miss is a one off. Pritchard misses most chances. Cort has scored more from centre half.

He did also nearly score in the first half to. Only was denied by a great save from Speroni, he has the ability to ghost into the box and get goals but for some reason we haven't seen it that much yet.

Also he thoroughly deserves his place in team IMHO, we'd be much worse without him in the side.

One of our best players this season and the impact he had when he came back in the side after a losing streak changed our fortunes.

I dont really understand how people cant see what he brings to the side.
